  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Joomla or Flash based WEB Site??!!??

I had written a loooong reply to you Ketch, but my browser crashed. The essence of it was to not go the Flash route. Not because it's dead, but because the risk of locking yourself into a position where updating the site can be tricky, cumbersome and potentially expensive.

This is a really good point and probably the main reason I love Wordpress so much. On RED Day Tonaci and I were updating www.cinetoolz.com realtime from our iPhones. Wordpress makes it so easy to add new posts and content and you can upload images, video, files etc. right from within that post and their are backend apps for the iPhone and iPad. Adding multi-media was one of the biggest pains with Joomla. Maybe there is a flash program that allows you to easily add content like this but I am not aware of one.

You want something that can grow as you need and something that is simple, fast and something that supports many different platforms.

I have been working as a webdesigner/developer since 94 so I believe my experience should have some weight in this. You should go for something that is somewhat "open" and something that is easy to update (basically something CMS-based). There's a lot of great systems out there - Wordpress being a very capable and widely adopted system and there are many developers that can help you in that direction. Something worth taking into consideration too.

Let me know if there's anything I can help you with.

Ha ha, sorry about that Tony, funny in off, well not funny at all actually, the same happened to me this morning on my friend's computer, I'm so used to the auto safe on my system when writing that didn't came to mind to do safes, so the lights when off, and so did my 14 pages:cuss:

Form the info so far received, I believe that my mind is clear on utilizing Joomla, which I already have many plug ins and seven site up with the Dominion Template, or go with WP or Squarespace.

My frustration comes mostly from luck of honesty from the people I have worked with, and now find my self so tight on Budget that I have to do it my self, no good, I could have finished this sites long time ago.

I like your style so definitely would not mind at all to work out some kind of deal with you working on the sites in order of priority.

But I'm also strongly reconsidering the way I was let to believe was the best way to have all this sites, and possibly try to have a Mother Site with sub sites for the Partner companies, not sure if it can be done.

Yeah Justin, that is definitely a plus, even so I would not do it from an iPhone but from my iPad, half blind you know, he he, but out of your sites I do like the layout of this one:

Since a lot of redusers seem to be real web professionals, does anyone know a good coder for wordpress plugins? Getting quotes right now from all over the place, so maybe you guys can help me out? Seems to be common to be a web designer first and after that being in the movie industry... :)

Thanks Tobias, I wil look thru the link for the WP templates, as far as Slideshopro, I already have it Director off course, purchased as one of the many plug ins for the Joomla, does it also work with WP type Templates?

Yeah it does:
http://slidepress.net/

Haven't tried it myself yet, but I'm sure it's solid... Good luck with all those sites Ketch, let me know if I can be of any assistance.

He he, great, thanks Tobias, at list if it was to be decided to move to WP I can use it.

Just not really sure, so many choices, and after visiting all links provided and looking in to each one option, I see that Joomla, Drupal, Squarespace and Wordpress are similar in some ways, but some offer less of this but more of that, and so on.

For me important is the SEO, in fact possibly the most important, for this Flash and now even Joomla it self comes to a questionable point, as extra work is needed in order to insure a SEO friendly site, not sure about that, security is also an other important issue, as I definitely don't want some one popping in to my CMS and destroying it.

Problem is that I also ultimately need an easy CMS system so that I can edit, upload material and change at will, including Pictures and videos.

This cannot be stressed enough either. I was just updating my site with some credits music samples and just smiled at the simplicity of adding audio files to my site with almost NO effort. Same thing with videos and pictures as well.

I have not tried updating word press from my iPhone yet, I'll have to try that. Now what would be awesome is to be able to extract a still from my Red Scarlet, send it to my iWhatever, then push that through my wordpress. Sometimes when sitting around waiting for the director and DP to decide how to move the sun in the sky, I have time to post some behind the scenes :)

Ketch I think if you feel comfortable using Joomla then stick to it. It's a nice CMS and the SEO isn't so bad if you install some Plugins. At the same time, I don't think you'd have any problems at all changing to Wordpress (or any other CMS's discussed for that matter). As many have pointed out already, Wordpress is reeally easy to use...

Well I have just started really, so any CMS will do, he he.

but is not just about being easy to use, is also about SEO, Security, Plug Ins, and so on.

I believe that I do fill more attracted to Wordpress, as squarespace is nice, but as Joomla and others offers less SEO integration, and need plug ins and rewrites to make SEO friendly, I don't really like to deal with that.

Since Worpress also uses Slideshopro, and I already have it, then Stills and Videos are a no issue in either one, but I know now that Wordpress wins hands down vs. any other in SEO friendly.

But again is it Wordpress safe?

Safe for my content, for the IP integrety, and for my Shopping cart and CC Paypal access.

Wordpress really impresses me with how often they put updates out. And updating your Wordpress version is literally as simple as clicking one button. That is big because I used to procrastinate with updating Joomla because it was a pain. Constant releases means Wordpress is able to fix any security issues before they become a real problem.

This is great, so far I did update the Joomla two times, and changed the Template three times, well actually, again I didn't do it the web designer did, and charged me every time.

But the more I look at Wordpress and the more it seems so static of Template ;~( Possibly do to not having yet found a nice in off Template?

I gues this is not so bad:

http://test.nattywp.com/preview.php?theme=flashlog

But I still like to have it like the one you have with the wide center page, one line, I don't like multiple lines sites, just one large line and titles on top, this one,

http://royalgalacticmedia.com

What Justin said. Just remember, as soon as you have a lot of plugins installed, they have to update too. So don't just press that button right away.

There's two sides to the security issue here. Wordpress has gotten really popular, and as soon as something is that popular, it attracts people who want to do harm. So I would say yes, Wordpress is as save as everything else out there. Just make sure to pay attention to the tips out there how to make the installation safer than it is when you're installing it for the first time.

You can change the static look easily by adding plugins. And if you don't find anything you like just do a mockup yourself in photoshop and let a company convert it for you to a theme. Prices are not that steep, I think 1 page starts at around $100.

Well at this point it seems that the obvious has come to conclusion:

A) "Stay Away form a FULL FLASH" site, but some flash is okay,

B) Wordpress is best known for SEO friendly and ease of use, but some what limited with out plug ins, and plug ins can make Wordpress just as complicated as Joomla, Drupal or any other.

C) Drupal, is just something totally new to me, and seems even stiffer curve to learn, even so very powerful.

D) Joomla, which I already have installed to both the server fro all sites, and have various plug ins, such as K2, and SlideshoPro Director version, very powerful, and multi user for writing Blogs and articles etc, not SEO friendly out of the Box like Wordpress, but seems that with a plug in it does become SEO friendly, just not sure How this is done and if is done every time you place an article or just once.

Also even if at the beginning the sites will be simple and with little info, adventualy will grow to become very complex sites, and if not properly structured from the start will be a mess, so I think possibly Joomla here is the winner.

Just confused now, this started as a Joomla vs. Flash, and it has turned in to Should I stay with joomla and learn it, or move to Wordpress?

I'd say this, you know Joomla. Install a version of wordpress that you are just going to blow away and play with it. Test some plugins, test the update features and such, then you'll know for sure. You'll spend a night doing it, but you'll also get your hands dirty and know.

That is what I did for mine. I liked it so I started using it.

Also, there are TONS of people out there that can help you add things in that are not there pretty easily. (On both systems really).

Ketch here are a couple large header wordpress themes I found:

http://demo.themelab.com/
http://www.freewpthemes.net/preview/inbloom
http://www.freewpthemes.net/preview/simplegreen
http://www.freewpthemes.net/preview/puzzled
http://www.skinpress.com/demo/
http://envato.com/

Wordpress started out as blogging software and grew into a CMS and it seems theme designers are a bit slow in transitioning away from the blog look. There is absolutely nothing inherent in Wordpress that makes it look like a blog it just happened to be the look people were asking for in the beginning.

Thanks again guys, I just also Edited the original pthread with some more info learned thanks to you guys, and I have already downloaded few teams from Wordpress, and actually had once an article there, so I remember it to be easy, but the priorities that I have and the necessities that I have for the sites, might be a bit too complex for wordpress?

Don't worry, it's a mighty powerful CMS, don't let the simplicity fool you... :)

*EDIT*

Thanks so far for all the responses and assistance, much appreciated, even so this was for me more a question about, stay with Joomla, or move to Flash.

But others have been introduced and after reading and searching and visiting every link provided, I'm now leaning towards Wordpress, and or Staying with Joomla.

A) SEO in Wordpress is best right out of the box, Joomla needs Plug in, not sure how this works, if needed once or every time you write an article or upload pictures, videos, and or keywords, and tags.

B) Security I guess seems pretty much the same for both, with updates some what of a pain some times to do, but I guess this will have to be done my a webmaster on Payroll, he he.

C) Even so the sites will start simple in off, will quick grow to be very complex ones full of info, videos, and pictures, with Super Blogs and multiple users, I guess Joomla here might be the best choice.

D) Joomla is more powerful, but Wordpress camn almost be as well with all the plug ins available, but this can defeat the purpose of Wordpress know for its simplicity, which will go away when adding certain Plug ins which might not be as simple.

So I guess I might as well do stay with Joomla and work on the choosen template, calling upon WebMaster for complicated changes and or add ons, security updates and so on.. or maybe really just jump in to Wordpress>!?
Now with Joomla awaiting the new 1.6, gets me even more confused, what if aI build the site with 1.5, then what, and with all this templates I just go nuts, ha ha.

http://demo.rockettheme.com/?template=dominion

A) You'll install plugins just one time and then forget about them. Its' simple with Joomla and even easier with Wordpress. Wordpress offers a great deal of simplicity when it comes to upgrading.

B) With Wordpress, you would not need to have someone on payroll.

C) I disagree. When you do a blog-style website, Wordpress is clearly the better choice.

D) I honestly think Wordpress is by far more powerful than Joomla. I've worked a long time with Joomla and was hesitant to jump to Wordpress, but so far, I'm impressed.

Couple of other points: handling plugins in Wordpress is a LOT easier in Wordpress, upgrading, installing, cusomisation. The only thing where Joomla is easier to work with is in regards of searching for plugins. There are so many plugins for wordpress that it's kinda hard to search for the right ones.
You want to have an installation of Wordpress on your own server. Lots of configurations can only be done with your own copy on your server.
For years, I've been a firm beliver that Joomla was the best Open Source CMS out there for easy websites, but for me, Wordpress has taken that spot.
If you really really need to build huge sites, something like Typo3 might be a choice, but in most cases, Wordpress is just fine and in some regards even more powerful.
But hey, there's no wrong choices here. Just go with what you feel the most comfortable... :)

Ha ha, you guys are killing me!! But I love you!

Now you make me lean towards "Wordpress" even so I will loose some already purchased Plug ins for Joomla, like K2 from Joomlaworks, and such, but I guess one of the most important ones "Slideshopro Director" will work on Wordpress so its okay, then I have some other plug ins which will have to see if they work.

So now then I have to find a good Wordpress Template, installed in the server and see to customize it, none of which will happen with out help, he he, since I don't go in to the server, I imagine that nothing changes as far as email etc. as we are not going to be doing anything to the any of the actual domain names and that the server remains the same, just changing Templates, correct?

Some Templates I like the fill of it to customize:

This was what I had chosen in Joomla to customize to a single column: http://demo.rockettheme.com/?template=dominion

From Wordpress:
