  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have spent the past 45 years building “inventions wrapped in art”.

Just now turning 70 and having a few health issues, it is now time for me to retire.

I will be shutting down the HYDROGEN project, ending a career that has included Oakley, RED Digital Cinema and HYDROGEN. I am very proud to have worked with many great people over the years who have signed on to the vision.

RED Digital Cinema will continue stronger than ever with Jarred, Tommy and Jamin at the controls. Komodo is about to be launched… and the HYDROGEN One will continue to be supported in the future.

I want to thank everyone for the support I have felt over the years…

Jim is one of the greatest visionaries of our time… and he has accomplished more than most leaders do in a lifetime. Over and Over again. He taught me everything I know, and as sad of a day as this initially may be, I am filled with joy that he finally is taking time to enjoy life.

For RED CAMERA owners/users and fans, nothing changes over here. Jim will continue to smack me on the side of the head when I need it, and his ideas and direction will still flow into this company for years to come. We have prepared for this, and we are stronger than ever.

Thanks Jim, for everything.

Wow! Such an amazing man and incredible accomplishments to say the least. Jim you have had a great influence on so many and while I don’t know you personally I sincerely do wish you all the best and that you have some great quality time with family and friends.

so if the hydrogen project is being shut down that means no H2 right?

patiently waiting on Komodo this comes as shocking news but I hope he gets his health in order. onward and upward
 
Enjoy the retirement, may it be long and fully enjoyed. It's been a blast to have shared a part of the journey. Looking forward to seeing the future unfold.
 
Thanks for a sharing Jarred. I grew up remembering Oakley being the elite status symbol of sunglasses and have been a proud Raven owner the last three years. Never got a chance to see one of those Hydrogen screens but it certainly has pushed that tech ahead. What a cool story - I plan to read up more on how he started his career but he certainly exemplified how one man can pursue his passions even in very different forms. People like that don’t come around everyday!
 
Well I won't view this as a sad note, but more of a celebration of your efforts Jim.

Many here make a living with those art wrapped gizmos, and I suspect for some the greater value those inventions have had is to empower them to create astounding work over the years.

I am very much in both categories and grateful for the effort, passion, and creativity. And you've filled out a few of those companies with similarly fueled folks for sure.

I have a good memory of the journeys of RED and Hydrogen. Much gets lost in the weeds these days, but I'm so very grateful for the rapid development and evolution of those efforts. Not to mention the industry changing trends that have emerged from those inventions. Very literally changing the game along the way several times.

Hopefully you won't be a stranger.

Too many memories over the years to really lay down. Many related to RED Days and NAB as well as chatting about technology trends. One still moment I remember fondly during the launch of DSMC2 going over the technology and in 2015 things were wildly different in the camera space, similarly to mid-2000s as well:

A big moment. Jim’s audacity and inventions have opened whole worlds to me. His active presence will be missed, but dammit if he hasn’t earned some down time. Sending good vibes your way Jim... RED’s in good hands, take in the good life and may good health follow you for many, many years.

Back in 2007 my fourth and final interview at RED was a one on one sit down with Jim. After we chatted for awhile about cameras, technology and all kinds of crazy stuff there was a defining moment and Jim said, "Well...you want to see the prototype of what will become the RED One?"

And my life changed for the better so much after that day.

Thank you for taking a chance on me Jim, thank you for all you've taught me and thank you for all of this amazing technology that I constantly use daily, which continues to change my life for the better...
 
Jim is yet another example that you don't need to be part of a club to be successful. May his health be better than new soon!

I hope that he starts to write his memoirs. That's a book I'd love to read. Please convey that to him, Jarred.

You have disrupted our lives in ways no one could have imagined and brought countless smiles along the way!

I hope the health issues will be a thing of the past, soon! So you can finally enjoy the life you deserve!

There's fond memories everywhere along the way, from X-Metal, the Thump, to the RED One and the Hydrogen One and all the Epic stops in between.

Jannard is an amazing man. I hope he'll consider writing an autobiography -- he's got some stories to tell.
