  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Joystick suggestion for Epic and Scarlet

Ah, but Pawel, the Impero has materialised.

It's everything else thats on hold:blush:

hehehe. I lost track of where it is at and what is holding what.

Words fail me. Is there a mistake somewhere along the line? A stylus focus system for a camera in "stills" mode I can understand, much like allocating focus points in a traditional DSLR.

But using it to pull focus on moving images?

That would be red-volutionary.

I guess this means newer red lenses will have motors to allow this? Or will there be an additional RED FF unit to allow it on all lenses?

Thanks for melting my brain once again.

I'm reserving my judgement until i see this in action.

I don't think that the focus-puller will be a job of the past.

I dont trust any sensor to judge how far a person is and focus for the point. Yes, in good lighting conditions.. you might get away with it... but so far.. in poor lighting conditions.. havent seen something that does the job well, even if the point of focus is already made. red maybe able to make some revolutionary sensor to detect distance of objects in low light... but still.. I'm sure that there will be an instance where you'd have to pull focus.

there are some other ways for cameras to focus properly.. which is from the image itself. i dont trust those either.

Of course my previous comment wasn't meant as literal, but if this is true, RED has significantly changed the art of focus pulling. At the very least, 1st AC's on low-budget films will have a much easier time doing their job than previous.

However, a lot needs to come together to make this possible... motorized focusing unit/motorized lenses, accurate distance sensor, lots of programming (probably the easiest for RED), etc. But I'd love to be stunned and see this work.

well alot of consumer cameras and even the iphone have touchscreen focusing. only difference is they are not using switchable/mounted lenses but the technology has been out there for quite a while. will be a nice option for RED.
I held the Scarlet Prototype with a 100mm RPP on it the other night and it is a nice piece of gear, granted it was hollow aluminum :) but it is a nice form factor for sure.

jay.. okay.. wait alone then.. ehehehehehe

It is all in the execution of this feature though. You have to wait. You would need a way to control the speed of the rack for one, and don't AF systems have to make minute corrections in order to find that focus? How could you then select a point and initiate the rack at the speed you desire without allowing the lens to first find it?

I am extremely cautious in my optimism for this one, not because I think Red can't, but because my brain can't. :)

I wonder if there's any chance of an iPhone App to do this... The new cams were said to be 'wirelessly equipped' (paraphrase), were they not?

Just spitballing here but this is the sort of thing which you could have a lot of fun with.

If you could choose focus by screen(X,Y) then you can do all kinds of fun things like tieing it to facial recognition and tracking. Give the AC the ability to define subjects or people and racking between them regardless of distance.

Forget stylus, let the focus be 'subject based'. Instead of distance based. With sufficient image processing the stylus wouldn't define "Where" in the screen you want to focus it would define "What" in the screen you want to focus on.

I've been thinking of this for a while. What if there was a little handheld monitor that you could touch/drag a stylus across thereby controlling where the camera focuses. You could do fast racks by touching different points, or drag as someone is moving in the frame. This is such an obvious idea but I haven't heard anyone mention it. Doesn't sound too far fetched with smart lenses and lens mounts. What do ya think?

plus...
the technology used to control of where a face (or specifically eyes) is looking at on monitor or screen and translating that into where the focus is, removing any direct physical control... or remotely via computer offsite.

hey Noah could you explain that a little more? I think I don't fully understand.

lets say you look at a live video on your compter from your camera, and you stare at the middle of the video, your webcam on your laptop reads the position of your eyes and where they are looking at the screen and focus on that point. your eyes move to the top of the screen and the webcam and computer translate that into where the eyes focus and the camera focus to the top.
