  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ketch + Epic + Canon Mount

...Sounds awesome! Might be tricky though. My wife and I are pregnant and "due" mid November.
Tough time to leave with all the "nest building" going on here!

If I can find a way....(Time/money/"permission" !)

Stay put and enjoy this time inyour life. Bring the whole family next year. :)

Here is a list of Canon lenses that have been programed into the mount/ Epic Brain. [snip]

Canon EF 16-35/2.8L II USM
[snip]

We have a 16-35/1:2,8L USM (not the II). Will that work out of the box as well or do you need to wait till you got your hands on one of those?

Also, the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm 2.8 DX for Canon is a killer lens. Any chance to get that working easily?

Thanks!
Mike

All you have to do is ask Ketch, and we'll be happy to help you get the word, and some videos out to the hungry community.

My offer to help stands. Whatever you need buddy!

David.

Its more complicated then that David, I can for one not just bring any one on set do to NDA, of course you are not just any one, but just the same, rules are rules, and I go by them very carefully,
second, the Videographer needs to bring his/hers own filming equipment, if both are applicable then I can consider it, but no posting and or videos or photos can be published prior my approval,
so a tight lead needs to be kept on things, as we know too well what happens when something gets published the wrong way, I just got the mount and need to test lots of things and I can make
more then one mistake, usually I do, and that can not reflect the way the mount and the Epic behaves, this type of info needs to be controlled, as to insure that only the right info gets out at the right time.

I have in fact 9 people that wish to tag along and film videos and shoot pics, all in do time.

However if you can play by this rules and have the gear, I of course would love to have you, but you also need a vehicle to get to the locations, as I can not come pick you up and take you back,
now, when we shoot in Florence then will be easier for you to get to us, or for me to swing closer to were you are and pick you up.

Hey Ketch,

We're here when you need us and we can sign and NDA, we have gear (lots of it) a car, and are ready to go when you need us.

Keep me posted.

Thanks Ketch. I know you will put that mount through it's paces.

Wow...this whole time I've been beating myself up over trying to figure out if I should go for the Nikon mount and ZF.2 or spring for Compact Prime...maybe Canon mount and L glass is the way to go?

Don't have much experience with Canon lenses, how do the current L lenses compare to something like the Zeiss ZF.2s?

On a side note, from what I am seeing, the L lenses all have the red stripe on the barrel no?

That's massively cool, but how about old-school focus pulling via some kind of wheel-like wireless remote? Any plans?

That's exactly what the REDMOTE PRO is for! Still in development.

Wireless focus will come with the normal REDMOTE, you just need to use the little scroll wheel, vs. the proper sized focus knob of the REDMOTE PRO.

That's awesome news! Will there be speed adjustments like slow, medium (medium would mean 360 = full lens travel) and fast? and "go to focus distance X" buttons? is there a way to make pen marks on the Redmote pro?

It's fantastic to have so much flexibility with so much Canon L lenses.

...but i can't figure how someone will be able to do a smooth follow focus.

Do you think it will work ?

...or Will the Ls work properly with manual follow focus ?

Antoine

I have tried another system, and they work like a dream - potnetially any speed you want (like 2 disc rotations = 1 lens travel, 1/2 disc rotation = 1 lens travel, etc.)

Great to hear David,

then as soon as I have things figure out, if this intense Canon test will actually happen here in Italy or in some other corner of the world, I'll contact you... ;)

Hey Ketch, how would you say Canon L Primes stand up again the Zeiss ZF/ZE line? I'm worried about the electronic focus.

Was pretty set on going Nikon/Zeiss ZF.2 for my personal lens set, but you've got me considering Canon L now. Will only have $10k to spend on glass for my Epic so I figure on going still lenses and renting PL when needed. Not much experience with Canon glass though. Currently on Nikons w/AF-100.

Thanks!

Did some searching and 10K will get me a heck of a lot of nice Canon L! Enough for a prime set and a mid-range zoom.

Jarek,

my very first still camera was a Canon, then I moved to Nikon for pro work, then Nikon really felt behind and I moved to Canon and never looked back,
there are some lenses that NIkon makes better then Canon and vice versa, but overall are all great glass, its a matter of what you like best, also Zeiss now makes glass in EOS mount,
so if need to you can go that route, but I would stay with L glass form Canon, so that you have the best of al worlds, IS, AF and Manual, all at your choosing.

What I can say is that Canon "L" glass stands its own against any glass, at the end its matter of choose, but especially at the price range, there is no way for you to build yourself a better glass set for EPIC.

I, if it turns out, will be also getting the S2 Leica glass for Epic, as I consider that STill glass the absolute TOP of the line, as I con sider Master Primes at the top of the Cine glass line,
of course if RED does in deed make a EPIC Leica S2 mount, then this set will run you more then a set of RPP's ... ;)

Thanks Ketch, your input is a great help. The set I've picked out for now is...

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L
Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II
Canon EF 135mm f/2 L

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L

This will run me just under $10K

Might go for the 70-200mm down the road.

That is a great start Jarek,

however since you have the EF 35mm f/1.4L which is a fantastic and super sharp lens , and in fact Canon has not cared to make a version II as of yet as it is such an insane lens,
I would suggest to go for the TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II which is sharper then the EF 24mm f/1.4L II, and also will give you some super fun perspective possibilities, but this is a MANUAL ONLY lens.

The 24-70 has been talked of a newer II version yet no signs of it, it too is a fantastic zoom, well known for its particular look.
Of course the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II is a zoom that you should absolutely get, as you will discover it offers some pretty fantastic looking images, especially at the long end,
when shooting at the closest focus with a long distance in the BG of your intended subject, its separation and its blurring effect on the BG is just so sweet, I love it, and after the EF 85mm f/1.2L II
it is my favorite glass for Portraiture work, and or extreme close ups with a Canon 500D Close Up lens on it.

The new 24-70 should arrive very soon. Canon will reveal the lens at IFA event in Berlin. If Canonrumors.com is correct :-)

Hmm...I'll have to look into that one. Not concerned about all manual, it's what I am used to anyway. Seems a little on the slow side, I've always tried to keep my lenses 2.8 or above. But as a lens that would probably make most of its use outdoors it should be ok. Like you said, I've covered with the 35mm if need be. Also with the 24-70mm.

Thanks!

Now back to the mount...

I know there's programmable rack focusing between selected points, similar to how the Birger Mount operates. Is there any type of focus tracking capability? Like Set it to someone's face and it keeps it in focus? Obviously it wouldn't work for fast action, but for slow push ins something like that would be a Godsend! I don't always work with an AC.

Since there are so many posts in this thread, once more to guarantee the request is not hidden under the noise, is it possible to get the Canon EF 800mm/f5.6L IS USM AF to the list of Epic supported lenses? Please .... :-)

that one is about 2 weeks away from being programmed :)
