Hi,

We are looking for a projector for our Scratch system.
We are working with a very limited budget (~10K$).

Our research has driven us towards the JVC DLA-RS35

Does anyone have any experience profiling it to film specs?

Thank you in advance for any input on this matter.

Looking at this same projector myself. I just recently saw it calibrated from stock out of the box in THX mode which is supposed to emulate a rec709 representation. The difference between the stock mode and the probed calibration was night and day.
This is a very nice projector best I've seen under $50k. Of course you need to spec out the projector that will match all the variables of your room size/config. Our grading room in 21x19x12. This projector should be mounted between 14-24ft away from your screen for best results.
Anyhow, spend the extra $$ on a professional technician to come out and calibrate the unit and you will be very pleased with the output.
Just curious, what size screen are you installing? We are putting in a 147 inch screen in our room.
Hope this helps.

Hi Ido, Have been considering the same myself with the JVC D-ila`s,they`re pretty excellent projector`s.I`m not sure how they match up to `pro` standards but they can`t be far off at all.Well set up they can throw an image as good as one of the better public theatres i reckon. The following article is pretty informative, callibrating the pj with a really good scaler to industry standards might be a great solution. http://www.cir-engineering.com/rs20.php. Craig the calibrator in the article is a very friendly and helpful fellow by the way.

Also consider a Black Diamond Screen if you need have less than ideal ambient light issues where you edit. http://www.screeninnovations.com/screen-materials/black-diamond-ii-hd-14-black/

Hey Mike, have you pulled the trigger yet?

I'm making my purchase on Monday. Do your research, and find a seller that deals in bulk. The $10K price tag in the stores or major resellers of the RS35 is easy to find at around $5,999.00-$6,299.00 brand new in box, with full manufacture warranty elsewhere on the web. Between this projector and a really good reference monitor your pretty much set. We have a 24' Cinetal Cinemage, and we are purchasing the JVC RS35, and the Panasonic 50' VT25 for grading. Of course, color management is also very important as well but find a technician that can profile your plasma and LCD's via Cinespace as well as do the calibration and have them create your 3D Cube LUT's. Or if its in your budget you can purchase cinespace from Cinetal and do it yourself. The guys at Cinetal are quite friendly and can assist you with any questions you may have. Also, there are a few other great resources of guys that frequent reduser that can help also if your in need. John Tissavary is great!

I'm still researching the type of screen I want and its tough to really know until the room is completely set up. Of course, budget is always a concern but I don't want to cheap out either so finding that ratio of quality to price is still a search for me for now. If you have any other suggestions for me on screen 147 inch, very minimal ambient lighting in the room ie work light and canned lighting with some track lighting all individually controlled on dimmers, on a $2k-3k budget?

Mike, here in the UK there`s still a few of the RS 25`s (750`s in Europe) around new and boxed for around the $5k mark i`ve seen some 20`s for $3.7.Really looking forward to pulling the trigger myself;hope you`ll post some thoughts and reflections from real world use when you`re up and running, your system sounds great..

Sure thing. We locked lease on our space a couple weeks ago and move in on the 28th of this month. Soon as we have the system set up properly I'll post pics and impressions. We are still looking at our grading application options right now, and trying to get all the other bells and whistles together but when its ready it will be cool little DI theatre.

Many thanks Mike,Looking forward to your impressions..all the best for your move..

If you are using the projector for critical color grading you want to stick with a pure Lambertian color neutral matte white screen material.
Stewart Studiotek and Da-lite Affinity screens are ISF certified for accurate reproduction.
Screens with significant gain/contrast enhancement for use under less than theater dark ambient light conditions all exhibit some color shift and inconsistent contrast ratios with changes in viewing angle.

Probe? film profile?

Probe? film profile?

Thank you all for the feedback.

Which probe are you planing to use with this projector?

Once setup can you verify it can bring blacks down to 0.01- 0.03 cd/m^2 while maintaining white at 52 -55 cd/m^2?

Thanks.

I use it for film out, with cinespace and the eye-one pro. I also use a hdlink for 3d lut processing.
My room is small, but the projector has a very good angle, and, even it's 900 lumens, it gives a very bright image (and very good contrast!).
The 3d lut makes the image darker to match the film brightness.
The rs-35 should be even better.

Now I'm getting onto 3D but this kind of projector can be used only with anaglyph method.

Greetings!

Gracias Daniel,

I think your post has convinced me to order the rs-35.

Thanks.

Hi Graham,

I am intrigued by your comment about the screen.

As I understand it for critical grading in a dark room, the screen should be pure white with gamma as close to 1.0.

Am I missing something?
Can anyone elaborate on the screen choosing subject?

Thanks.

Hi Ido,no you`ve missed nothing ,i have!..I was typing `aloud` without my brain engaged,in my particular projector use i can afford to view a less than `grade ideal`image. The Black Diamond screens offer me a solution where my ambient light is not always ideally controlled.

As David so correctly pointed out above ,for "critical" color grading stick to neutral matte type screen.

connection

connection

I assume you're connecting via HDMI, so HDSDI to a HDLink or the like to feed the projector the HDMI signal.

How did you calibrate the projector for Film Out and Rec709?
i1XTreme?

Any step by step help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Ido

Have you setup the grading suite with rs35 yet? How's is running?

Mark Peterson

Still considering all options!

I tried to get one for testing but jvc's reseller in Israel refused.

My main concern is the its capability of the projector in low lights? can it reproduce correct colors in the very low blacks - under 10%?

An other thing, as time passes, anyone can update on future models by JVC or others that might enter this equation?

Thanks.

Reproduction in low light is very accurate, but dependent on your probe. I would not recommend an x-rite i1pro as they are not accurate enought in the shadows for critical work in my experience. We use the Klein K-10, it's extremely accurate, and it's also the fastest probe I've ever used, allowing me to do a full cinespace cube lut in under 45min.

cheers,

JT
