It's not Piracy they're against, it's distribution for Independents they fear!

Good one! :-)

We all signed a deal with the devil a long time ago. Now we're locked in. Now we have to try and sort things out, but we're so entangled in it, the sorting out part is difficult. We can't even get off the grid, even if we want to. Who's running the country? Corporations or politicians? I'd say it's corporate politicians. And I'm an optimist. My worldview has been so tarnished at this point that I don't trust anyone anymore. I see people going into congress to make a career of it, rather than making an impact in a shorter period of time. I see so much corporate greed infesting Washington. Hollywood, yes the Hollywood that I work for sometimes ,is desperate to control piracy yet I have no idea if they have any idea on how to actually fix it. I feel like we're all swimming in a murky swamp where you really can't see what's in the water but you just sense it's bad and yet there's really nowhere else to go, so you make the best of it until whatever it is that's living in there with you decides to eat you one day. As a society, we can't even solve hunger. We have many people that go without food in this country, admittedly some of them because of their own doing, yet we have so many Wal-Marts lined with food. The problem isn't that there is hungry people, it's the why.

Why do people steal? Why does the government cheat and steal? Why do our relatives (good people) download movies illegally, steal music? Why do we vote the same people into office year after year? Why do people support a political party when they don't even agree with the party's positions? Why, why, why, why? There are many issues like this that we just can't seem to solve the why part of it. And therefore, we can't seem to fix it.

The optimist in me says the US Government must be doing something right because on average, Americans live a pretty good life compared to other parts of the world. The pessimist in me asks, at what cost? When you're in the murky swamp, it's only at that moment that you get eaten that you realize that all you had been doing was biding your time. The danger was always there.

You've got my vote, Steve.

If you think that somehow it's now different, that "the people" are going to somehow rise up and claim power, you need to look at history, especially economic and business history.

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

I strongly disagree Mike. The social climate is very different now. The people are awakening.
You're just jaded, brother. No need to be. This discussion is happening everywhere at the moment.

What deal are you talking about?
I'd argue that the "pretty good life" you're talking about most Americans having is eroding rapidly. Also, many would say it was begotten on the backs and blood of other parts of the world.

And from the honest sweat and toil of their forefathers. Gained freedoms much squandered and abused.

You forgot to look at what my pessimistic side said - At what cost?

As far as the deal we signed, that's the one where many of us are willing to put up with air pollution, privacy issues (yes I'm talking to you Google and Facebook), being tied to credit cards/credit agencies, contaminated food, dirty politics, corporate greed, etc. as long as we have half as chance at living normal, comfortable lives where we have a nice house/apartment/condo, a TV, a computer, a decent car, raise children. You know, the American Dream.

We should probably watch what we say about the government. After all, it's probably about 80 percent of the population that works for them. ;-)

But seriously, the one good thing I can say about government is... it beats anarchy.

Jack Valenti (Former head of the MPAA) Quotes
We are facing a very new and a very troubling assault on our fiscal security, on our very economic life and we are facing it from a thing called the video cassette recorder and its necessary companion called the blank tape. And it is like a great tidal wave just off the shore. This video cassette recorder and the blank tape threaten profoundly the life-sustaining protection, I guess you would call it, on which copyright owners depend, on which film people depend, on which television people depend and it is called copyright.
I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone.

Mike, could you refresh my memory on the history of our national origins?

I could be totally wrong, but all of my senses are informing me that we're already in the progress of radical transformation within our culture and socio-economic/political system, it only needs time to evolve at this point. And time will tell, but i sincerely believe that the people will rise up and re-claim power. I'm not convinced it will be very physical or violent, but we're certainly headed into a revolution of sorts. According to the testimony of history, there are clear similarities and indicators of a full reformation or otherwise collapse at hand - no world power lasts indefinitely, ever. Restore, Reform, or Restart. Or you could Relocate. Take to the skies! ;)

Piracy Crusading is a horrible scapegoat for what is really just plain lack of vision and resistance to positive cultural growth. Effort would be better spent providing high quality, reliable service to suit the market demand. Simple stuff, good business.

It's time the recording and entertainment industries stop acting like spoiled crybabies and adjust their business model to modern times.

I don't really think this is an option. They wouldn't know how. Most people in the power positions got their by obsequious servitude and "connections". I don't think that the people in charge of the music and film industries would really know how to implement a new system. Their Dad's, Uncles, Spouses, ect. got them the "in" that they never should have had in the first place... and they have slept and "friend-ed" their way up to the top from their. Their careers have been nothing but one "that's just how it's done" after another. I don't think the phrase "what else can we try that people may like this year?" has ever been mutter in all of hollywood's existence. It's more like "what made money last year? Let's make it again." There is absolutely no innovation or foresight anymore and the cost of failure is too high because of all the people sucking the feeding tube of the system they shouldn't be a part of in the first place.

Oh, also, scapegoat-ism. People love the power-position paychecks, but nobody likes making changes due to the possibility of failure and being ostracized. That's why the phrase "that's just how it's works" is so popular in hollywood. When a person fails or makes a mistake, it's nice to have a set of rules "you had to fallow" to blame it on. And the best part is... that nobody will call you out on it, because they want to use it as a scapegoat as well.

So, basically, why is the entertainment industry just throwing money at the government to pass legislature instead of adapting? Because they can't. They're just not the right people for the job. ...yet they have it anyways. If you could find a way to end all of the nepotism, "connections", and favoritism... then the industry would almost be perfect. The right people would be in the right positions because of their ideas and insight, and not just because they "climbed the ladder". The system would adapt naturally instead of requiring total failure before anything actually happens.

This is a very important discussion, indeed. It would be ironic that "the land of the free" would be in the forefront of internet dictatorship... As a content creator I don't believe at all in this bill. I hope you guys can prevent it. I'm sure if its approved in the US it will spread immediately to the rest of the world. Its really a step backwards in our Global society. In fact, the Internet and the way it is, with its current "free" nature- which has its downsides that are by far are surpassed by the good side- are the single biggest advancement in our XX/XXI century. It has opened doors of knowledge and sharing between the world breaking the boundaries of time and space. With the internet under an official, empowered "Big Brother", this will be a very, very big blow to this "world community". A really big step back.

I can see that's coming sort of "Online 1984" or simply end of the Internet.

Years ago Apple did nicely to save music from online piracy

but today there is a sort of big struggle about that who will do the same with the movies.

Google? But don't make me laugh!

They want to gain a dominance, but most Hollywood Studios don't like Google to be a mayor ruler.

Since the Internet, we've now entered an entitlement age, where theft is a lot easier and you're a lot less likely to get caught because you're not in a store, getting caught by a guard, an employee, or a security camera. But make no mistake, there's very little difference between shoplifting a box of golf balls at your local Sports Authority and downloading Torrents of currently released movies. Both are theft, plain and simple.

I think this is a massive oversimplification...

First of all, I'm not trying to say it's not wrong to download movies and things without being licensed to do so - because it is wrong. But calling it stealing is just in no way correct - there is no legal system in the world that classifies copyright infringement as theft, because they are very different things - theft is a very concrete concept where a person is deprived of a physical object of some value, which has an easily quantifiable loss. But with copyright infringement, the loss is extremely abstract and essentially impossible to quantify. Say somebody downloads a copy of a movie and watches it once, then disposes of the copy. The company who made the movie hasn't had a physical loss - their bank balance isn't any lower, nothing is missing from their office etc., but they may have lost a $12 movie ticket sale, or a $29 DVD purchase, or a $5 purchase when it was in the bargain bin, or a $2.99 iTunes rental, or perhaps the person just would have watched it at the house of a friend who already owns a copy. Or not watched it at all.

As I said, I'm not saying that makes downloading movies OK, but calling it theft is simply incorrect and to equate it morally with theft is questionable - because apart from the fact that somebody doesn't incur a physical loss, it isn't possible to say whether it is the same as taking a $29 DVD or watching their friend's DVD...

Best solution - find a way to give them what they want and to make them pay for it.
