  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim comes into the 3D workshop !

I thought it was like this..

Epic-M - Preproduction Machined Built
Epic-X for stage 2 and 3 with higher redcode rates
Epic S35 - Everyone else
Epic L- old scarlet s35

Am I Wrong?

I hate to say this but this looks sort of like Small, Medium, Large, Xtra large to me.

No offense meant to anyone! I need my morning coffee....! :seeya:

Much closer to $12K.

Jim

So I'm just trying to remmeber. The Scarlet used to be $2750 and then got a $1k price bump for HDRx™™ capability. (36%)

Scarlet s35 in the same time frame started at $7k so by that metric it would be ~$10k. Is the Epic-S going to have SSDs standard like the Epic-X? If so another $1.5k so about $11.5k-12.5k perhaps? + Red might have to bump the specs a bit more than they did with Scarlet which could already shoot 120fps.

Hopefully that's how it shakes out and puts the Monstro-S on the same footing. 10k * 1.4 + 1.5 = ~15.5k-17.5k

You'll find a lot of lingering references to Epic-L/Lite/Light on the forum because Jim initially toyed with that name for the "camera formerly known as Scarlet S35." Along the way he changed the name of that camera to Epic-S. I believe it was to denote either "Standard" or a reference to "Scarlet" as its heritage. So, the name Epic-L/Lite/Light is no longer. Long live the Epic-S! (Unless or until there is another name change.) :eek6:

"Much closer to 12k" can only mean a 12+ price, unfortunately...

what about FF35??

??

FF35 will rock for a lot of things, but it will require more expertise (and/or perhaps enhanced electronics to assist nailing it) to focus when you want to shoot a short stop. One huge improvement in that respect is the greater signal to noise ratio of the MX (plus more evolved processing toolsets, more usable chroma in the lower exposure areas of the frame, etc) that will make it viable to shoot more of the time F4 and up where depth of field is still slender but not razor thin. Ask somebody whose been pulling on five-dee shows - they always seem to have pocketful of TUMs antacid - just sayin' :sarcasm:

Cheers - #19

significant change since that time is the expanded dynamic range, which a huge number of people wanted for the 2/3 chip and bigger chip cameras. that's adding extra costs

agreed on the focus issues Blair. big time. I don't think that people realize the numerous situations in which you will not be able to maintain sharp focus on the ff and larger bodies.

Much closer to $12K.

So do I get a Prize if I'm closest? :-)

December 2nd From the "What's your guess for Epic-L?" thread:

"5k 30fps. $12,000 basic kit with ssd module and 2.5"LCD. Batteries and storage extra. Other specs as yours (OP: $14K 5K 1-48fps, 3k 1-120 fps, HDRx™™, HDRe, Side SSD.)

Seems to me this undercuts F3 slightly and not much more than similar config scarlet S35 with the $1000 HDRx™™™™™™™ bump. Maybe a discount package with 17-50 zoom.

If it were me I would add a 3.5kish 4/3 crop mode as well. Get that alexa predebayered spec and take on the AF100 as well. Both specs sort of arbitrary/meaningless in reality but good for head to head sales/marketing purposes."

If confirmed, more 50% or the extra 50% premium is too much in my opinion.

Well, it's still 20% of what it could easily cost for us. I'm just grateful that it's worlds ahead of what the "competition" is offering...

Even if it's out of range to purchase, rental rates are gonna be stellar for the results.
