  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Cameron buys...

So, Jim , this means nobody else will get Epic-m's anymore?
I thought you would continue making them as long as you saw any benefits in it, before x is released on larger scale?

at least this would have made some people happy who are more independant shooters and are really waiting and wanting to get one.

Steven this is not directed at you, but since you mentioned, (others did too) I take this opportunity to say this...

Yeah easy to say coming from some one that already has 2 EPIC M cameras, but we actually need over one Dozen of them and need them like last year!!

However I would have very much agreed to also delay taken delivery of the second EPIC M, if needed so that Jim Cameron could have his 50 EPIC M cameras.

Do you have just but a n idea what this really means??

Beside the fact that not Jim or no one else said anything about making Jim's cameras before any one else get theirs, and or stopping
shipping other EPIC M cameras to Redusers and or other new to be Redusers.

Would you had preferred that Jim decided that we got the cameras first, adn have them while NO main stream Director of Major Movie was shot on it?
This let me tell you would have helped no one, as you would get no more jobs then you are getting now with the Red ONe, but thanks to the Huge names and just about every single biggest 3D movie been made is getting shot on the 2-00+ EPIC M cameras out there, we now, EPIC owners have a tool that it is highly regarded in the industry like no other camera before it!!

Oh hi KETCH, so you mean that you have the same EPIC M cameras that Spiderman 4 is been shot on?
And that Peter Jackson is shooting the HALF BILLION Duology (is this even a word? Not sure he he) "The Hobbits"?
Oh and that James Cameron's AVATR 3 and 3 will be shot on?

This to me is worth the wait in GOLD!!

Just saying, but it seems that some times we are never happy, this is a HUGE announcement for RED and for us, lets be happy for the man and his TEAm, they are doing incredible things!!

Totally agree 100%

I have to say that personally, I would have been very happy if Jim had posted this announcement, and then closed the thread so that no one could reply.

Lots and lots of reading.. But all the important info was in Post #1.

Jay

PS And yes.. I am aware I just added to the noise.. What can you do? :)

congrats Jim ... you and the Bomb Squad did a great job.
After the NAB where ARRI annouced the Alexa "M" specialy designed for 3D and endosed by PACE ... Is there any "cause and effect" with the curious story i heard with Arri Raw troubles Darius Khondji had on the last Michael Haneke movie shooting ?

Grats! Guess in a few years all that's left in the high end film is RED....

That's nice, now he can shoot 25 3-D scenes at the same time, I guess that way you can make a few avatars each year ^^

So...guess that's pretty much a sign....the rest of the industry needs to pick up the game, if Cameron can put money down for 50, clearly his confident on what RED offers...
And there was all that talk of him never going to come towards the RED side of life...

This is awesome news...but 50 is a heck of a lot of churning you guys have to do! All those M orders...wow...wonder how long the queue is now

All true, Jay... but I'm sure you've noticed that closed threads usually breed more threads about the closed thread. By leaving a thread open, at least our (mine, yours, everyone else's) noise is contained in one big frayed thread.:emote_popcorn:

It's weird since Cameron Pace Group just signed with Arri to build some stuff around Alexa-M. But their joint-venture is about developping 3D rigs and technology so why not working with both camera (Epic M and Alexa M) ?

Looking forward to the official announcement.

No, this just means that if you make several of the highest-grossing film of all time, you get preferential treatment. I just hope it doesn't suck up all the Bomb EVF's being made, but if it does, that's Red's perogatilve. Meanwhile, it's going to get easier to sell Red to producers, and that's great news for all of us.

I'm kinda wondering if this won't actually speed up the waiting list. Now that RED has a commitment for 50 more cameras, they can buy larger lots of the scarce and expensive supplies and divert more manpower to the M camera's assembly line. Adding weight to the order queue may actually make things faster.

RED has all my money, thus I am unable to speculate on Gold futures. Therefore, I speculate here for free.

RAWSOME NEWS!

I'm curious why these big productions need 30 and 50 cameras. Does anyone shoot more than 2-3 cameras at a time on a feature? Even 3D thats 4 to 6 cameras with say 1 back up each.

What am I missing here. Why does PJ need 30 and he needs 50 cameras? How many were used on Avatar? Anybody know?

Asking for purely technical reasons. Thats a lot of 3D rigs from ET or 3-Ality if they harness them all... but who shoots with 15 to 25 3D rigs?
Several on set and VFX have their own for each stage creating BG plates?

Tim, just guessing here, but putting myself in his shoes I would be working on multiple movies at once. Avatar 2 and 3 (why not shoot them at the same time?) could be shot without so much hands-on as the original because the team that shot it know how. In the meantime, other movies could be done at the same time with assistant directors feeding their setups and footage (in 3D no less) back to HQ so Cameron could approve or make corrections as he sees fit. But as I said in a previous post...

RED has all my money so I am unable to speculate in the gold market. Therefore, I speculate here for free.

What makes you think his new company is only doing one movie?

Canon has cameras, as does Arri, the Alexa and the new Alexa M are stunningly fatastic products, but why, for the love of GOD!! Even try to compare them to EPIC!!

you guys have made a truly INSANELY FANTASTIC piece of machinery that is like nothing I ever used!!

Ha Ha, Ketch, your unreserved passion for Red and Epic is quite infectious, and spills over with every post you make. It makes me smile, it informs, and I'm glad you were the one to do the Coast to Coast Epic tour.

To say I'm looking forward to working with Epic would be an epic understatement, thanks to people like you, industry movers and shakers like Cameron's 50, FXPHD's Epic preview course, and of course to the Red team for making the sucker.

Not read the posts that obviously aren't going to contain any additional informations and then not post about how many posts there are that don't contain any additional information? :confused5:

Well, Peter Jackson does, especially for big scenes. Plus, as you mentioned, there is second (and often third) unit, as well as required backup bodies (any camera can have problems, usually at the least opportune time). As for Jim Cameron, not all of these bodies would likely be for his own particular needs. Jim is involved with both his brother and Vince Pace in a manufacturing company that develops and ultimately will market 3D rigs as well as other accessories. He also produces projects other than the pictures he directs, and the partnership with Vince is also involved in live 3D production (think concerts and sports events), much like 3ality. These type of productions require a LOT of camera bodies. Think of anything he's buying as a "studio" purchase rather than a purchase for a specific production and it will make a lot more sense.
