Making a new thread as I feel this is important to see.

This evening I'd like to share the final color grade and cinema finish on "It's Just Paint".

titleCard.jpg

I'll keep it short and sweet as there is so much info in this thread.

This grade is very different from the first light pass I released last week. It's also a bit different than what I've posted recently with the sort of grainy/sharp "aesthetically inclined" finish. This is a proper cinema grade with no grain applied. This is how I'd typically delivery this footage. It's a bit less contrasty and I relaxed a bit on the print emulation at the end. Additionally the sharpening and scaling was handled differently this time around. This is merely a very, very light sharpen at 6K and scaled to the UHD 4K release.

****edit. I did some experiments with UHD4K uploads to Youtube. While still compressed, this actually doesn't look too bad in UHD4K. Click "Original" for the UHD4K version. This was the ProRes 4K 422 file:

Because of the re-compression that comes with placing content on sites like Vimeo and Youtube I've decided to release a 1080p Apple ProRes 422 version. The lower bit rate of most streaming sites is real far off from what this material looks like projected in a theater.

If you'd like to see a higher quality 3.8GB 1080p ProRes 422 version:

Also, if you'd like to see some of the selected stills from this final grade:

Or for those of you who just want to download the UHD4K resolution versions of those stills:

And remember, if you'd like to see some of my experiments and play with the Dragon 6K WS .R3D files, they can be found here:

For those who have a REDRAY, I'll be distributing a UHD4K .RED encoded versions of this material to a select group of folks as well.

I hope you guys enjoy. It's been a real pleasure bringing this material to life from shoot to finish.

I really can't wait to get my hands on Dragon again. This I think shows you why.

Cheers everybody. And please do download that ProRes version. It shows so much more.

like this grade and finish Phil.

Thank you. You should see it projected in 4K. It's beautiful!

Looking great Phil... Even so this is a better, I guess more proper final finish to some extent, I must admit that I do love super contrasty color grades, when there is the info to bring it on... And in this footage there sure is plenty of that... ;)

Thanks Ketch. Overall I tend to handle digital color work much like painting. I rarely use pure white or black, even when I go super contrasty I'll wrangle the highs and lows back into the picture as much as possible. However, one of the cool things about not going too contrasty here is that on the close up where I rack focus on the eyes around 2:48 you can actually see an image in her pupil for a split second of her reflection in the mirror. So cool.

You don't have to right click. Just click it like any other link and it will load into a new webpage with your download link.

Shooting and working on this piece has certainly got me "jonesing" for Dragon pretty hard. The dynamic range, color, and overall character of this sensor is a pretty big deal.

Love the grade, would be awesome to see it on the big screen at red studios hollywood

That would be nice. I've made a DCP package to run around the studios around here, but I'd love to toss it on the REDRAYs at RSH. They have all that UHD4K displays over there.

Thank you Luigi.

Yesterday I did a few tests with the UHD4K version and uploading to Youtube. I found one that doesn't look too bad. I've added it to the first post.
