So I was wondering if anyone had used, or seen in person the JVC DT-V17 17" 1080p monitor? (http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL101730&feature_id=01)

It's got HD-SDI upto 1080p, battery support, and looks like all the controls you need for adjusting a professional monitor.

My current JVC production monitor does a really good job at accurately displaying an image, but I was wondering how these LCD's stack up. Seems like I read in some magazine that they are pretty close to the Sony's which cost 5x+ as much, but I can't remember where I read that.

The Sony, Panasonic and JVC are all good options. JVC monitors look great, for field work the Panasonic is more popular though. They all cost about the same, within a few hundred dollars.

Yup we use that one at RED - as well as some of the non-DVI equipped Panasonic 720p monitors. Both work very well.

But do you recommend it! The 17" Panasonic and the JVC are both around $2500, but at first glance I would go with the JVC since it's resolution is 1440x900 whereas the panasonic is 1280x768. But Stuart, I guess my real question is how accurate is the color? Is it good enough to grade from a edit suite as much as for field work?

I would just use a cheap 24" LCD monitor for onset monitoring (not color accurate) but since HDMI can only go so far and if the cable breaks then I'm screwed.

How about the 20 or 24 inch ones? they seem bright enough for field work but lack the 12v dc input, and the 24inch has a true 1080 panel. Anyone tried them?

Does anyone know how long the JVC 17" will last on, say a 90 watt battery? The specs say that it's power draw is .56 amps, which times 120 volts = 67.50 watts (I'm guessing per hour) That would mean it should last roughly 80 minutes. Does that concur with what anyone is seeing in the field?

I use the 24" JVC in my Kona 3 FCPro suite. It rocks.

To big for field use.

The 17" Panasonic fills that role nicely.

I just bought the JVC 17" and it's looking great both hooked up to the Red and to my MacBook Pro. However I can't find a way of getting the full picture (including menus) out of the Red into it. I'm trying to use HDMI with MENUS (DVI) option selected as the ops guide says, with only the Red LCD attached. The monitor resolution is 1440x900 and the Red output signal is 1280x848. Has anyone managed to do this?

Hi, Richard. I've been following this post with interest. I am thinking of purchasing the JVC 17" to use as a field monitor and as a 'temporary' color grading monitor (until funds permit the purchase of something better). Have you been able to resolve the issue of getting the full picture PLUS menus to properly display? If so, I would love it if you could take us through the process, and show us the way. Thanks!

No, I still haven't found a way of getting the menus onto the screen. I don't know whether this is because 1280x848 isn't supported by the JVC (strictly speaking it isn't 16:10 but 16:10.6) or that there's something unusual about the Red DVI output.

Still I think it's a really good monitor and comes into its own because you can hook it up to the MBP for a director to view rushes directly from RedCine.

I do. The question is whether you can get the menus on the monitor, and they are only available via DVI.

Does anyone know if it comes with a V-mount on it or if you have to buy it separately?

I found out from Richard that it does NOT come with the v-mount adapter. You have to buy it also from JVC. The model you are looking for is A-E2LCD-J (list $260). However, I have not found ANYONE online that carries it. My contact at JVC said that no one carries it and to contact a JVC dealer to have them order it for you. I contacted Scott Cantrell at Tapeworks Texas about pricing and am waiting a reply. Another solution is to possibly buy the A-E2LCD (bottom of page: http://www.idxtek.com/products/accessories.html) I believe the JVC takes the standard 4 pin xlr and power requirements as the Panasonic, but I am not sure. Even then, that adapter still costs $230 online.

I've had this out on a few jobs now and it's actually quite power hungry. I've been field powering it from lead acid block batteries. I'm not sure if v-locks are the way to go as you're going to need plenty of them for a day in a field. Not sure about facts and figures though.

If you are going to use it for color correction, make sure you have it professionally calibrated, including bias, etc. As a field monitor or client reference monitor, I'm sure it is fine right out of the box, but I would be cautious in terms of performing critical CC on it until you have made sure it passes the tech eval.

Thanks for the reply, Richard. I'm sorry you've had no luck getting the menus onto the screen. Hopefully, someone on these boards has an idea as to how to make it work.

In any event, it's nice to get confirmation that you can hook up the JVC 17" to the MBP to view rushes directly from RedCine. To be clear, I was definitely taking it for granted that one would be able to accomplish this via the JVC 17" or virtually any other 17" LCD monitor usable in the field. QUESTION: If the JVC's ability is relatively unique in this regard, could you (or anyone following this thread)explain why? Thanks in advance for guiding and educating me. I ask the question, because with my current budget, I'm trying to decide between:

1. Splurging on the JVC 24" DU for color grading/studio usage AND picking up the $200USD 17" Hanns-G (recommended by Jarred and Mike Prevette) for field monitoring.........OR:

2. Going with the JVC 17" for field monitoring, and also temporarily using it for non-critical color grading (until a replacement for the JVC 24" or something from RED or another company comes along, AND until I have more funds...)

IF the 17" Hanns-G cannot be used with the MBP to 'view rushes directly from RedCine,' then that might end up being a dealbreaker for me.

I guess the next step for me would be to P.M. Mike Prevette with specific questions about his Hanns-G. I'll do that now. But if anyone could answer the question I posed above, I would greatly appreciate it.

I used the 24" Professional LCD monitor as 1:1 scaling to do montoring the 720P HDSDI signal frpom my RED one.

JVC will also have a 4K projector later this year as well.

I will be booked by JVC - Japan as the 1st party to test the unit in HKG with my RED one and Full Scratch systems in ourt on -line Grading room.

Cheers,

Stewart
