  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

JJ Abrams and Undercovers...

Michael thanks for sharing your amazing set up complete with ipads for viewing dallies etc. Are the ipads only used for viewing? Or are they also used by JJ for adding remarks, suggestions etc? Thanks!

What iPad app is he using?

You could do it pretty easily just with Safari - if the Mac was running, say, the Apache web server (it's included with Mac OS X) and you had a wireless base station on the cart. Just have the R3D files rendered out of RCX as 720p H.264 files and then have a script or something that updates a little HTML file with links and screen grabs.

It may not be how they're doing it, but you could make a damn good system that way with a bit of PHP or Python.

I'm pretty jazzed that it seems...in these threads you get Jim's announcement and almost invariably you also get some followup from someone working on the project... usually with pictures.

Very nice.

"Gorgeous dynamic range and astoundingly low-light friendly.
... It blew my mind." JJ Abrams

I shot my first MX feature in Sydney in April/May ("X") and my emotions ran just as high.
Shooting in the middle of the night in incredibly dark alleys, with almost no added lighting (with narrow shutter angles sometimes!!!) whole new worlds of cinematography opened up in those weeks.

I've never before had a thrill like that one, at least not about advances in motion picture technology.

MX Rocks

MX Rocks

Well,
The sun was coming down, on one of the last days of shooting our latest feature, we were running late and had a few more shots. The DP just kept shooting... we would never had done this with another camera.
Some cast & crew could not believe we were still rolling.
We got the shots...

MX stands for Magic hour Xtended....

Can't wait to see what kind of low-light sensitivity the future MONSTRO sensor will have.

It's a bright future ahead for all filmmakers, specially the indie ones.

@Mike Burton

I believe its the 2K Dell LED Ultra-Sharp which ain't a bad monitor but I still prefer my Flanders Scientific for confidence viewing. The D.T. is using RedCineX to generate the Dailies so no vectorscope or waveform options but the histogram is pretty useful. I'm sure their calibrating to a Chart or how ever Brian likes to do it for the dailies generation?

The Outpost Cart is pretty well laid out....

It's a Dell u2711, they are great for Data Management because of Resolution. They have a 10 bit panel. 2560x1440 resolution and can take the 2k output from the Rocket. Also, they have Display port, HDMI, 2 dual link dvi, and Component. It's the same panel as the iMac with a CCFL backlight for greater color reproduction. I wouldn't grade on it, but I believe grading is better done in a dark theater under super controlled conditions.

@Dane Brehm

I'm glad you like the general layout. Chris Peariso, Michael and myself have worked hard to build the most cost effective carts that can really push through large amounts of data.

This is the link to the monitor http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=224-8284&redirect=1

The current price is several hundred less than before, super great deal (I should sell these things for a living :)

Truly inspirational.. thanks for sharing valuable information, Michael.

BTW Jim, you've created something that is remarkably fascinating to live with. Things like this just keep coming. With Red, every minute in my life has been exciting.. times ten.

Cheers,
