  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

is this a Design flaw in the new DSMC2 Body?

Jarred has hinted that new battery solutions from RED are in the pipeline. What would be the ideal solution?

It's a V-mount world, even Anton now offers a V-mount option, so no more non-standard mounting please.

Sizing:
1) small and light that can hold up for 45 minutes
2) a "standard" like a 90wH "brick" that fits the rear profile of the DSMC2 platform and shouldn't extend rearward more than 3", legal to carry on airplanes
3) a bomber for hours on sticks that fits the rear profile of the DSMC2 platform, but can extend rearward as much as 6" to allow higher capacities

The obvious chemistry is Lithium Ion, but perhaps Lithium Polymer would make more sense for the most compact iteration (#1 above).

Love it or hate it, every battery should have a D-tap built in like the BeBobs.

I don't know if a gel battery built into the V-mount plate is the best way, but there has to be a slick hot swap option.

Cheers - #19

Precisely, I've never been on a Red set where XL batteries or such have been used. V-lock is the professional choice for powering the camera and there has to be a little better focus on that instead of the XLs.

Actually these are pretty small, much like redvolt xl, I saw them in person at my local cine shop.... I stand corrected....

The design of the DSMC2 is just fantastic!

The design of the V-Lock Battery plates however aren't... At list not for my style...

I have design a special plate to lower the center f gravity a great deal on the Epic Dragon... If few of the solutions out there don't turn out good enough for me on Weapon... I'll design my own... The battery top should and must be at camera top level... Not even one INCH above it... This is how I like it and want it...

Or the only other solution is to go 3 Stud Gold Plate/AB Batteries and then you are good to go as with Phil's solution, problem is those batteries are really FAT... But there are also some Shorter V-Lock Batteries out there...

Problem is I have tried them all and only have been happy with the HD series form Blueshape... So I like to continue using them... Hopefully they'll be bringing out a shorter version as per to some NAB discussions.

This is a great solution...i hate the wire coming out of my AB plate. Let me know if you ever want to get rid of this :)

Wooden Camera offers a lower offset option for weapon.... just make sure you give room for air because the vents are back there on Weapon.

To be fair the problem is the size of the V lock batteries, not the plate. V lock batteries were designed for ENG cameras way back when cameras used to be monsters. . Good thing is that most manufacturers including us are now making or almost making short AB sized V locks, which fit perfectly.

Aha, you tipped your hand. :wink5: I was pretty sure you were up to something when I mentioned the Sony BP-FL75 a little while back and you were familiar. Will you be using the same lithium ion as previously or maybe some of the newer lithium technologies?

One of the things I like about Red is that the President/CEO seems to be as much of a gear geek as the rest of us, actually gets out and shoots, and looks around at what else is going on around the business. I have a lot of respect for Sony and Panasonic and over the years have had the opportunity to interact with some of the very top corporate people - and it seems like at the very top levels they get so involved with the corporate stuff that they'll tell you how excited they are about their new product but not realize they are a couple steps behind what some of the innovators are doing.

yes! give us the batteries! that's it, im now borrowing or renting batteries until RED's new ones come out. "fit perfectly" are the key, i much prefer a battery perfectly made for the camera, like sony did.

that also may of just solidified me staying with the pkg and the vlock expander :)

I don't think it's that strange that WC wouldn't have integrated an AC port into their battery plate. So far, the only company to have done so is Red, as far as I can tell, and that's on the XL module and the V-lock expander module, right? Element Technica didn't, and they're owned by Red. By and large, I think the expectation is that most people will have an expander I/O module on the camera, especially one that is so slim. Furthermore, adding AC in would make for a far more complex design, adding electronics, lemo ports, size and cost. In this case I think simpler is better, and the fact that it's cable-less is great. Only would have been nice to have some additional lemo power options like the ET design, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is able to add one of his D-Box power setups into the mix if you need the extra power options.

This!

Now I'd so much like to know if you'll offer 2 disruptive different sizes or keep the market for Redvolt XL..
Anyway, power to weight benchmark should be the 90Wh per 500 grams of newer Pag, correct?

Too early to ask?

Red Brick Five-Eighths? 5/8 height, 5/8 watts, 5/8 price (?) - maybe wishful thinking on price point...

I love Pags, but my Red Bricks have been great. I've had 6 of them since 2008, and just last week had my first issue with one. That's 8 years of less than ideal field conditions; freezing them, solar charging them, car charging, etc. The Red Brick has a watt to weight ratio to beat most any v-mount out there (giving a slight nod to Pag on that one), and an amazing watt to $ ratio. The footprint of the Redbrick is perfect for DSMC 1-2 if you just chop off the top 3/8. Then you make the 100w airline restriction as well.

Have you had any issues with PAG? Just wondering why they only deserve a "slight nod." I have 6 of them and I think the size/weight/capacity is amazing. I've mentioned them multiple times in this thread and no one seems to be acknowledging them as an option. It's like it either has to have RED branding or be an Anton Bauer CINE that takes up twice the space for the same amount of power.

No issues - I love the Pags. I used them on a handful of shoots and they are my favorites because of their size and weight - but unfortunately I don't own any. If I were buying batteries right now today, I'd buy them, but they are expensive. Somewhere I have a piece of paper with scribblings of weights, measurements and costs of a pile of different v-lock batteries - go figure, it's the geek in me. I can't find it now, but I remember Red Bricks having a great watt to weight ratio (second only to Pag), and also a very good watt to $ ratio (much better than Pag). So props to Pag. But if Red came out with a 5/8 brick I'd buy it. With the number of posts on v-lock batteries and size issues lately, I don't think I'm the only one who would. My point in the post above, is that Red Bricks are actually great batteries; great durability/longevity (in my experience), great watt to weight ratio, great watt to cost ratio. Chop the top 3/8 off of it and you've got a winner.
