  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

just wrote a review about the C500 ... made me think about my SCARLET

not sure how many of you have experience with the C500, Canon's 4K cinema camera
but I'm quite certain you'll hear about it sooner or later, wether from a director/producer thinking of renting it (instead of your SCARLET) or from a user bragging about his new "magical camera"

i had the chance to work with it a bit (really a bit... wish I had more time but camera had to go back to Canon)
and to write my un-partial review on the experience.

here are a few after thought for fellow RED users ...

Uncompressed 4K is a complete OVERKILL. after debayer, it runs at 35 MB per frame, its hell to backup and work with, and eventually... to this tester's opinion, not that impressive.
Canon's RAW is only 10 bits (yup...) and has very limited RAW control (resolve still does not see it as RAW though it supports it natively) and very basic RAW tools.

so... a 25K camera, then a20K+ external recorder setup and tons of onset storage for this...?

my SCARLET can produce the same if not better results in most normal conditions (yes, the C500 is amazing at low-light) at a fraction of the price and an even smaller fraction of the pain in the ass that it is to deal with these files.
not to mention an EPIC.

unfortunately, I couldn't get the local AjA rep to send me a KiProQUAD on time to test the C500 with ProRes... but that's not RAW now is it...

its fun to have such a capable sensor... but cameras aren't just a sensor.

if anyone's interested, here is a link to my blog post on the camera

Jupp, It's very hard to understand how sweet it is to have 5k compressed, even at 1:3 the packing and compression makes the difference is huge. Working with 5k dpx 16bit is like driving around with the brakes on, while r3d 16 bit raw with 3:1 is totally scrollable over the network and feel like butter in the sun in comparison...

I think Jim will make quite a bundle on his patents for compressed raw when the other guys realize that their uncompressed approach can not really keep up in the resolution race.
