  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

i am very very very impressed with the new OLPF so far with the test shots. The Skin tones are poping out nicely .Makes me wonder, If Dragon was released with this OLPF when it was launched it would had much more impact against the other systems.

Attached two comparisons I did with the STD OLPF against the STH OLPF.

I've never really felt it was a problem but you can grade it out when you see it.

Also, Christoph, that test is really helpful, thanks.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but what's DEB?

Not dumb at all. In Redcine X there is a checkbox labeled DEB right under the temperature and tint controls. It's RED's answer to removing the red/blue noise that is more prevelant in skintone olpf footage (can be appplied to any olpf footage though). It tends to give the noise a more monocromatic but green-tinted noise. You need to be in full res to see it take place, if I'm not mistaken.

NOTE: If you're using a red rocket-x, it needs to be disabled to take advantage of DEB.

For what it's worth, I just switched out my Standard OLPF for the STH OLPF and my completely unscientific impression is that the STH OLPF looks MUCH better to my eye, way more filmic. Super happy with it.

Hey everyone, I finally got some time and pulled some screenshots showing that the red orb flare DOES occur with the Standard OLPF if you shoot straight into the sun.

I have three examples below. The first one was at an aperture of F3.5 and the other two were at an aperture of F13. So unfortunately it is possible to get the ugly red flares on a wider aperture.

Is everybody getting the red orb on their Standard OLPF as well?

Yes. Especially if shooting at specific wider angles and deeper apertues. Remember the Standard OLPF is fairly close to the Low Light Optimized OLPF in terms of general optical perormance. However, it gets you a spoonful of the nicer color that gets you somewhat closer to the goodness the Skin Tone - Higlight OLPF without some of the greener/film-like gripes some have.

The main problem I have had practically with the STH have been when working with VFX people and motion graphics. The matching of VFX elements to the filmed material often cost a little more than when it's cleaner and I tend to shoot at ISO800 because it feels like the sweet spot when lighting (probably because I've always done it with Alexa and Red over the years), but also because I really like how the grain structure looks at that ISO. I ordered my Weapon with the Standard OLPF only because I think I need something in between the STH and LLO. The LLO always intrigued me as an option to go back to how I used to work with the MX, but I always felt that it was a kind of degradation of the latest tech to look like old tech, going back to clipped highlights and digital skin tones. I really hope I made the right call to only go with Standard, but I feel like I did. Now I can shoot a cleaner ISO800 and if I really want texture I can do it like on the Alexa and shoot at ISO1280 if I want more of that.

When it comes to the red orbs I don't know, I think there are always faults to sensors and cameras that sometimes gets a little too much attention than it needs to. For me, I haven't seen any Red material from anyone where I really were annoyed by either the light smearing or red orbs. For me personally the thing I disliked about the STH was the bokeh distortion on the sharpness roll-off. This is something that I've researched into a lot and it came down to being an OLPF issue, being almost invisible on the LLO and very noticeable on the STH. I can now easily spot if something is shot on Dragon whenever a production use technically perfect lenses like the Master Primes, because the sharpness roll-off have that noticeable distortion. But I also know that a lot of people don't care about that, the same way I don't care about the red orbs that much. So, if the red orbs are there on the Standard and the sharpness roll-off distortion is less apparent I'm more than happy with the Standard, because I want the lenses to be responsible for distortions of the image, not the OLPF. As soon as my weapon comes home I will do some testing.
