  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ISO 4000...

Does anyone know if we would see the same kind of low light capabilities on the 2/3" Red sensors? My thinking is -- smaller sensor surface area, less photons hitting the sensor.

Each pixel is the same size, so for a 1:1 section of identical resolution, there should be no difference.

That said, a 5K image scaled to 3K [to match the 2/3" camera] will hide noise in the process.

Native sensitivity though? Should be identical. Just different size sensors cut from the same wafer.

The 2/3" sensor has smaller pixels than S35. And I wish you could cut different size sensors out of the same wafer... would sure save us a lot of development money.

Jim

Crap, I'm an idiot. I thought they were all 5.4mu. Sorry for misleading! I haven't been following development of the 2/3" cameras closely and made an assumption.

As for the wafer thing, certainly not in a literal sense. If only, eh?

Research ANd Development.

Remember REDAlert! started life as my little R&D app... When RA! became a RED public app, I needed another little private app to do image processing development in. So that's where FLUT was born and raised, and now it's leaving home to go out into the world.

Graeme

LOL! Great name for the apps while in development. :) You are really working some magic Mr. Nattress!

I think I remember 3.2 microns for the 2/3. Could be 4 something though...
Hopefully similar sensitivity...

I will not curse in excitement anymore.

What do you (*everyone) estimate we'll get for 2k theatrical projection?

We don't know what the 85% dark version of Graeme's NR will do, so let's consider only "normal" NR that is out there... NeatVideo with light tweaking. And a little bit of fill in the shadows.

ISO2000 with minor compromises seems within reach... NR is a compromise, but think in terms of the audience. Think night exterior, forest, indie budget, with depth!
ISO3200 with Mysterium DR? Is that within reach?? Or am I dreaming in la la land?

ISO800 is for 4k, I mean 2k.

This question will come down to personal taste. As of today (and Graeme, Deanan and Rob aren't done yet), I don't see thinking about the NR "sauce" until after ISO 1640-2000 for properly exposed daylight shots. Whatever you choose as your threshold, tungsten will likely need the "sauce" about a stop or so sooner.

Next week I'll do a low light test to ISO 16,000 and see what happens. I've learned my lesson not to use studio lighting for high ISO examples... :-)

Jim

Okay canceling the Pre-Order of the 1D IV, as it seems that RED will do just fine in high ISO shooting needs.

I just seriously can't wait to the day were one camera seriously provides for both Motion and Still image capture at equally Stunning IQ standards, with insane Specs, oh wait.. is coming its called RED EPIC!!

ISO 16,000 - now we are really talking. What are you going to use for that? a single christmas tree light?

Jim, how about a single match? :-) People still talk to me about that first test I did with Red two years ago.

gim,
will the m-X sensor upgrade on teh R1 arrive after scarlet and epic release?

Thanks

g

The M-X upgrades to RED ONE will begin before we ship any EPICs or Scarlets.

Jim

That's Fantastic!
Hope the availability will be very large from the beginning of the program...
I am a colorist and i would love to have around footage with improved dynamic range and less noise as soon as possible...
Thanks!

g

Jim, if a low-serial-number Red One has its sensor upgraded in Jan or Feb, would that prevent that particular camera from being used as a trade-in/mark-off for Tattoo or Stage 2? I'm sorry I have not been following the details and terms of the sensor upgrade closely. But now that I see these amazing results and now that we learn how soon the upgrade might be coming, suddenly this upgrade is taking on great importance for people with projects starting early next year.

These sensitivity gains have me so stoked....

hehe... I deleted my post thinking I didn't want to sound like a whining kid at the toy store, but then you go and pull it out of the recycling bin xP

unfortunately the question would be if there will be snow in Minnesota :-)

Wow, Bad Azz.

I feel like I did 2 years ago with the early R1 stuff. That is seriously impressive for 4000iso!

4000iso, small/modular, pro interfaces, RedCode/Flute, it should be a serious azz wiping of the 5d/7d...!

Hey Jim, I have an 8ton truck just up the road from you with lots of toys. Hit me if I can help ya test that thing ;)
