  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim any chance Red will Resurrect the 3K Scarlet ?

Ray. a better question to ask is, "Will the little Black Magic camera come out with a model to compete with Scarlet? Not the other way around. Or ask, "Will Red come out with a camera that competes with Phantom frame rates?" (Jarred has already said if you want 1000 fps, buy a Phantom, so the answer to that is also probably no.

I agree. My thinking is this. Why would RED want to compete with BM while the others are trying to catch up to and compete with RED. It does seem bassackwards for RED to make a 3K camera for the lesser jobs. I understand the want. I wanted a fixed lens too. But I get the business model. Never look back, always ahead!

And the important part; the money Blackmagic is making on the back of DSLR and Sony sales could have been Red's !

I think you are assuming that RED's only goal is to make money. As they have repeatedly shown by offering discounted upgrades, free software, and new functions enabled through firmware updates...they are not in this just for the money...they are driven by a much larger need...clearly...to change how Hollywood thinks about filmmaking, change conceptions, and drag the old guard into the 21st century...kicking and screaming if they have to. If it was about money, the Epic would cost $75k, which it could easily do. It outperforms the Alexa in almost every way and yet costs 1/2 as much.

Instead, IMHO, I think RED is more concerned about actually having a legacy to leave...by steering Hollywood's clumsy transition from ANALOG to DIGITAL...by paving the way, blazing if they have to, into dark corners and new directions that other companies never could because they were driven only by profit.

Indeed...RED's ability to look beyond the bottom line has routinely kept them several steps ahead of their competition...

And this majestic need to change Hollywood is...I don't think...compatible with competing to make an affordable RAW camcorder.

They have bigger fish to fry.

By the way, if it weren't for the fact RED has twisted the market into a new quality and price standard, BM would be playing the overpricing games of yesteryears along with every other camera companies, charging you anywhere from $6k to $20K for a 2k camera.

Thanks Dave ! I agree it's pretty straightforward but this was before the Blackmagic Camera was released. Not saying your wrong, this may still be the case.
But IMO the Blackmagic camera has changed things again.
Who knows ? thats why I posted.
Ray

The Blackmagic Camera has changed things at a certain price point and market RED has no interest in.

Red is a premium branded professional digital cinema camera manufacture,I don't think they are going to consumer level. In industry who ever use Red cameras people think they are the high end professionals.so each and every business there have marketing strategy and position.Just look at the Toyota ,there cars are ordinary car.but the same company make luxury premium models with different name and logo that call Lexus.so I have a request for to Red.If Red planing to go for consumer level and price range please go with different name and logo.then company can make more money and market.then please maintain Red as it is..................
