  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KETCH ROSSi

Mark

They are very close but for many centuries they were different countries. It's amazing how that stuff carries over.

Im so happy that ketch has found the perfect spot in Rome and that ketch is finally in pre production on his film. Wish it could have been Florence, but hey Rome is Rome.

David

Thans David, also the fact that all major Studios and facilities re in Rome will sure bring the needed support for this important Film,
and http://www.cartocci.com/ were on board since I first arrived in Italy, now few more have come on board and Rome is looking better then ever,
but we might no longer do it 3D but choose to shoot Anamorphic on the HAWK glass, we'll see... ;)

But I'l reserve final decision on this till I get back from Wellington, I'm sure the guys at Park Road, and hopefully PJ will have something to say about it... ;)

What happened to the commitment to 3D? I'd still like to see some of the stuff you've shot in 3D... ;)

Don't worry about my commitment to 3D, you will see soon how committed I really am... ;)

However, I also still believe that the artist choice based on the actual results for each project needs serious consideration and this is the case for this film.
we'll proceed with the screen tests with the Hawks in Rome and we'll see.

But again, 3D is not all out, just yet, we'll see final decision made once I return from New Zealand... ;)

and beside 3D, what happened to Hollywood: two years ago it seemed all set to have the film shot there, isn't Rome a bit of a setback?
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread...-a-Beauty-quot-brings-Ketchframe-to-Hollywood

The come back to Italy was long overdo, and a bit forced by health issues and a bit driven by my last decision on were I want to take my carrier and my films,
so after having done a bit more of Hollywood final decision was made to return to Italy.

Hollywood has his ways, and I have mines, for now they don't seem to go hand in hand... ;)

But no, moving to Rome will not be a set back vs. if I had move back to Hollywood again, remember that I was there for 22 years... ;)

In fact I have been working non stop on 3D project and non since I have been back, and now discussing 4 different movies, in different parts of the Globe,
plus the film in pre-production, which again, as soon as I return form New Zealand I'll know exactly if it is going to be in 3D or on not,
possibly Anamorphic as I am becoming more and more pleased with the look of the HAWK Glass.

Stay tuned, and I'm sure you'll all like what you will see... ;)

Ketch, I love the openness and the exuberance with which you approach your work. I love that after years of thinking about 3D you could find anamorphic is the better look and just go in that direction. (or not, perhaps) Im sure that the passion will show up on the screen whatever direction you decide to go.

was a couple of times on adds sets in Italy and English is not much spoken by Italians. Thanks God I'm second generation (my family came from Basilicata to England) so I could comunicate. On set english is okkaish for crew communication. Production personell, especially if they are older are terrible. At least this was my experience. I've noticed this funny thing with italians speaking with a foreigners, if they don't know english they'll just stick to italian but they speak it just L O U D E R and slowly, pretending that everyone will understand. LOL

Anyway, yes Ketch your determination is really admirable and sets the bar for everyone. I'm sure your business venture in Italy will go well as, the last I checked, no one really knew really what is 3D.

Thanks David!!

Yes, I am likely one of the most 3D passionate speakers out there, possibly second to only James Cameron, but now even Peter Jackson is very animate about 3D... ;)

However, it is important to see that it is the story that is always the most important and such must be seriously considered before any decisions are final,
in the case of he film which has been 3D since its conception, and also tough out and Script Depth budgeted for 3D, but after seen the texture
and look of the HAWK Anamorphic glass I had a doubt, so this doubt now must be tested and final decision on going 3D or not be considered.

That looks very beautiful where you live now. I'm curious how much english vs. Italian is spoken on sets and during pre-production meetings in Rome?

Yes Jason,

Rome is just so Mesmerizingly beautiful, it is the Ancient Capital, City of Emperors, and it shoes at every corner, and look forward to show it off on my future films here... ;)

I was actually surprised myself to see how many do in fact speak English, and of this I was pleased,
especially because only ONE of our films per year will be in Italian, and the rest in English, so this is good... ;)

He he, true on the loud/slow talking for those that don't speak English, so funny indeed, but the young do speak the language and it is a relief,
but yes outside of a set fewer do speak English.

Thanks for the kind words Bob, inspiring others thru my actions has always been my strong point in life, I just hope to do half of what I set out to do... ;)

And yes 3D in Italy, well, Europe really, is still a bit of a Taboo, but I'll change that soon... ;)

"We might no longer do "RAPE of a BEAUTY" in 3D but choose to shoot Anamorphic on the HAWK glass".

Now your talking some sense...

After watching Hugo, I've officially decided to not go to another 3d Film until the glasses thing has gone.... I cannot stand getting a headache for 2 hours and watching refections of cinema behind me bouncing around my glasses.
Even my kids have decided to not worry about 3d anymore.

Hey Ketch, one good thing coming out of this decision is you have saved yourself a shit load of post and production money, put that spare change into bigger scenes and bigger actors.
Leave the 3d for the gimmick kings... (studios)

Looking forward to seeing the finished film.

Good luck with it all...

+1.

Last film I saw in 3D was Tintin and I can't stand it anymore. And that's the last one I will ever see untill there will be another 3D technology without glasses - I mean a very good one without glasses.

The hole 3D thing is so overrated...

Ketch, do yourself a favor and shoot 5K Ana in 2D - you will not regret it. :-)

Hmm, I think in terms of distribution going 3D will bring broader revenue and bigger exposure. There are less 3D films out there than 2D. Cinema multiplexes try to fill in their 3D projections with as much content as they can get... While I do have a problem with 3D as an audience member- yes to headaches and sometimes losing concentration on what's going on- over here its a big money grabber and its perceived as value by local audiences. An indie film in 3D is a novelty. Artistically speaking it might not be the best option, but financially and in terms of exposure...I don't know...

Me and 3D. Not a big fan....don't even hear much about it in Italy.

What happened to PERSEVERANCE? Are you shooting that this year too?

You are lucky to have partnered with the Cartocci in Rome. Barely a feature was shot digitally in Italy last year. So are they insisting on FILM like almost every Italian film.

David

While it's true that the vast majority of tv series and features here are still shot on film (both 16mm and 35mm), there were at least 8 or 9 features which were shot digitally last year (Red and Alexa).
You're totally right about 3D though: no one here is seriously interested (and personally, I see that as a good thing, but that's just me and my taste).

(btw, great pics, David!)

Your have point, but the math just isn't there..

Post production on a 3d film, (and I know this for fact) - is close to 300% more...
Shooting time,Camera setups, extra grip support, longer shooting days, over time, extra gear rental, extra data... etc etc etc...
The list is long.
There is no such thing as an easy 3d shot. You cannot just climb out of a cab in the middle of the city and just shoot a shot. Thats just gone...

So with all the extra expense, you need a return for it...

So you say, because its 3d you may get a bigger return because cinemas need content... Thats probably true, I'm not going to argue that.
But if the film cost you another 10 million to create... (at least) Because its 3d...
That means you need to earn at least 30 million though the gates... 50-60% to the cinema owner, 25 - 30% to studio or sales agent an the 5 producers that helped you get there... 20% + P&A.... leaves you a whopping great 0%... which will get lost in creative accounting, courtesy of the sales agent and Studio accountants..
And if by any chance you see some money, you get taxed on it.... leaving you more broke than when you started..
(but at least therapy is taxable) :)))

So really... 3d.. is it really worth it for the individual maker, or is it worth it for the studio and cinema owner...

Just trying to put a bit of perspective on it all...
I went to a film festival last year and the capped the entries to 2000 feature films.. they sold 3.
Making a film is a very big deal...

Hang on, I'm getting off track here...
3d... yes.. No...

3d for big films yes... because most of them are studio tax write offs... unloading profits from bigger films, this is common....
3d for Indies.... I think your Mad.

The secret of film making for the future (MHO), is creating something big for peanuts... Keep it out of the cinemas, and go straight to DVD, BLUE-RAY and HD ONLINE sales, TV sales, etc etc.. that you control...
Far less effort to recoup, far better chance to profit from your efforts.

If I siad to you, that every time I sold your film for you, you make 75% of the sale... no strings attached.. what would you say.

Mark, you're absolutely right. Its obviously much, much more expensive to produce 3D film. However, I think that there are not many 3D films produced in Europe (maybe 1 or 2 french or uk films?). This type of content practically doesn't exist. Producing a 3D film might be a good venture for someone trying to shoot a feature over there. Of course, this is in a pure commercial perspective. In an artistic, indie perspective, I agree having all the restrictions of shooting 3D, like double or triple the amount of money, the mise-en-scene than needs to be extremely well developed (due to the deep depth of field and different layers of set construction) the handicap of having to use lots of heavy, expensive and SLOW equipment, for a person like me, that would indeed be madness, but for someone like Ketch who owns most of the 3D gear and has vast experience on 3D and probably contacts and investors, I don't know, he might very well pull it off... Then again, 3D is perceived by audiences as an "experience", not as part of the artistic language of filmmaking. There's some potential here to create something truly unique in terms of 3D. I honestly don't think this potential has been touched yet.

This however, contradicts a bit my view about 3D :) I have yet to see a 3D film that makes me go WOW, this is it, this is 3D filmmaking, this is a 3D Film as in a whole artistic piece.

Thanks Mark,

however, not final decision has been made as of yet, I have been leaning out of 3D and started experimenting Anamorphic,
and precisely with the HAWK glass, to try and enrich the texture of the film, both in its FilmNoir type of scenes as well as in its super contrasty colorful scenes,
but again 3D is not out yet, before this final decision in favor or against 3D is made, I'm going to New Zealand to discuss things with the boys at Park Road,
and pay a visit at the Hobbit's set while there, if PJ allows me of course... ;)

but I promise you that if I do decide to go 3D, I'll not give you headaches, and that will be 3D, if it is, so to give more to the depth of the story,
the characters and the over all filling, yet for now, its 50/50 3D vs. Anamorphic.

We'll be doing some tests in Rome, and then in NY with Daniel of Big Apple films on my way to Brazil, as Daniel has a full set
of the HAWK V-Plus series, we'll be sure to post some frame grabs, and possibly even a super short clip, either way this will not be part of the movie,
but Models chosen to see the texture on the Skin tones.

Hi David,

at the end, after going back and fourth so many times with making "PERSEVERANCE" first, I had to decide against it
been first, as I have too many locations for this film, and need to have a very complex make up and brake up of the life line, which
I'm taking more time and looking for a bigger budget to do it, so for now final decision has been made to start with this film instead,
however, chances are that I might now be making other two movies first, of which one will be mine, but produced with and for an other company,
and a second one also for an other company, this not mine, but were I'll play important key role in the making of, one of them in 3D the other in 2D,
so very well could now happen that I'll find myself out of Italy again for several months, before been able ot get back to the making of this film.
good news is, I'll have lot more money and gear for it by then... ;)

As far as Film vs. Digital in Italy, I'm not concerned as fortunately I am the one dictating the rules of the game no matter what I do, and I'll be shooting EPIC... ;)

Also to note, that only "ONE MOVIE" per each year will be made in Italian language for Italian distribution, al others will be in English for International distribution.
