  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Kinefinity MAVO Edge

Lot of disruptive things in there.

Price. 12k USD
Sensor size, resolution.
The double media slot. M2 SSD recording.
Dual recording possibilities with raw and proxies.
Dual backup recording possibilities raw on both mags simultaneously.
The double battery mount is not bad.
Their lens mount is nothing to complain about.
Dual ISO.
Electronic ND with clean and END mechanical swapping filter.
12V out
Dtap out.
Sync.
Eternet
TC
Wifi with low latency 1080p to smartphone... no screens needed here.
Weight 1.2kg

Its difficult to call them copy cats any more, as I see it they are really taking the lead in a lot of ways. Yes sure other cameras might do a lot of things better / look better etc. But on paper this is really no paperweight.

But if it would be RED that brings that paper, I'd bet a lot of people would say "shut up and take my money".

Very interesting. It ticks a lot of boxes. Let see some pictures now.

Likely better or on par with Mavo LF. Then also likely some color issues introduced with the Electronic ND, but thats of course something you can opt not to use if its bad.

Well for the specs pretty impressive.
We have been trying to convince RED to have these specifications in the camera for a few years or at least in part. Starting from the internal ND......ecc eccc...
Let's see RED what it will do with dmsc3, but I see it hard to fight with these prices

I'm on RED wagon if it has Monstro sensor, better fan, and those features. R3D still is the killer.

Prices are insane on that thing.
If DSMC3 will be far from that in price and features it will be hard for Red to keep up.

A lifecycle of 2 years between the original LF and the Edge is pretty hard for customers to be honest.
But with the price of 12000 quid in mind its a no brainer for most of people.

I love my Helium and we are still on top of the line with 8k 60fps. I will keep on using it until we see the 120fps in 8K on a large format.

I would take this over an FX9 any day of the week. How does it compare to a C500 Mark II is a legitimate question in my world.

I think the feature set including onboard downsampling to 6k, 4K and 2k, and variety of anamorphic modes makes it very compelling.

Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K - Official Product Launch 2020 [ENGLISH VERSION]

It's pixel binning to 6k as I understand, not downsampling. Or is the binning only for FF 6k Raw?

Don't see why this isn't a full readout and downsampling to target resolution. And the max fps for those modes, including the 2K are the same limits as the full 8K mode.

I've been reading it as full 8K capture, but stored at various smaller end resolutions.

This sounds cool but the one thing that makes me mad about RED cameras is that Kinefinity offers media enclosures so that users can use third party media if they want rather than stick with the Kinefinity media options. If they can do that for an 8K digital cinema camera then RED could have done that all along too. If the drives are good enough, RED should just make and sell enclosures and make a final firmware update before DSMC3 takes over to support third-party drives and not lock things in like the RED One. Heck, if they could do it, they should just make a new M.2 side module for the RED One too!

Other than that, I’m eager to see what else gets announced as the affordable 8K game is officially on!

Look at 3'14''

He says in the same sentence over sampling and pixel binning wich are exactly the contrary though... I think, downsapling RAW isn't possible either you read all the pixels or you skip them.

If the dynamic range and colour science on this thing holds up and reliability is good, then it'll be a beast. Adding some kind of autofocus would have made it game over for me.
