  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just watched a stupid movie ... Three Kings

Threads like this on REDUser are so goofy. But man, I'm with the team here!
Three Kings is one of my favorite films and between it and Fight Club, and The Big Lebowski, college film school in the late 1990's was inspiring and near perfect:-)

I guess to answer your question - when I saw Three Kings I was 19, had long hair (possibly green or blonde or black), slept less than 4 hours a night and drank Mountain Dew for breakfast. Since I had a number of friends from Southern Illinois that shared in those traits, whatever demographic that is, count us in!

90's films FTW!!!

Mountain Dew Drinking 90's dudes with long hair would possibly be the Slacker Demographic?

yeah, I mean we do see some pretty funny threads in here - I remember a hilarious one from last week - but we all probably do ;)

Michael Cioni with long, colorful hair.... Oh, man. ;) I remember '99 well... Not for Three Kings and I didn't have long hair. Truth be told, I still have the same hair cut I did back then, there's just more grey now, but not enough where I can't still count them (or pretend that I can). It also happened to be the year I got married. And the year all the Y2K nut-jobs came out of the woodwork, including one lady who worked for me... bat-shit crazy, she was.

Personally, I have a soft-spot for '80s films. The stuff I watched when I was a kid.... Star Wars, Goonies, Gremlins, ET.. I don't think I've ever willingly drank Mountain Dew (may as well be skunk piss) and if I actually get a full 4 hours of sleep in a night, my wife asks me if I'm feeling alright. They say it's not healthy, but I don't sleep much, never have been able to. Got too much stuff I want to do and there will be plenty of time to rest when I'm dead.

Three Kings? Seems an odd choice to single out for an especially bad review - not the worst movie I've seen by a long shot. Plus as I recall had some interesting photographic choices - Bleach bypass was used which apparently the studio disliked (wanting a more clean upbeat look).

I don't think Three Kings os a movie to write home about but I also don't think its a bad movie. Just really mediocre in my opinion.

1999 - what a great year for filmmaking.

Coincidentally, Raindance just named it on their best war films of all time list...

"Indescribable as a genre film, yet undeniably eccentric, David O. Russell melds biting satire and social awareness together into a film that defies labeling. There’s no great approach to labeling Three Kings as a film of any sort of genre, but one thing is for certain: it’s great. For two hours, Russell introduces the audience to three Gulf War soldiers who spend their time screwing around out of sheer boredom. That is, until, they find a treasure map leading to Kuwaiti bullion, and in the process, recognize the significant social problems that American forces seem to be ignoring during the Gulf War itself. The result is a strange antiwar comedy/satire/adventure/drama film that obeys and fulfills the requirements that each of these genres demand. "

Just saw two films at The Toronto International Film Festival that both blow Three Kings out of the water.
Gypsy, Volcano, two films that you will never see! There are so many films here that totally annihilate most Hollywood films. I reiterate, films that you will never see!

Gypsy is the story of Adam, a boy who, after the death of his father, struggles to cross the boundaries of his settlement and tries to change his siblings' lives. He finds himself in a conflict with racial, social, and cultural prejudice and the unwritten laws of his own Roma community.

With Netflix. Chances are we will all have a chance to see both of these.

maybe the question should be; not who liked the movie, but who didnt?...crickets. I liked it as well. Was shot the only way it could have been by using a bleach bypass process they were able to hide thae fact that it was shot stateside and not in the middle east which im sure that time would have been a bit precarious.

I liked it, I also like seeing movies at festivals, but I don't like people attacking each other for their opinions. there is a difference between thinking it was a bad story, or a badly told story, or a badly made movie three very different things. When it comes to me almost all of those discussions could find a better home on another forum more focused on those things.

Telling filmmakers they will never see a film.... there are a lot of people on here, some who live in Toronto... others who seek out good foreign films... kind of insulting and presumptuous, just because they like three kings they have no taste or desire to see good movies?

attacking a person for his beliefs requesting him show his work of equal value is just as pointless to me, now he could have gone about asking or rather making his statement in a much more tactful way but that's not the point, younger generations, different upbringings are going to effect how some view movies even movies that are seen as classics may seem to them like well stupid movies, it's happened before it will happen again.

mah have a good one and enjoy the rest of the festival... didn't get tickets... enjoy!

play nice!

Have you seen, "Everything is Illuminated"?
A film much superior to "Three Kings", better Story, better Acting, better Directing and better Cinematography.
"Everything is Illuminated" claims to have a budget of Seven Million and has earned less than Two.
This is what we are up against when we produce quality vs sh&*t.

It took Roger Ebert two viewings to appreciate this movie. Not many people are going to do that with a movie they don't like the first time through.

I have seen "Everything Is Illuminated" and it's a terrific script and decently directed, very enjoyable film with a nice message. It's an entirely different kind of movie than "Three Kings". Different genere all together, different approach to the final look and direction, etc... Illuminated doesn't look like a 6 million dollar film to me. I agree that it's hard to bring niche story telling to a mass audience and make a profit.

But you seem to have an axe to grind with "Three Kings" and I assume it's the politics. For what it's worth, Kings is also trying to bring a niche story to a bigger audience and does it well with some very good acting, great direction and a really innovative look. I think it holds up well over time too. Not sure what profit it made but having a big name actor like Clooney or Wood (Illuminated) doesn't hurt. Frankly there are lots of good films with unknown tallent in them that are trying to break out and tell an important story and go widely unheard of. Check out "The Fast Runner" for a really innovative and eye opening film, shot on a very low budget with actors you have never heard of.

I like the prequel "Two Kings" better
