  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

just in from the Oscars 2017

"Jackie" not being nominated is a travesty.

So cool that Linus Sandgren is nominated for La La Land. We used to work together on various projects and it was not too many years ago we where in Moscow together doing this thing... He clearly made his way up in the industry since then :)

OMG that is so awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!

i love bradford young and wondering how come arrival got nominated for cinematography? it must be joke or something

Studios spend upwards of 20 ~ 25 million dollars lobbying to get in the Oscars bandwagon. Sometimes it is not the best movie that gets in there but the one who has the deepest pockets.

I had the amazing fortune of working on Lion, on the drone team and on A and B unit as gimbal operator.

All the Drone shots are on the Dragon! And they're lovely shots that play an important role in the storytelling.

There was no Steadicam in India, it was all the MoVI M15 with an Alexa M.

Interesting specs:

Arrival - Alexa XT (2.8 anamorphic) 2.39
La La Land - 35mm film (Kodak 5219 & 5207) 2.55 scope
Lion - Alexa XT & M (and some Red) 2.39
Moonlight - Alexa XT Plus (2K pro res) 2.39
Silence - Alexa Studio (2.8K Arriraw) 2.39

It's the first time I can remember every film nominated for Best Cinematography was scope. And -- no surprise -- the ASC Awards had the identical nominees.

All beautiful films, each completely different styles, really well done. I loved La La Land and thought it was one of the most beautiful-looking films I've seen in several years, but all of the nominees are really good. I laughed out loud when I saw the old CinemaScope logo at the beginning on La La Land, which I thought was an interesting touch (as was the old 2.55 aspect ratio).

Marc, love this. Scope is back, bigger than ever!

I think comepetition with mobile and TV is pushing more movies into the highly "cinematic" choice of Scope - feels so premium and distinguished.

Bill, did you see "Jackie"? Stephane is the French Chivo, IMHO, LOL!

I think La la land had such intricate and thought out camera and lighting work, that it is head and shoulders over the rest and deserves to come out victorious. Great craftsmanship and artistry rolled up in one.
Now, a movie I don't understand being in that list is Arrival. I loved the movie itself. I thought the cinematography was sub par. Flat, all seemingly uninspired soft lighting, playing safe on framing and movement... Hardly any contrast or color contrast.

Silence is shot on film - digital was only used for low-light situations. (Night scenes and dusk scenes with torch)

Hoping that my fellow Swede Linus wins it, but he also has a good chance. There's some impressive work with the camera in La La Land. Lion, Moonlight and Silence feels a bit "normal" in my opinion, there's some traditional images (nothing wrong with that), but it's nothing really new. Arrival and La La Land had images that felt fresh, creative etc. So I'm hoping Arrival or La La Land for this one.

Christopher, I met him today at the open house that the ASC holds once a year. He represented himself, his craft and his country admirably well. He tirelessly answered questions and was very willing to share his experiences and insights. Many of the other people there were equally gracious! But he endured a non-stop barrage of questions and constant gaggle of people around him. He came off as an exceedingly decent man.
