Are people finding useful joystick controls to directly control
the framing on gimbals ?...or not so much useful or not at all useful and a bad idea..?

Totally depends on what you are shooting. They can be usefull for certain shots, others not so much. I did a commercial with a 2 axis gimbal mounted at the end of my steadicam and had a joystick on the post to control tilt. They certainly have their place, but in general I find gimbals just too imprecise for critical framing. A joystick doesn't make them any better. The day they come out with encoded precision positioning for handwheels, will be the day they compete with full sized remote heads. Although I think there is a reason those heads cost upwards of $20k.......
