  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Cameron buys...

just curious to know why 30 and 50 cams, why so many, are they shooting with 7-8 units simultanously or what?

On a big action scene try more like 12-15 rigs at once. You also want the ability to split off into tandem units. 3-4 rigs a unit with back ups. On something of grand scale and with 3d rigs it is also not unthinkable to have two rigs per shooting team. As in, you have one rig with the zooms on it that you are working with right now for the shot. There are other Ac's/techs prepping another rig with the primes for the next shot and you leap frog from rig to rig.

Bizarre thought... What if you used Epic 3D rigs in a mo-cap situation? Build your models and shoot textures at the same time...

Great news - I thought the Arri announcement meant Cameron had made up his mind, but he's obviously more forward thinking than I gave him credit for. Maybe there's hope that Deakins will rethink his seemingly militant anti-Red position... this many major directors (and all the rest of us who have been singing Red's praises since R1) can't be wrong!

To get back to the original title, I gulped 'cause I thought it might be Jim Cameron buys ... RED... :)

Then you still have absolutely no idea what Jim (Jannard) that is, is all about, and what RED really means to him... and us... RED for sale? NOT A CHANCE!! (fortunately for all of us)

I would speculate that Cameron believes that 3D is the way forward for filmmaking, but only if it becomes a widely used technique in every sphere of filmmaking from the biggest feature films to television dramas.

So he's pushing for 3D adoption from all major camera manufacturers and film/programme makers.

Not sure really why everything has always to be derailed on here...

SERIOUSLY!!

Come guys, why does it always has to be this way, is almost tiring to read all the time, this is a RED FORUM, of course every one here is BIAS to RED products,
otherwise they would be at the Canon or Arri forum!!

I love Canon, been Photographing with their cameras for over 20 years!!

I love Arri, they have been making some of the best Film and now the best Cine/Video Digital cameras,
in cooperation with Zeiss, they have made the absolute BEST Cine Glass the world has ever seen, "The Master Primes" of course.

Canon has cameras, as does Arri, the Alexa and the new Alexa M are stunningly fatastic products, but why, for the love of GOD!! Even try to compare them to EPIC!!

Is like photographers that disscuss with me comparison of a 7D with a Hasselblad Medium Format Sensor @ 65MP, and argue that the images look the same, HA HA HA... PLEASE...

Alexa is a great camera, and so is every other camera out there, just each is different to its technological advancement and what they offer, each is meant for a purpose...

NONE is meant to compete with EPIC, why?? Because they have absolute no standing GROUND to do so... ;)

Story telling has always been my only goal and dream in life since childhood, the equipment that we use, does indeed shape how we do and tell this stories,
but should always be an implementation of this tools, not anything else but.

HAPPY SHOOTING!!

Oh... and once again... CONGRATS JIM and TEAM for yet and other GIANT win on this ever TUFF Hollywood world, well deserved,
as you guys have made a truly INSANELY FANTASTIC piece of machinery that is like nothing I ever used!!

Great post. I agree, this is the news I was hoping for since Epics became hot for 3D shooting. And not because it "validates" us
Redusers ... a big reason is that whatever people want to say about Jim Cameron, I guarantee he'll push the Epic to it's limits and
use it (in combination with a lot of CG) to create an overall film that's very, very visually impressive -- to say the least.

And given all the speculation that Avatar 2 could be largely "underwater" I'm even more excited to see if/how Cameron incorporates
the underwater 3D rigs that are in development now.

Exciting times ...

Anthony

Needless to say I am stunned, though in hindsight expected.

I guess good ol' Jim C. Decided that 1080p wasn't good enough for him after all :)

Can't wait too see what tricks he can turn with Epic!

I hope this leads to the first Oscar "win" for cinematography with a RED camera. Congratulations Mr. Jannard.

NO, NEVER, Not in a million years!
Jim (our Jim) that's excellent news, Happy RED Easter!

Because:

A) Jane Campion is known for testing the limits of technology and film making with every fim she does?

B) More people see a Jane Campion film than a James Cameron film

C) Jane Campion influences pop culture on a massive scale on a regular basis

D) None of the above

Kris, Really? One oscar, 2 Palmes d'Or and a César among others... Come on man!

I'll modify my original post... all EPIC-Ms.

Jim

So, Jim , this means nobody else will get Epic-m's anymore?
I thought you would continue making them as long as you saw any benefits in it, before x is released on larger scale?

at least this would have made some people happy who are more independant shooters and are really waiting and wanting to get one.

Anyway, back on topic, this is amazing news for us as well. It's amazing marketing and business for Jim Jay, and a great reputation and credibility boost for all users. In the past couple of years, it's not been always fun at parties, or at rental houses, to mention you owned a Red I can tell you! That'll shut up a few annoying gits around me! :D

I feel like a guy who got an Aston Martin before it was in the James Bond movies...
