  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is This The Future Of Film Distribution?

I'll find it hard to believe if the big movie theaters aren't around in the future. They'll definitely be different, but I can't see them going away anytime soon. I think there is a lot more to it than the traditional sense of the communal experience; laughing, clapping, crying, cheering, and simply enjoying a story in a darkened theater full of strangers.

It's really the viral marketing techniques which have made recent blockbusters such a fascination with today's youth/young adults. It becomes less about the actual movie, and more about the hyperreality experience of the event itself; opening night. This will never go away, even if we had 4k in our home at lightning fast speeds for a low price. It's about everything leading up to the movie; whether you're wearing Joker face paint or having lightsaber duels in line on opening night, it's all become an essential part of big movie releases. This cannot be rivaled in your own home.

Basically, while the typical communal experience (laughing, clapping, crying and cheering with strangers in a dark theater) alone is probably more than enough to keep theaters here, there are also new elements which, in my opinion, will keep theaters here for as long as we make movies. Bring on the new media so we can enjoy the movies in the privacy of our own homes, but that doesn't mean we still won't get to go to the cinema to get ripped off for a bottle of water

Oh yeah; and whatever happened to simply going out to dinner and catching a flick?? Is this going to become obsolete? :)

I was considering the possibility of new small art house theaters based on 4k projectors, a coffee bar, a real bar, an independent bookstore type thing all in one -- a cultural center where people come nightly. You could feasibly play all sorts of films, rather than just running the same one over and over for a week or more. You could play the classics, foreign films, whatever all in the same day.

Then I saw the price of that Sony projector and got a little depressed. Soon prices will come down due to competition, and we may see more small theaters popping up to battle against the multi-vomit-plexes.

One can dream...
