  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

January 2016 update

New upgrades arriving always feel like Christmas. :-D Proud MG Weapon #00079 owner here. Can't wait for the cable-less WC plate to get here to work with the Red Base expander nicely without the messy power cable in the way.
Congrats Sam!! looks Awesome.

Awesome!
What battery mount do you have on there? Looks like a v-lock, but with a lemo plug...

From Epic to Weapon not much anymore... we mostly need the cameras to be functional for the trade in so when I donate them to schools or sell them to our institutional / military customers they work as they would expect them to. If we took back janky cameras with pieces broken the value would go way down and your upgrade prices would go way up :)

Wait, so you all aren't using any pieces off our Epics for the Weapons. For some reason I thought you or Brent had said you all were using the sensors out of our old cameras for the new cameras. That's why it was truly and "upgrade" and not just a send in your old camera and get a new. Or did I totally just misunderstand that?

Looks like the Wooden Camera easy back with one of their cabled battery plates on it.

That's correct. It's the WC Weapon Quickback with a cabled IDX V-mount battery plate. The cabled plate is temporary until I have the cable-less upgrade for the WC quickback come in. IDX batteries go on super easy, but I noticed that my V-mount Dynacores wont fit on straight up without taking the quickback off first and screwing it back on. Once I have the WC top plate though the Dynacores will go on just as easily as the IDX batteries without having to remove anything.

I will be using the word 'janky' in our production meetings next week. Thanks Jarred.

I often tell my operator to make something look artfully janky.

Might have to pick a new word if that's copyrighted!

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems Jarred's trademark is for Janky as a business that rates movies, TV, music, video and video games.

Since, like motion pictures, online content isn't subject to any mandatory MPAA CARA ratings AFAIK, this could become a one-stop guide for ratings for all online content.

However, I was told in another thread where I suggested a need for an online Indie movie Acadamy awards organization that it is impossible to do such a thing. '-)... ostensibly because it is hard and hard is just, you know... hard to do.

Doesn't matter I abandoned the trademark anyways :)

Hi Chris, It's your PL mount.

The good news is that I got notified of my weapon being done two days after I got my mount shipped. You are close my friend

Hi Stephen, Have your received your weapon yet?

- I sent my Epic M Dragon with PL mount to red on Jan.15
- Red sent my PL mount back on Jan. 22
- My camera passed inspection on Feb.8 but needed no repairs
- Once my camera passed inspection I had the full balance wired to Red in 3 days.
- My Rep told me on Friday that a piece is holding up my order that is critical for operation. .. the web site shows the Woven Weapon in stock.

Dose this length of time (40 days and counting) sound normal ?

Richard

Hi Richard,

On balance this sounds longer than I would expect, but the information about when something is sent in as opposed to received by RED makes this difficult to comment on.

I'll provide you my timeline but before I do I want to provide some context.

I had a chance to see the upgrade line a couple of years ago when they were doing Epic MX to Dragon, and it was a real eye opener. I'd just never really thought through how much more complex upgrading an existing camera is compared to building a new camera. They intake the new camera, take a zillion pictures of it, log all the component parts, run an astonishing array of test to determine full functionality, physically disassemble to component parts, and then rebuild, retest, burn in, and I'm sure I'm missing something. Further all the constituent upgrade parts have to be available on the right part of the line on the right day etc.

I know there isn't a direct comparison, but RED is doing the same level of inspection of inbound hardware, and in my case media. And they are still constrained by one set of inventory to balance against building new cameras, and a very unpredictable influx of cameras for upgrade. It's just a much harder problem than I realized until I saw it first hand.

As to my timeline for Weapon upgrade, they turned me around super fast so far, faster than my EpicM Mx to Dragon upgrade. I don't have my camera yet, but so far all is super good. My camera and mount were received by RED Monday 2/22/16 early morning. I got notified of a 3lb package being delivered this week and I was totally WTF, I have no idea what this is, and still didn't after digging through my order history. The PL mount mystery package showed up 2/25, and I got called late Friday 2/26 from my Bomb Squad Rep saying that my Weapon was completed, and that I needed to call him about OLPF choices and REDArmor.

We got that sorted Friday (One of the crew was all "where do you think your going" when I stepped away but when I explained why he was "It's all good" :) So my weapon is done, it looks like it's going to take a couple of days for the media tests to complete and the credit to hit my account. So I'm on hold for a day or two as the media trade in credit (THANKS JARRED!) is covering the last of my upgrade balance.

With shipping time I expect the camera to be in my hands by Friday 3/4. So faster than their targeted turn around time.

I'll post when it arrives.

Okay, this doesn't make sense to me. My Epic-X got to RED on the 19th and it took until 25th to let me know that everything is good with the camera. That's the last I've heard from RED. No contact from bomb rep about payment for the upgrade. Yet, yours get there a day later and is going out the door quicker. Not understanding the priority situation when one camera comes in later than the other, but gets done sooner even though there are no issues with the camera that came in earlier. If someone sends in an Epic-M do they get to jump line?

Matt, I have no idea. There are just so many variables. For example my camera was still under warranty, does that allow skipping some level of testing? and it is an M with faster processing does that mean it tests out faster? And I did pay a lot more for the M and have a pretty early number does that matter? Did my bomb squad rep have fewer calls to make Friday. (I mentioned I got called quite late in the day). I already had a running dialog because of the media trade in situation, so the money thing is already buttoned up for me, and remember my camera hasn't actually shipped yet.

We are right back to I have no idea. As long as RED turns the camera's around close to targeted turn around time, they've done their job and done well by us.

The difference between arrival at Red sometime on Friday, and early Monday morning is negligible, not enough that I would be worried.

Hang in there, Christmas is coming soon :)
