  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is This The Future Of Film Distribution?

The article says that they would still have a DVD release, so maybe they are planning to recoup their money that way. It says that the budget was $2,000,000.

Probably paid for by the DNC.

afterthought: Or by weight watchers:weight_lift: :w00t:

Michael Moore is an activist, if "giving away" his movie to make shure the message gets there until the elections, then he will.
Internet, slacker, He`s aiming into the young public (Whose the most indesicive voters).
Then he can always modify 2 or 3 things and then Premiere on teathers.

Just my toughts...

Snort. Future of Michael Moore's Film distribution, maybe.:meh:

He's the most successful (box office) documentarian in history - I wouldn't scoff at his business decisions. He may want to change the world and not care about the money 'cause he's rich. He may want to use this as a loss leader to generate interest in his other products. Or both.

TV has been "free" for a long time. Getting people to pay for media online is getting tougher. I think some version of free for the viewer is probably what the future holds 'cause if you're not giving it away the next guy will be.

Upon reading the press release the guy's a genius.

"To receive the download, people can sign up at SlackerUprising.com. A "Night of a Thousand House Parties" is planned for Oct. 4, when local neighborhood screenings are hoped to be scheduled. A DVD will be released Oct. 7.

Moore last week released a paperback book, "Mike's Election Guide 2008" and is currently working on a movie for theatrical release next year. That film is expected to examine America as an empire, but the director declined to discuss any details about it."

He's creating a direct email list, got other products to promote and he's trying to change the world in his image. The house parties probably will have voter registration drives.

I have been saying for years that the future is very cheap downloads with fast speeds. If people can DL a Bluray quality movie at blazing fast speeds, legally, for 5 bucks, they will do it. Otherwise, many will simply pirate the movie.

Yeah, I think giving away ad supported SD and selling BluRay w/extras might be viable. Just make sure you make stuff that people want to own in HiDef or make your extras extra compelling.

The problem is the pricing. Most Blurays I want to buy, I already spent $20 on at the theater. Now they want to charge me $35 at Best Buy for a .75 cent plastic disc? To add insult to injury, they soak these things in DRM so I cannot move them around to various computers, ipods, etc.

No thanks.

Price Blurays at 5 or 10 bucks and they will literally sell like hotcakes.

Maybe that could be the Indie producer advantage... $10 BluRay direct from the producer. I have had one indie seller tell me $9 was a kneejerk buy price for a lot of consumers.

These are exciting times to be in. The future of media and distribution is anybody's guess. Down the road a bit I predict, at home viewing of all movies on large HD screens for a current ticket price, will be the norm for releasing films. With enough product placement, many may be free as TV is today. It may be ten or twenty years away but I think this is the future. Theaters will probably go away completely except for art houses in major cities.

just my 2 cents

The communal experience is still one people like. I don't think current theaters provide the best version of that though. I think a new style of theater may emerge. Maybe dinner theaters or club theaters where the atmosphere is even more communal and the movie selections are even more niched to match the movie club. Kinda like nightclubs/bars/coffee shops.

How about parties upon new release dates? Just like Superbowl, all friends get together for the latest Batman, Superman, Rambo 12 etc etc... All at a nice house with a nice 12' HD screen, on comfortable sofas with great food and drink etc etc etc.... sounds nice to me. I think it's a very marketable concept. No distribution to theater owners and no brick and mortar overhead.

Hollywood screenwriter / director, John August, spoke about this recently with the release of his directorial debut, The Nines. He said he thought they would have been better off giving the film away for free online after their success on the festival circuit. He thought that that would drive interest in the full release DVD with extras.

As it was, by the time the film got to market almost 1 year later, it had lost most of its buzz.

here is a link to his post on the subject. Very interesting.

As far as looking at if from a audience stand point I'm all in favor of this type of model. However, I wonder how much volume an average sized Hollywood film would have to do to simply make their budgets back when they are only getting $5 per download with multiple people potentially viewing that download at the same sitting. Whereas in a theater everyone is buying their own ticket and it's usually a whole lot more than $5.

Being that I'm not a professional Hollywood filmmaker, alternative modes of distribution that get an indie into the hands of as many people as possible, do sound very exciting to me. But I will say that the greatest experiences I've ever had in viewing films have come in the theater as part of the communal experience...and I hope that does not go away.

BluRay a ripoff for indie producers

There are licensing fees for producers to pay just for releasing content on BluRay.

Low budget producers may not be able to make much profit at that price.

Ridiculous. You know what this is? Sony and their partners are trying to earn back the truckloads of money they lost dumping PS3s on the market at $300 below cost, not to mention the $450 million USD they spent bribing the major studios to torpedo HD-DVD.
