So love this Frame Grab, and can't wait for our final Site to have a dedicated Server for Large and Very High Quality image upload (not for the weak and slow connections) were RED EPIC Frame Grabs will be shown in a nicer and more enjoyable manner... ;)

This is my POST NUMBER *8 8 8 8*

Since I have a special relationship with the Number *8* I tough I would dedicate this Post to this number and what it means to me... ;)

Number *8* also the symbol for *I N F I N I T Y* means a lot to me, not only it is My Birth day as I came to be on *June 8* but was also almost my Death Day, as I was born with two rounds of Umbilical cord round my neck which had suffocated me, but I was saved, so this day was particularly special on it self as it came to be almost tragic and I almost came NOT TO BE.

In the years to come, this Number had accompany me in great Things, and Very Bad things, which end up as Great things any ways, but the most important one came to be when thanks to my alliance with my good friend Steve Gibby, and Jim and Jarred's approval, we received the RED EPIC #0000*8* AKA *M8* since then my life, which unfortunately had taken a critical turn, give me new opportunities and since that Day I have yet to stop traveling the World, Meeting new People, and creating Stunning Images with *M8* which is about to take me to an other great adventure in the making of my first True Short Film as an extract of my first Feature Film "RAPE of a BEAUTY".

To many people, numbers are just numbers, and a Camera is just a camera, but to me, this proved to be not so, were NUmber *8* even so my favorite number is *3* proved to be an intense number that had brought always something to spark up life.

So this is something personal, simple yet important to me that I wanted to share with you guys in the event of my Post Number *8 8 8 8*... ;)

He he, well, I basically would need an AVATAR... ;)

That should say all about my conditions, which renders my current body... EXPIRED... ;)

But we are GREAT WARRIORS and FIERCE FIGHTERS so that our lives will continue on, no matter what... Stupid or Silly as it might sound the RED EPIC played an important role on giving my Life a PUSH out of the DOOR so that I started to see the world again, instead of locking my self in house 24/7, almost having given up my future in Filmmaking amongst other Bigger Dreams.

What is to come now, has no precedents and has no way of truly being described, so I would not, especially having seen what happened when I tried to in other Threads, so be patient and I hope I will give you and every one else great Surprises to be Inspired and Proud from and by my actions and achievements... ;)

Ketch, doing a little research on Ultra Primes. Your thoughts? The Hobbit is using UPs, wonder why not MPs? Certainly not budget.

Don't look on what others are using, as theirchoice might be motivated by more tyhen what they were looking to get as far as the look, as for PJ's The Hobbit, the strongest point for going UP's vs. MP's was the 3D rigs, as the TS-5 3D rig from 3Ality is much more manageable with UP's, lighter and much smaller lenses, in fact while the Atom has a larger MB accessory that is specifically made to use MP's I'm not sure if that is the case with the TS-5.

But I would go MP's over UP's any time and day when I can, as they are much Sharper and Artifacts free, most importantly they Have no breathing and are technically as close to Perfection as you can get a lens to be, if I want my image to be softer I can always do that in post to match them to the UP's which are sharp but surely not as sharp as the MP's.

Also an other factor is that Movies like The Hobbits, need an extreme large quantity of Lens sets, not that I think was the issue here, but is is harder to find 48 Sets of MP's then it is to find 48 sets of UP's, then there is no reason to go MP's however I am not speculating why PJ chose the UP's vs. the MP's for the Hobbits, but this are few reasons I can think of.

To add, what I can promise you is that, if they didn't chose MP's it was not because they wanted a SOFT look, nor because they didn't need ot shoot as Fast, as th eMP's would always offer a superior quality image vs. the UP's, despite of ISO settings and or at which speed this lenses were to be used.

Thanks Ketch.

So the UPs breath a little when rack focusing?

Thanks Ketch.

So the UPs breath a little when rack focusing?

Every lens does, I don't care what Manufacturers say, of this the one that literally has almost no breathing are the MP's, and now will need to test the Leica's.

However absolutely don't concern yourself, as the breathing in the UP is also very well contained, after all this are Cine Primes not Still primes, and amongst the best out there, just not in the same leaf as the MP's, but great lenses nonetheless.

Peter Jackson and his dop Andrew Lesnie used ultraprimes on the lord of the rings trilogy, king kong and lovely bones. Presumably they chose ultraprimes for aesthetic reasons.

Yes aesthetic of a particular lens can also be a determining factor of why they are chosen, but it becomes one of the last factors when dealing with mega productions which have an incredibly talented POST crew and State of the Art facilities as Park Road that PJ had built in Wellington.

Even so some times DP's do get to like a particular Bokeh vs. that created by an other lens, depending on how the Iris Blades are cut to create either an almost perfectly round out of focus blur areas on lights, like the MP's do, or not, some prefer the warm look of the Coke some like me don't, as I prefer the Sterile Clean and super sharp look of the MP's, but in today's POST capacity, all but the actual look of the Blur created by the design of the actual blades closing, can be managed well after capture.

But again, I suspect, that one of the main and predominant reasons of choosing UP's on The Hobbits was because of their size and weight in relation to the factor of been used on 3D rigs, as well as availability in such a large quantities.

There is always many reasons why one could chose a piece of Gear vs. the other, we surely can't pretend to know this reasons for each and every project shot out there, but we can speculate giving our opinions based on our knowledge of the products being used, as we are doing here... ;)

Ketch, you are pretty good at this:

Is there a way to see threads that people have quoted you or replied to your posts? I'm posting all over this forum and "view posts" under my user is the best way I have to keep track. Even so, I miss some questions that are not answered right away.
