  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just watched a stupid movie ... Three Kings

It's one of my favorite films and I too proudly have it in my Blu-Ray collection so neener neener neener to the OP. :arf:

I think it is OK for him not to like the movie too, and I agree with you that an open dialogue on what is good or bad with the film is more constructive but I guess I missed how "Just watched a stupid movie" (not listing reasons for the statement) was constructive. My mistake for not reading between the lines.

I agree the "stupid movie" bit in the title set a negative tone, but that doesn't mean we can't steer in a positive direction. Hopefully the OP will come back and join the dialog.

I'm already learning new stuff from this thread, e.g. bleach bypass processing. Good stuff!

Fantastic film with great camera work, acting and tone. It's one of those movies that simultaneously embraces what is reality while offering the viewer angles of that reality that we could never see, even if it was our real, reality.

:)

If you're talking about the David O. Russell movie, it's honestly one of my favorite movies of the past several years. So I guess whatever demographic I fall into, you could count me.

Lucas

Was it more like 1999? I didn't think it was that recent ....

I loved Three Kings. Definitely not a "stupid movie".

I think what Mr. Butterfield is trying to say is that he doesn't quite care or understand the film's politics-- that's what he means by "stupid movie." Sigh.

Three Kings....

Was the BS factor a bit high in spots? Yes.
Was there some moments in the film that would make any ex-military person, or someone familiar with military operations, particularly the first Gulf War, scratch their head and say "WTF?"? Yes.
Is the premise of the film, soldiers running off to find stolen Kuwaiti gold, realistic? Yes.
Was the film entertaining? Yes.

I actually didn't care for the film that much the first time I saw it. Mostly due to my usual outlook on military-themed films. Some of the story progression feels a bit forced in spots, there are some inaccuracies or liberties taken to set up the story. Of course, most are minor and even arguable or completely plausible.. Nothing there that falls into the realm of purely indulgent fantasy, such as Inglourious Basterds. All things considered, it's a pretty decent and entertaining film. It's not a one-sided political film either and regardless of how one feels about the first Gulf War and subsequent events surrounding that region, I think there are interesting bits that can be taken from the film by anyone.

The color grading, since it came up, was nice overall. I thought some of the over-stylized shots, neon-colored sky or whatever shots, went a bit too far and detracted somewhat. We see a lot more of that these days with mostly all post processes going fully digital. So I don't think the color effects would be as jarring to an audience today.

...Been a while since I've watched it. I have the DVD somewhere in my collection. Might have to revisit it soon.

ON a funny note. Now you can get a convertible Lexus.

Yeah also kinda funny in a way... Lexus debuted their first convertible, the SC-430, in January '99 at the Paris Auto Show -- just 9 months before the Three Kings premiere.

However, it was a 2000-year model, which was subsequently delayed, and didn't go on sale until 2001. Hehe. They produced the folding hard top SC-430 through 2010 and have now replaced it entirely with the 2011 IS model.

.
I thought it was pretty average, but it wasn't terrible by any means...
As far as grading goes, if I remember correctly, parts of the movie were shot on reversal stock and was cross processed for neg. result. I thought, at the time it was extremely ballsy thing to do, considering, that cross processing from pos to neg increases contrast a great deal and the action was in the desert. For this fact alone I saw it in the theatre and was happy to pay for the ticket.

Same here.
