Francis Kenny was awesome enough to come drop in, here is his post pulled up from below for the skimmers:

" Tonight the first episode of Justified's season four premieres on television. A theatrical screening for the press, crew and actors was held this past Saturday evening. I've never received more compliments in my career over the look of a show. I credit the Epic Camera for the compliments.

The Epics size and versatility allowed me to shoot 3 to 4 cameras on almost every set up. The richness of the Epic's look, from color rendition to dynamic range, made non believers into believers. The other cameras I've worked with from Europe and Asia all produce great images. I believe in my heart and mind the Epic produces better images. Perhaps it's the size and versatility of Epic that allows our production quicker set ups with more time to concentrate on producing images rather than spending time on setting up a camera system. To be able to work with a tiny camera, with the heart and soul of the very best film camera and film stock, and have it produce stunning images is a great feeling. It inspires confidence. I never feel overwhelmed by having an 800 lb. gorilla in the room.

I wish everyone could come to our set and see the beauty of this system. I wish every cinematographer knew of Red's support and passion for their products and how much they've helped me. Hands down this camera is the best image producing engine on the market. It is a miracle. It will make all of us better cinematographers. I hope you enjoy the look of the show tonight. Justified runs Tuesday evenings on FX. Thank you Jim and Jarred for giving the world this modern day miracle and making going to work every morning at 430a enjoyable.

Now,

Those words, quoted verbatim, is all Jim should use as advertisement on a spread on American Cinematographer magazine. To be able to so concisely, yet so satisfyingly, express what a technology does for a creator, takes complete belief in such a system. Well said Mr. Francis. It is a joy to know when cinematographers enjoy their work, something I haven't seen all that often in the many sets I've visited. Theirs is usually a labor of love, mired in endless pauses to fix that, tweak this, change, adjust, lower, raise, etc, etc, etc, so anything that reduces that tedious stuff and lets them just concentrate on their craft deserves great praise.

Hat's off to Francis Kenny and crew

Hat's off to Francis Kenny and crew

While I normally avoid adding to the volume of "you rock" posts on RedUser, I have to break my own rule on this one.

IMO Justified is the best example of what can be done with the RED platform so far. Huge props.

Please Jarred, get this show mastered to 4K and offered on Odemax ASAP. The RED haters will be too busy picking their jaws up off the floor to even choke out the mea culpas.

Cheers - #19

Chills

Chills

...reading those words seriously just let chills run down my back...

...especially me just being in the Middle of Intensive Color Grading in Da Vinci my freshly shot Footage of some shiny new Audi Cars in South Africa on our own 2 Epics and seeing and believing what i actually really can get out of that RAW Image when DaVinci is giving its very best is just exhilarating....

Not sure if Jon (Jung) is on here, but just finished a show with him and he had many kind words to say regarding Francis, the series and working with those Epics. He missed them on this last movie (all R1's). :wink5:

Looking forward to getting into the series this winter.

This kind of appreciative note from a working DP should help soothe those annoying threads with people feeling like Red. "just doest do enough free shit for me" eh?

kudos!

very kind words, I look forward to watching the show.

Jarred,

That has to make you feel proud to get such strong, warm praise for the cameras and equipment by RED. It really IS the passion that comes shining through and that makes for better images, better stories.

Cool! I really like this show. What have you shot previous seasons on?

Would be really interesting to hear more what the workflow all the way from on-set to delivery is for this show. Do you master in 4k or do you downscale in post and DI?

You bet it does... reading praise like this makes all those sleepless nights definitely worth it.
