  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The motion clip...

I just did an "Export for the Web" in QT 7 so the clip looks a bit flat...

Very nice. I see one serious problem with this footage though... someone needs to clean my windows! Fortunately my wife doesn't frequent reduser.net. In my defense, I'll point out that the outside of those windows are quite high off the ground, and the inside side of the glass is clean.

Jim,

I'm not trying to apply any rule just because I'm trying to discuss and to have my opinion about the topic even if I'm maybe not right at all.

It's more about discussion that is open here (also means that any competition can very fast get what they want to hear).

At the end I'm trying to say what I think that could be better option.

i know that I have a long record to try to "advising" RED for a certain solution but also must say that I was't so successful on that at all

BUT MUST SAY THAT I THINK THAT I WAS TOTALLY RIGHT.

Also I don't need to say more and maybe older members of this forum should know more about it.

But anyway it's just about open discussion and we should continue now with topic on the tread...

Sanjin... your opinions are respected here. But you just posted your doubt of HDRx working for motion, which is not accurate. You are critiquing something you haven't used and don't know how it works. It just seems counter-productive in this case to pass a judgment based on what you think we might be doing.

No disrespect intended here... I just think your negative opinion is incorrect.

Jim

Jim,

could be that I'm wrong on that 100% (as usual) but also waiting for more samples to play with it (HDRx motion samples in R3D files).

Also I'm mostly (but not always) try not to be negative critique to the things that are still in development.

Actually I can't wait and mostly rush to say in advance that sometimes it can get a sort of wrong understanding.

I think waiting for more footage is a good plan. Plus wait for the tools that Red is going to deliver. Please try and refrain from posting more about your doubts and speculation in this thread. Thanks.

Sanjin... you are a very valuable and entertaining asset to reduser. It is rare that we disagree. I just have more info in this case. :-)

I just created my own easy HDRX by breaking down normal and highlights pass into two separate 16 bit DPX streams. Then I combined them in FilmMaster with proper transfer mode applied (just like you'd do it in Photoshop) and was able to grade them separately, while watching the result. What can I say, WOW! This is new grading world. Too bad I'm not allowed to post the result:-)

If it is a good result... you can post it. :-)

Mostly we didn't want to see a bunch of experimenting gone wrong.

Thanks Jim,

I very glad that you like my very special being or present here at the forum...

Very nice... certainly shows off the wide range of grading possibilities.

I assume this went pretty quickly in your workflow?

Jim

Thanks Jim.
It did went quickly. The only manual thing I had to do is to create both streams by hand. Luckily it is only 45 frames. I wouldn't want to do it on a feature:-) Is there a provision to keep two streams of video, like it was originally stated, so this process could be done easily in post?

There is a way to export separate tracks... we have that in our engineering apps. It will be in RCX shortly.

Perfect. Looking forward to trying it.
I just tried to recreate the same look by exporting easy HDRX already applied and I have to admit, that it is not as easy to achieve the same look as with two separate tracks. It can be done, but much more work is required. Grading with two separate tracks feels to me as RAW grading, where you can change your mind at any point and completely change the look. But I certainly can see, where people will just use easy HDRX.

As cool as it is... I see two uses -
Practical: to rescue otherwise "un-shootable" interior/exteriors (about 10-15% of locations) = INVALUABLE MUST HAVE TOOL FOR DIGITAL CINEMA

Creative: some are going to use it exclusively for their entire narrative in creative and cool new ways = PRICELESS

Jim I thought I didnt like your still grade at first.. then I saw the motion
The motion is just beautiful. Perfect to my eyes. Thanks. Amazing

Thanks but I really wouldn't consider that a grade... just a neutral place to see what's there and grade from.

Jim

The motion of the HDRx™ clip is so filmic to me. I don't know why. I know Adam Wilt had that interesting article about the motion looking filmic. I didn't fully understand what he was talking about, but I was excited by his enthusiasm.

I just have to say, this footage looks incredible. I know you guys have put a herculean amount of work into this, and I just wanted to say thank you.

5k jpeg frame grab

5k jpeg frame grab

Here's a 5120x2700 jpeg grabbed from a 24fps stream:

It's incredible to me that this camera is capable of making 120 of these a second. Also note that this is without a particularly pretty sky, but it was fairly clear for Los Angeles. The motion version of this is interesting because it looks like a really detailed still until you notice that the blimp is moving.

Great image John. I had been thinking along the same lines.. overcranked, 5K, and HDRx™ when I need it...
