  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Kinefinity MAVO Edge

Its just a different way of exposing the image just like any other non-raw camera's ISO settings. It lets you decide rather you want to protect your highlights more at the expense of shadow detail/noise or if you want to keep more shadow detail/less noise in the darkest parts of the image at the expense of some potential highlight clipping. It's not tied to a raw codec.

I believe this what you might have read:

Yeah, I was reading somewhere that the ISO metadata was only stored in EI mode which allowed you to change the ISO in post using digital gain rather than analog; giving more flexibility but inducing more noise. Was just curious if that metadata would have only been stored in certain codecs like ProRes RAW or cDNG because if they removed it, the EI mode doesn't really make sense anymore if that's the case. You don't get control of the highlight sensitivity or anything while in EI mode, just the option to change your ISO in post.

It's just like Red. If you shoot Red Raw you can change the ISO in post. If you shoot Prores in-camera the ISO is baked in and can't be changed in post. It's still just an exposure method, changeable with a raw codec not changeable with ProRes 420,422 or 4444.

This ia a "MASTER CLASS FOR THE MAVO LF" unfortunately it's in French. The slides with the discussed info are in English and are shown off and on Full Screen. Of interest in this video is from about the 26:00 minute mark onwards where ETTL , ISO , Dual ISO MODE, EI MODE are discussed.

Better sources of info than myself can be found at the Kinefinity Cinema Camera facebook group, if they accept your membership, where a KINEFINITY EUROPE REP Posts and accepts questions, and JEROME GafPaGear who is very knowledgeable about all things Kinefinity.

Thanks, I'm going to check those resources out. You've been a big help. That's what I was wondering. Since they removed the raw codecs from the Mavo I was curious if there was even a point in using the EI mode. Hopefully, they will bring them back eventually.

Austin,

You're Welcome! But you would think they would lower the price until any Raw Codec was added back to the camera. You would be still be paying for an important missing feature, a Raw recording capability.

Surely the el mode will be useless. I wonder why they came up with this in the first place.

Kinefinity 's Chinese website shows that the Mavo Edge, atleast in their country, will be offered in two packages

1)The Core Edition-99,900 Yuan=$15,524.46

Kinefinity Mavo Edge | first impressions

By Gafpa Gear

Jerome GafpaGear-From Facebook Group

Mavo edge first EU footage

I have to study grading the Mavo edge a lot more, to show how truly amazing it is, but didn't wanted to keep this first footage I shot today for myself. I went a bit crazy with the greens, because the edge has such a fidelity if it comes to green, something other cameras are simply blind for, top that up with spring, and some rainy weather and you get crazy greens. Hope everyone gets a bit of an idea what is possible with this stunning camera. Really enjoy it, feels like I am learning grading for the first time, its soo rich, that you can be much more versatile! If you have any questions please don't hesitate! I already have a few answers, because i can guess what the questions will be

this was shot in 4k oversampled from 8k, the camera can do on sensor quantization (oversampling), which most cameras cannot do, this is called quad bayer, instead of interpolitating each cfa with the info from neighboring pixels, the 4 pixels (quad ) are just combined in one super pixel. basically the end of raw. smaller image (4 times smaller on your harddisk), lower noise value bigger color depth, hoera!
i shot this in 4444 prores at 50 fps and its being played back at 24fps

i didnt do noise reduction in post, if you zoom in 500% you can see some chroma noise, which you could take away for an even cleaner image, so that youtube etc, will even display it nicer, but wanted to do a quick turn around this time, and stay honest, and show you the image as it is

i used a cinema lens made for 70mm movie making, theres quite some corner falloff, will make also lots of tests with the new dulens (58mm) cooke s7 and a few other lenses, so dont worry

I Don't Know Exactly what Jerome GafpaGear was trying to show in these stills examples, maybe the dynamic range or HDR capabilities.

Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K Review – Hands-on & Short Documentary (Pre-Production)

He does a great job of bringing up the fact that since the camera no longer offers the ProRes Raw recording feature it should be priced less. And if it is offered later, charge an additional price for that add-on capability for those who still want it.

Kinefinity Mavo Edge | commercial look

From Jerome GafpaGear on Facebook Forum

My attempt is to release about 5 films in the short time I have the Mavo Edge, with each time a complete different look and feel.
In this case we shot in harsh sunlight with the extreme vivid spring colors, green has lots of yellow spikes, and it was fun to see how the edge held up, we could have grade this darker, or deeper, but my attempt is to show you the full range of the camera and thus don't crush any stuff. I am aware that most of you know me of my somewhat vintage look, and ofc I will come up with that later, but releasing a cine camera is a precious thing.. So first things first.
The lens was the amazing lomo OKC 14-75-1m mostly at T2.0- T2.8
This was shot in Open gate prores 444 8k. And downsampled in resolve to 4k . We will later release some 8k stills in log, so you can play on these as well! Let us know if you have any questions, and how you like this footage.

Kinefinity Mavo Edge Night Sample Stills 3200 to 5000 ISO

MAVO Edge | at night 3200-5000 iso

By Jerome GafpaGear

Dear Mavo LF,

Iam terribly sorry that this might kill your potential but I still love you, and your bigger pixels are still awesome for night shoots, however I just got home from a night walk and the edge has such a rich image and with the right lens you can turn your bigger brother in to a crazy good night shoot camera. I post some images i shot on your bigger brother and I wanted to let you know I still love you even though this might not feel like.

xxx Jerome
