  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello all, and Jarred in particular,

Jarred:

you said in a previous post that you are waiting for tests about the new "4k Sandisk Cf card", and no news since then.

It seems like you've forgot us, we all are waiting for an answer and a solution, i've shoot a drama-documentary in London with Red 16Gb Cf cards (Red does offer no other solution), and it was "IMPOSSIBLE"!

You said that you are waiting for tests, what about now? Did these tests have been done? Did you contact Susan Park from Sandisk (The marketing director) who offers to give you a technical support and make these new Cf cards "Red compatible"?

Don't let us down Jarred, Red has his reputation thanks to his customers, don't let them down, they deserve more considerations..

Ps: Sorry for the mistakes on the Thread title, i was talking about Jarred and not Jim..

While I respect the "vigor" of you posting about this nearly everyday, doing so isn't going to make support for those CF cards (or any other brand) happen any sooner.

Red said they are working on it. If they do get other brand CF support in at a minimum a new firmware will need to be coded and released. Also, they don't really need any info from Sandisk to get these to work.

Give them a moment to test, bug hunt, and implement it and you'll get official word soon on if support is coming.

Purely out of curiosity, what about 16gb CF cards is "impossible"? I shot a feature on 8gb cards, and it was not an issue.

What about hard disks and Red Ram? Can it support that?

I have to agree with Phil, with the amount of innovation and testing, with additional R & D happening at RED all the time -- give them some time too get to everything on the list of to do's.

The fact that RED still supports a discontinued product is huge. Putting resources into a discontinued project and taking it away from new products is a waste of time to me. But guess what, they keep working on the Red One. Just keep in mind it is discontinued and maybe you can relax your rants a bit. They will get to it when they get to it...

I don't understand threads like this. When the BT red ones were sold everyone had an option of buying one with SSD or CF. When SSD ran out CF was left. Ok I get that. So didn't those buyers know what they were in for with the price and capabilities of RED media in the CF version at that time? It's like everyone wants a magic solutions AFTER they have purchased a camera that is claimed as end of life.

Wasn't it that the CF-models ran out first? Because I remember I would have bought a CF-version if there was one, but ended up with the SSD-version. Now I've bought a used CF-module, 5x 16gb cards, and 2x 320gb red drives. This media gets me through all kind of shooting, the Drives for tripod-situations, and CF:s for handheld/steadicam. And it was cheap too.

It's an issue with documentaries, or anywhere one time live events exceed recording time.

That's true. I had it backwards. They ran out of the CF one's first.

I have a BT R1 with SSD, but for now i never used/bought them, since the maximum data transfer you need @RC42 is around 42MBPS. I woul say: a slower and cheaper SSD tailored for R1 (actual 48GB SSD is 2-3 faster than RC42) would sell a lot, since people that bought BT R1 does not have the budget to spend $3000+ for a nice media package, when they had the R1 for $4000 (plus VAT).

So, SSD tailored for RC42, cheaper and R1 dedicated, who would buy them? I'm gonna open a thread on this ;-)

The fact remains that the R1 has the most media options available out of any of the Red cameras. I still use Red Drives when I need to. Long interviews for example work great with a Red drive. You could also keep an eye out for used RED RAM drive if you want solid state. Then you have CF module which works fine but you have to shoot more film style with more frequent mag changes. Limits to how much you can record at one time but for narrative 16GB cards worked fine. Had to use good CF card readers and have two in rotation if you were constantly copying due to heat issues but otherwise perfectly fine option for certain types of projects and your DIT/Data Manager is happy. And finally, RED made it possible to upgrade to SSD module which has been great. This replaces CF module (unless you want to swap the modules on set which I don't recommend). The problem is that these are now in short supply on the used market and some people can't afford the SSD media anyways.

So, I'd love to see even more options available from a selfish perspective, but I completely understand if RED decides not to go there when it comes to third party media as the camera is EOL'd and I'm sure pulling any resources away from other high priority tasks is probably not in their best interest. There should be a healthy amount of Red Drives out there. Are they riskier? Sure. But I have seen them go for as low as $200 for a 320GB drive. That's pretty good value especially if you are doing personal projects that don't have the budget for more expensive media options. Is it bulkier than an SSD or CF? Yes. But if you are on a budget, sometimes you have to put up with some less than ideal compromises. When you are on sticks, dolly, etc it's not really that big a deal in my opinion. Get a hold of the ET shock mounts and it will be lower profile, more stable.

I'm in favor of cheaper SSDs if RED can do it. I'd rather have more storage than I need as a safety net. But when it comes to the Red One I have to be realistic about how much more they want to do with that camera.

Steve, it's a win win situation. Imagine how many R1 with SSD module are out there, and people, as you rightly said, are buying used hard disks for $200, because their budget are not into SSD prices, and SSD media are fast as the Epic/Scarlet need them to be fast.

A slower and cheaper SSD for Red One could sell like water in the desert, and people@Red does not need to do research or developing new stuff, we just need a slower SSD (RC42 capable) with the Red logo on it.

I would caution you against projecting your own needs on to the majority. Personally, I am skeptical about this particular claim. When is the last time it paid to develop less capable technology in a rapidly moving industry?

Hey, no harm in asking! Personally I would buy lots of significantly cheaper but slower media (6K 30fps limited) even for Epic (Dragon), and buy two or three full speed mags for the occasions where higher framerates are needed.

It would also mean SSDs which don't pass high speed QC can be packaged as slower media and sold at a much lower price, rather than thrown away, which still makes more profit than simply throwing them away - win win?

I'm still on the "I think they should just pop out some new SSD modules so RED ONE owners can invest in current media" side of things though I'd give them thumbs up if they did move forward with high-capacity CF cards so long as it was RED approved or updated RED CF cards.

The big problem is not that the people who bout the BT reds knew or didnt know what they were getting into, it's the people like my self who bought two RED MX bodies for 25k RIGHT BEFORE the drop haha, sunk a lot into it, and did not have the capital to buy SSD and i'm stuck with CF until I can A: Afford a used SSD, B:try my luck with the ever failing Red Drives, or C: Red gives us Red one owners support by letting us use higher capacity CF cards. Spending $1000 on a CF card will be the most financially doable thing I can do, I cant afford $3500 for SSD. I'm a small guy in a big pond.

All that to be said, I have 12 16gig CF cards, I had 17 but 5 have failed on me over the years and just stopped working. If that keeps up, i'll be in it for sure.

Would love a good solution. However, I trust red, I love how they treat us, so I am glad to let them take their time, and I'm glad to know they are at least looking into the option for us.

Sort of begs the question of why you would buy two cameras when it leaves you short of funds to set up even one of them adequately.

Because he just wanted a backup body? And he had enough CF cards for his needs initially. I would bet there are plenty of Red cameras being used for non-narrative, non-film, low budget or personal work whose needs or priorities aren't the same as ours. They are just as worthy of support as any other Reduser.
