  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KETCH ROSSi

Ketch, I know you've said it before.

What are you favorite MP focal lengths? Focal lengths, or focal diameters, what's the right word?

Thanks

Focal Length is the correct name Will, the Diameter refers to the total measurement of the lens, and it usually refers to the Front Diameter to specify what Bellow Ring adaptor is needed to fit on to the lens.

My favorite Focal go in the Telephoto range, as coming from many years of Portrait Photography this give the most pleasing images for Portrait, and also give a more pleasing Bokeh and render better faces giving a more flattering look, for this I choose from a 65mm to a 135mm, but also I love the RPP 300mm which we'll be using on a lot.

Now in 3D all changes as you need to stay WIDE, so to preserve roundness of your subjects giving a better 3Dimentionality to your images, so I try not to go over a 65mm.

Must share this one, lets see how you like it... I love it, and not just because of the lighting of Carly, but also because of the outside capture... ;)

PS: Not excuses, but this frame comp. was done in less then one minute on my laptop while having a Tiramisu at a local Bar... ;)

I wish to truly finish soon the Epic Frames Gallery soon, and you'll see only then the power of printing 6' images from this insane camera, HDRX and none, and I might have to change the location of the Opening, to the USA so I don't have to pay for so many tickets from the US to Italy... But there will be actually a little nice surprise announcement coming in this regard, which will involve Redusers form around the ENTIRE GLOBE... ;)

THE POWER OF HDRX... ;)

Peter Jackson and his dop Andrew Lesnie used ultraprimes on the lord of the rings trilogy, king kong and lovely bones. Presumably they chose ultraprimes for aesthetic reasons.

BTW, its funny that IMDB lists UP's while Arri credits MP's to being used on LOT during last year Engineering Achievement award given to ZEISS for building the Master Primes, which one is correct? ... ;)

Native ISO on EPIC is currently 800, and reported to be moving to 2000 with the new DRAGON sensor, but we'll know for sure on the DRAGON specs when it comes out.

You can shoot 320 ISO on EPIC, if this is dictated by either the need of the user's choice for a specific look, or for the desperate need to deal with strong ambient light, when not provided with ND filters and still needing a fast aperture to either get a SDOF or stronger BOKEH.

However any time you shoot either at a lower or higher ISO then the native 800 (with MX sensor) on EPIC, then you need to absolutely be sure that you EXPOSE properly and more carefully, so not to introduce added NOISE and or artifacts in to your RAW files.

Even so I have shot 320 ISO as well as 2000 ISO, I prefer to never go below 800 ISO and always use ND filters, this is why I have an entire set of Schneider's ND's.

If you are referring in the question if the EPIC is truly 800 ISO native but some people thing that they have measured to be actually 320 ISO then is a different story, and I don't follow their theory, and shoot observing the perimeters that RED has given us, and I'm getting exceptional results, even were most say that they are not, especially so in skin tones.

What ever ISO you choose the key is always one... EXPOSURE... ;)

A recycled shot from the EPIC M8 during our Houston shoot in favor of our new series of Shorts which will assist running our Campaign against Women's Abuse main subject of my first Movie.

The original image captured from a RED EPIC shoot using a Master Prime 75mm and a Master Diopter+2 with tone of light and a perfect Exposure on the yes.

Ketch,

This is a very cool rosette piece coming off the front of your top handle and attaching the 9" LCD. What is it called and where do you get it? It looks like the LCD is attached by a couple of quarter twenties, not just one like a Noga arm?

The RPP 300mm is truly a great lens, and makes for a nice set up with the new 9" and the Bright Tangerine Strummer, one of the best MB's I ever used, more on it some time later... ;)

Hey more compact set up and much of my favorite way of shooting EPIC solo.

That is a Rosette Block Will, here is the link: http://www.red.com/store/products/rosette-blockn

Reason I do it this way, is because the LCD remains in a more direct line of view to the Cinematographer, while giving 360º full unobstructed rotation when needed, and as the camera gets a bit heavier with different set ups the mounting of the large 9" directly on the handle eliminates some of the weight from stressing the Swat Rail mount.

It's awesome, very useful, thanks for posting the picture and info.

When I rig my camera I also put the lcd on the front of the rosset of the top handle because I like the view I am able to get while its there... its the highest thing on my camera and nothing will ever block it...

I didn't know there was such an easy part for it though. I have been just screwing it directly on which has led to a few scratches on the bottom of my lcd mount... just cosmetic and its on the bottom so it doesn't bother me, but I think this will also aid in speed of putting together my rig so I think I'll be picking one up... thanks for the info Ketch!

My pleasure Louis,

one of the reasons why I buy and sale so much gear is exactly because I always am trying to find the very best solution to mount and use the gear, ever evolving in new ways to mount all accessories in any given configuration, and since the RED EPIC does allow this like no other camera system ever before, the fun has become greater in finding new solutions, and any time I do it is always a pleasure to share them with fellow Filmmakers hoping that I'll make some one else's life on their Shoots a little easier... ;)

Where are you at with a shoulder mount solution?

Where are you at with a shoulder mount solution?

Have tested various units and have few more to test, so far none have the edge and absolute best mark form me.

PS: We will have in time our own State of the Art CNC and most talented Machinists which will be building Gear to my specifications, all Leather parts will be hand assembled by some of the same people that worked or work at FERRARI.

Oh and also coming will be a new specialty LAB which will be also bringing to life the Absolute ultimate Cinema Glass... Think Mini Master Primes married to Leica Cine Primes, T*1.2 of unmatched Resolution/Sharpeness charts to blow anything available to date out of their charts... ;)

What is my firm desire is to do to the Cinema Accessories and Cinema Glass what RED has done to the world of Digital Cinema with EPIC... ;)

You know I like the sound of that... and a starting price that of RPPs?

Way too early in the designing process to be able to say what the price point could be.

But this will be the Absolutely best glass in the world under all aspects, or it will never see the lights of day... ;)

However if I was to speculate, I would have to say according to current price list of components, that price would definitely not be any were near the RPP's price range, not at this level of quality and design specifics, which again, will be superior to that of the Master Primes and Leica Cine Glass combined, specifically design for Super High Resolution Digital Sensors, and when time comes that we have our data, we'll try to work with RED so to include a i/LDS type of communication with RED's cameras on the PL mount, so price will be more likely any were in the 10k to 20k range per lens.

At 10k a lens I'll be your first customer. Give me a standard rental set of 5.
