  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KINEFINITY KineMINI 4K & KineMAX 6K cameras

Even though the company lists as Europe, they are Chinese. I saw them last year at NAB but either missed it this year or they didn't show. Seemed interesting but very hard to get information through the language barrier. They were only talking 4K last year and had a prototype on display.

They told me the body of the 4K one was $3200 USD. Shoots several different RAW formats to 2.5" SSDs, with built-in WiFi control. I saw some footage they shot last week that was compressed to JPG, and I have to say I was impressed! It's very sharp and has a great feel to the image.

The body is solid and it uses an off the shelf Nikon bottom handle as the side handle, and the Nikon batteries to power it. Plus it comes in two colors...which is cool.

The big questions will be stability and support.

There's a shop here in Berlin offering the 4K KineMini body incl. EF or PL mount and transcoding software "Kinestation" at 2.799 EUR (preorder). A "professional bundle" consisting of body, SDI- and WIFI-option, battery handgrip, 64 GB SSD mag, cage, AC adapter and cables costs 5,199 EUR.

Great Google Moogle, the times we live in today! Ten years ago, you would have been locked up in a padded room if you were talking about tech like what we're seeing now at such low prices. I remember my first DSLR was a $1500 dollar purchase back when they were newfangled things and now you can get one for $400.

Let's clarify it. It is not a mere shop, it is the manufacturer rep in Europe and at same time, for worldwide sales, as far as I could understand.

6K comes late 2014 and under USD 10,000:

In any case, it looked like their offer had been priced in dollars for 4K as same as Blackmagic Production camera and in the end they are asking it in euros, not in US dollars. I even tried a quote for a 3D combo and with the options (let alone EUR600 for 4K, EUR300 for Wifi and about EUR300 for 3D without mention EUR600 for faster frame rates going with 2K, as for instance) in the end, the system would cost 4x the Blackmagic 2D 4K offer to begin with, so...

I think it's WAY sharper than Scarlet. Punching in 1:1 actually looks good. Does it have a higher-frame-rate crop modes? Also what lenses were these tests shot on?

As for low-light, it's really hard to tell... What was the base ISO? Did they shoot at ISO200 and it looked like night (but was actually dusk), what were the lenses at? Did they have a slower shutter? Hard to say without seeing it in person.

Is there anything out there from the 6K max?

They released some Cineform Raw from the KineMINI on their facebook page and I played with it for a bit.
Looks pretty amazing.

Would I toss my Scarlet-X kit for one?
... probably not.
Would I buy a Scarlet-X knowing this is around the corner?
... probably not.

That's what a Scarlet Dragon is for.

Seriously, I understand the enthusiasm and these cameras look nice.
The 2K shots look particularly clean which is something I think RED can improve on (A.D.D for 2K?)
They will definitely keep RED on their toes particularly in the mid range Scarlet price point.
The cinema DNG and Cineform Raw options are a step forward though I like truly like RED RAW and how far it's come.

We'll see how Kinifinity does with actually developing, delivering, and supporting the cams.
Good luck to them.

One thing that I am sure of though is RED has and continues to deliver, develop, and support it's cameras and I mostly like what they're doing.
For my uses, they surpass everyone else there.

I have been a user of Kinefinity cameras since January last year and can only say the best things about them. Of course there are several very good camera systems out there and RED is by far one of the best ones. But each system has not only it's strengths and weaknesses, as it will appeal subjectively more to some people than others. Depending on your kind of work, your aesthetic image preferences, your favorite workflow, or indeed what you value more in a camera... You will tend to prefer a certain line of gear. BMCC is also an excellent piece of gear and although I'd never exchange my Kine camera for a BMCC in terms of sensor or the way it processes images, I have to admit it may have some advantages in terms of maneuverability, flexibility or indeed overall bang for buck aspects.

I have two different types of work. Some more narrative oriented (short feature films, institutional, music clips) and some more point and shoot oriented (events, concerts, congresses or even weddings). For the way I like to work, my KineMINI camera is perfect for the narrative type of work. For the point and shoot or even for some types of documentary or sports... Forget it. I definitely prefer a Canon XF305 or the new Panasonic HC-X1000. To each his own but, the most important is to have a good understanding of the right tool for the right job and for the right person.

For what it's worth, here's the unboxing video... :001_tongue:
