Titans of Industry are not without their critics. It has always been so, and will always be thus.

Jim Jannard forever changed the "film" industry. His name will be remembered in the likes of George Eastman. His contribution was that significant.

Now this being an internet forum, there will no doubt be posts by naysayers because they too can voice their opinion. But that is all it is, an opinion. Like the belly button, everybody has one.

I am glad that the timing worked out as it did. Jim had the idea right about the time I was searching for said camera. I only wished he hadn't named the sensor "Mysterium" as that gave me pause to wait and see if it was for real. I delayed after the first 100 slots were opened, then 1,000. Rats. But after it reopened, I knew time waits for no man. So I jumped with both feet. I didn't want to miss the party that I knew was coming. And boy did it.

These past six years since I put down my initial $1,000 deposit so I could wait a year to get my original R1 #2658 have been quite a wonderful ride. I now have the finest camera in the world and the opportunity to make it even better with an upgrade to Dragon. But for now, I'm holding off. This Epic camera I now have, #503 is so good, I'm in no rush. But thanks to Jim and his vision, I can simply upgrade it when I choose. Nice.

This being a public forum, I cannot expound on the generosity of Jim towards my family. But I will say this, the man has brought tears to my eyes with his kindness. For no other reason than simply being a decent and honorable man, he went out of his way to be gracious and I will always be appreciative.

Jim, you have accomplished so much in your life first with Oakley and now with RED, it would be impossible without detractors, those envious ones who cannot stand to see another succeed, let alone twice, and with moxie and the courage of his convictions. That really sends them over the edge!

Remember, it's not bragging if you can back it up.

Hope to see you around sometime. Thanks for everything.

Mark

Jannard and Red changed not only the industry, but for me personally opened up and enabled me to become part of the industry I, in my early days only hoped to be a part of. It changed my life.

Thank you Jim and everyone else involved in this cinematic revolution!

Can't agree more.... It feels so sad to see him go, especially for those reasons.

Long time haa pasted since last I posted here...

Back in 2004 my life changed, I came across a big entrepreneurial failure even though what I did back then today is a common practice in studio isocam recordings from Thomson to EVS allover the world (is patented and used with license by Toolsonair and Softron media)… The vision mixer tally to editing timeline transfer or Directors cut workflow…

It was hard for me coz a dream to automate and streamline studio production couldn’t be realized by me… Lack of funds, Greek investors’ stupid mentality, all played a role…

I changed carrier, closed the business and turned to film industry, having in my hart the understanding that very soon all, will be tapeless…

One day back in 2006, I came across RED, and then I saw a rock-star style guy that wanted to change the industry.

Firstly I was criticizing the project a lot, but not to devalue, instead to advice…

While the time went by I realized that the project was serious and Jim was a real entrepreneur and not a rock-start character with money.

With Epic Jim, for my standards, achieved his goals… He finally made it happen.

Jim is a genuine transformational entrepreneur, what he did change the course of Cinematography’s History.

If he wasn’t him, I don’t think that today we would had 4K digital cinematography cameras with cinematic, depth of field, behavior and looks…

Jim changed the world in a magnitude a tad less than Steve Jobs with iPhone…

For me Jim, as an entrepreneur to a fellow entrepreneur, I would say if it’s not a business or a health decision, don’t step down.

Pursue your dreams and let us, see you reaching the skies…

Jim, thank you from my hart, for your contribution in modern Cinematography.

Hope one day I will met you in person. :-)

As Head (of the) State of Digital Cinema, Jim Jannard commands a 21 gun salute.

Well said, Mark. Funny, your camera & our original Red One were within 10 serial numbers. By the way, I know it's more exciting for people to say "I was in super early!" but I am happy to say I made a good business decision...waiting to see if the camera would be reality...and only then put down my money. Good business sense shouldn't be knocked...you didn't wait too long, nor did I.

My life didn't change over purchasing a camera. But I sure salute Mr. Jannard for shaking up the industry in a big way and letting me spend a lot of money and feel GOOD about it, rather than the feeling I got when spending money on other products by other companies. We love our cameras (2 Epics now) and I think RED has done amazing things. I'm still shocked they haven't been featured in Time or something...titled "A New Way of Doing Business" or something like that. The innovation they've started has been equally in their business practices & marketing (fan-based marketing) as it has been in their cameras.

Onward.

Kevin
