"We're shooting Undercovers on the RED camera -- it could not look better. Gorgeous dynamic range and astoundingly low-light friendly. Before the RED, when the sun was almost set, you'd have to wrap. This camera gave us added shooting time, just when the light was at its most beautiful. If that's not enough, last night while filming (can I use that word?) the final scene, I was able to watch dailies on an iPad. Not from the day before but from the SAME DAY. An incredible picture, available instantly to view, grade, edit, anything. It blew my mind." JJ Abrams

Congratulations to Jim and RED team on another great review. Looking forward to watching.

The MX sensor is a dream come true.

That "added shooting time" may just be one of the most valuable benefits for an indie filmmaker.

Given Mr. Abrams's status in the community and his statements above, I'd simply say its one of the most valuable benefits for any filmmaker!

Not just the added shooting time, but the quality of light during these transitional times, can be astounding. I can think of many times, when the shoot would have benefited greatly from having an mx sensor. I am looking forward to using a lightweight epic, or s35 scarlet, with a small crew during the "golden hour"! The nature of the constantly changing light at these times, means that it should be easier, than moving around a heavy cine-rigged redone with big head etc.

OUTPOST 2D

OUTPOST 2D

Light Iron is happy to be working on Undercovers with DT Brian Udoff who is manning one of our onset processing laboratories, Li OUTPOST. We make 2D and 3D versions of the system which are in use of a number of file-based projects across the globe with 32TB SAS raids custom built by the experts at MAXX Digital. I also have to give special thanks to DIT Steve Freebairn who pioneered the power behind custom, automated mobile dailies which he and I have used on numerous projects together, including Pirates. Thanks to the power of the iPad, mobile dailies infrastructures like OUTPOST are able to compress time, not just files. -That is another big step in the right direction for increasing creative control on any project, small or large.

Here are a couple pics of our OUTPOST system (there are 2 on Undercovers-one for main unit and 1 for second unit) which Brian operates on location and on the stage. One element I encourage everyone to consider from this discussion is cost. By mobilizing the dailies process (which gets better literally by the week due to custom software and hardware improvements) we find that traditional laboratory budgets actually decrease by a minimum of 15%. With the right talent and infrastructure, the more you mobilize on set, the more your dollars are able to amortize and stretch -all the while delivering instant feedback with sound, picture, grading in 2D and even 3D real-time playback all from one system.

That really is awesome Michael! How do the compressed dailies make their way back to the iPad? Are they transferred wirelessly or copied via the dock connection?

David-
You can do it either way you like. Streaming over a wireless feed - password protected, or localized to the device, complete with password login and watermarking.

Cool. Can't wait to see Undercovers!

Love the Outpost system too, Michael.

Hey Michael,

Are you using any color management tools on set such as Cinespace for your monitors or is all one light correction and such happening back at LI base? From the pics I see a Dell 24" or 30" monitor. How are you keeping your color path consistent?

Hmmm.... J.J. or Rodney... Gee, I wonder who's opinion sways me most... I wonder who can get a table faster... Let's see...

Actually both of their opinions are valid... as opinions.

Its the facts that should sway you most.
