I've been having these kernel panics on startup and I'm having an issue sorting out whats causing it.

When I pulled all my cards out except a gt120, which runs fine.

Has anyone have issues with any of these cards?

CalDigit FASTA-6GU3
Red Rocket
Cyclone PCIe2-426

I'm trying to shuffle cards around and can't seem to find an individual or combination that is causing the issue.

thanks
matt

Two questions:

1) What are your system specs? Specifically: OS Version, Hackintosh vs. Mac Pro
2) Can you post a shot of the KP?

I have a Caldigit FASTA card in my Hackintosh (Gigabyte EX-58 Extreme mobo) and it caused issues with my Davinci and Pro Tools dongles. The system panicked and I had to do a vanilla install to Mountain Lion and am now stable without Pro Tools. I think it had something to do with the Caldigit card not having the proper driver for my hack.

Have to test each card one at a time. Then it could be the card, or the slot, or something else like a bad cable for your Cyclone unit. If any of those 3 cards are giving you fits, then I would start suspecting a slot or power issue. Can you test them in another system? What about booting to a drive/ partition with a fresh OSX installation?

So far my results have become clear as mud...

Every card works in each slot independently but random combinations change that. I've been trying each combination 3 times, and sometimes it boots fine the first 2 times, then crashes the 3rd. Or if it boots up and I let it sit for 10min without touching it.... it gives me the death screen.

I tried booting into safe mode, and the first time it crashed during the loading process. Also tried booting from a fresh install with similar results.

specs:
MacPro 4,1 / 3.33 Quad-Core Intel Xeon / 10.7.5 / Corsair Neutron SSD Boot / 24GB 1066-DDR3 (replaced this week)
Standard Card arrangement:
Slot1: Cyclone card (currently not connected)
Slot2: Red Rocket
Slot3: GT120
Slot4: Caldigit FASTA-6GU

Cyclone
- GTX 570
- GTX 570
- Decklink SDI
- Firmtek 4-port

thanks for the help... going to take to apple store today and see if they can pin point it anymore.

As an update... I think it's been pin-pointed back to the rocket card/rocket extensions. Some of the panic reports backtrace to com.red.driver.redrocket(1.4.28)

I reinstalled/updated the rocket driver and firmware to the latest, but still is crashing. Swapped rocket for another one, and its fine. So I'm not sure what on the rocket card is causing this, but I'm pretty sure its the source.

What changed between working fine and Kernel panic land? updates? new cards? etc etc.

If the rocket isn't at fault - I just had a nasty one after the 10.8.2 update which was totally fixed by upgrading the Sony SxS UDF & device drivers. This was distinctly different from the other SxS issue related to large file transfers and -36 Error code. The machine wouldn't even boot. Fire it up holding SHIFT key for safe boot and diagnose/update from there.
