  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KETCH ROSSi Cine Style Shooting Epic M8

Ketch, have you heard anything about a top handle for Epic? I think a really light-weight one would be ideal. The one you had on your Epic is just a Red One part, right?

Tom,

as pointed out the Top handle that we used on our configuration for the Salton Sea and Joshua Tree shoots was the Red Top
Handle from the Red Basic Production Pack, very nice one for Epic as well, but now with the NEW Redesigned and Biffier,
Better Grip Better Rubberized and Better Structure on the entire surface, with a Nato Sliding component super easy and super
fast to put on and or remove, with Several mounting positions on all sides of the now Square out body, you can mount just
about anything on it, oh did I forgot to say that this is all NATO Railing and that you can get a Ton of goodies on many Stores
to rig it up in any possible crazy configuration?

Stupid question: Can you mount the touchscreen LCD on the dog bone?

Yes you can mount the LCD EVF and anything you can thing do just about in any and every position possible on the entire Clutch,
its insane the amount of freedom this gives you, Love this RIG!!

Ketch...I know you are super busy...Was interested in the weight on the epic with the red zoom, card reader, and battery (no handle or matte box). Trying to spec a RC helicopter design that will carry the epic in a "skinny" version for aerial filming...?

If you get a chance, would be interested in "field" weight.

We have not yet received our Batteries for the Side Handle Grip, but with the Grip and the RPZ 17-50 the rig is at about 9LB.

Would love to collaborate something with you, just not sure how willing Steve and I would be to put our Baby on an RC Copter;)

PS... is anyone else having trouble seeing Ketch's photos of the shoulder rig? They won't load on either of my computers.

Sorry Tom,

still having issues with the new Server, even so we now got Amazon S3 Pictures still go strait thru the Server, but Detlev is
here now and we are rebuilding the entire structure of our site form Scratch and getting a new Bigger Private Server ;)

Btw, Steve will be here this afternoon, you should try and get here so we can team up to go shooting this Sunset or Tomorrow, or

Hmm...looks like you guys have been having tons of fun with Epic M8 this week. I think I'll drive on down to California tomorrow for a few days and get re-acquainted with the camera :-)

He he, yeah Steve, the fun has never stopped since that very first day we unboxed our baby at your Utah's Ranch, look forward in shooting together again ;)

Ketch, for your Salton Sea shoot, why were you using a slider?

Jarred, I don't see anything that we really need like a start button on the handle or a way to mount a FIZ control that is comfortable for the gunner to use.

Ketch, for your Salton Sea shoot, why were you using a slider?

We did not use a Slider @ Salton Sea ;)

Thanks for the close up on the new handle.

Is it any lighter than the first? And does the rear end unscrew?

The Original RED Top Handle is 6.9oz.

The New RED Top Handle is 9.5oz.

However you must consider the larger size, and the Front added Rosette, as well as the bottom portion of it with
mounting options and slider hook, its pretty light weigh it self ;)

Unless I am mistaken, M owners don't have modules yet. But I do remember seeing this shoulder piece before, and the angle was such that it would go from the base of the Brain to the base of the rear-most modules. The brain is taller than the modules, and the modules are flush with the topside of the Brain, but not the bottom of it.

Can modules be placed on the back of the camera in this configuration?

Yes the Modules will off course work like a charm in this ring in any configuration,
however the Clutch, has much evolved since that Render posted by Jarred, see the main differences
form that to the actual Clutch ;)

... and does that allow the ET baseplate to be used with this hand-held system?

I think the jury is still out on that, but here are some things I know...

The Red DSMC universal mount is compatible with the ET hybrid core. By that, I mean I've taken two Red 19mm DSMC universal mounts and attached them to my ET hybrid core. They mate together perfectly. But note that the Red part has more features than the equivalent ET part (what ET calls the Hybrid studio clamp). It's got tapped holes that run vertically through the mount. Looks like parts of the clutch use those holes, like for instance to attach the handles.

So if you have an ET hybrid, I think there's a chance that you can still use your ET core, and replace just one of the ET studio clamps with Red's DSMC universal mount.

But please don't go buying stuff on my say-so, I haven't played with the clutch enough to speak with authority. Also, from everything I see it appears that Red's new baseplate core (not sure what they call it) includes a quick release feature. Not sure if the rest of the hand held system is premised on that feature, but seems unlikely that it would be.

All I know for absolutely sure is that I was able to attach Red's new 19mm DSMC universal mounts to my ET hybrid core in lieu of using ETs 19mm studio clamps. And that the Red clamps have tapped holes running vertically.

Thanks John.

I really appreciate the answer. :thumbup1:

John is correct, however, I would not ideally mix any of the Red Base Plates with those of ET,
the new RED design is smaller and lighter, and I would use one or the other.

ET has done a Fantastic job with the accessories for Red One, and I'm sure will continue to amaze us with the accessories
for Epic/Scarlett, however current RED designs are just simply better in every way, and we chose to use Red's ;)

However, as John said there is compatibility here and the user can decide what is better depending on each individual Job's needs for mounting options, as an
example, I Like the Epic Riser from Red, better than that form ET's, but that of ET's is better for mounting it on various other surfaces or mounting plates
when a Bridge plate is not used, as it has four additional Holes for Allen bolts, so each has its use ;)

Ketch, if that is not a slider at Salton Sea, what is that set up with two tripods, two bars and a head? Regardless of what you call it, I'm curious as to why you were using it as opposed to a single tripod.

He he, Tim, that Slider is what we used at Joshua Tree, not at Sea, and this is a great way to Dolly in to and out of a point in
your scene to create an artistic look to it, and Tom sure does this extremely well, and I too will shoot static as little as possible.

Hey Ketch, is there anyway you could upload the original TIFF files for us to look at? The compression on these is pretty heavy! Looks good though!
