  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there a working Red 617 camera?

I'm curious to know if there is a working Red Mysterium 617 camera floating about. I have a background in photography, and seeing that the sensor size of this camera would benefit alot of people in the photography world, in such ways of panoramas or super high resolution portraits etc. I once had a dream where I was outdoors with a 617, and I didn't treat it like a $55k+ camera, but like it was my first camera, of which i was taking pictures of any and everything. The camera was lightweight, and had a cord to a battery pack that I had on my hip. I would turn and see the clouds and hold the camera up and snap the trigger button. And then turn to something else like a squirrel and take it's picture. In this moment, taking pictures was fun.

Now mind you, I currently own a Nikon D3s with 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and a 50mm f/1.8 lens, with nikon sb-600 speed lights and an su-800 flash commander. Also I edit on photoshop, phocus, and capture one, on a macbook pro I wouldn't mind testing a 617 for photography purposes, while the rest of the world is trying to figure out how to handle it's video editing requirements. Now, I would request for adapters for nikon/canon lenses, shutter speeds up to 1/8000, and ISO up to 64,000. With both raw and jpeg or tiff capture at however many fps that the camera can do video.

I see this as being a major player in the photography world, because of how useful it can be for shooting panoramics, also replacing scanners, capture ultra high resolution images regardless of subject matter.

Another thing, I'm in Arkansas, there will more than likely not be a 617 here anytime soon, but Arkansas has it's naturally beautiful scenic blessings any camera is yet to capture. I only ask that this project gets updated with a soon release, so that at least my dream can be a reality if not to me but to someone equally worthy of a chance.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few prototypes floating around inside RED, but I doubt we will see any info on them until after we see the Monstro DRAGON sensor...

I doubt there is a 617 prototype. I would guess that its mathematical feasibility has been drafted, but it was always a monster project. As far we know they are still working on the first gen monstro sensor which is the Red Dragon.

It will be great for effects and for large format photography work. I want the 645 first. At which point I hope there will be an even playing field and its first come first served rather than earlier adopter preference (a loyalty I understand and applaud - up to Epic, but not beyond).

It's not to my advantage to support this policy as I still don't own a Red One or an Epic ... but I understand and support the early adopter preference.

Over time, I expect that to shift to a "good customer" preference. I mean, I expect if Peter Jackson asks for something he'll get it, being such a high profile customer and an early supporter.

Again, over time my goal is to be a good customer, by buying and using Red cameras in interesting and demanding situations and continuing to be a good member of the Red User community

I doubt there is a working camera system for 617.

I would guess they have a sensor at least "taped out" They may have a breadbox ... but its just conjecture, and you won't hear anything more than that until Red makes their product announcement.

As far as image recording, the R3D video file is a fully RAW and progressive format. It's about as flexible as Canon or Nikon RAW files in still photography. You have the option of recording with mathematically lossless compression on Epic and I imagine going forward.

The current Epic can shoot up to ISO 10000 (last I touched one about a month ago) but I didn't check for high shutter speeds.

Following the Red "tradition", if you can call it that after so short a history, I doubt you'll get "baked in" formats out of the camera like .jpg or .tiff.

REDCODE RAW is way more flexible than the Nikon and Canon RAW formats. For one, we can dial in compression levels to taste. It also does not bake in ISO or gain.

last time I bugged Jim about the 617 he said

The Monstro sensor... FF35, 645 and 617, are all moving down the development path. You will see them and you won't know what to do with all the resolution. :-)

Well, regardless of the raw capabilities it would have significantly greater image than what is capable now.
As far as lenses go, I want to say that from a photography aspect, you could in theory reverse a wide angle lens, and cover a sensor of it's size, but ultimately would be shooting something from a macro stand point, unless you have a system of glasses in the lens of which it has the subject being shot displayed through a normal lens that feeds into a reversed "wide angle" lens that will project the image onto the wide sensor area. The image that would be seen in the view finder would be upside down, which is right side up normally since cameras digitally reverse the image to be viewed normally through the viewfinder.

My other concern is that since Canon's been able to "improve" their sensor's readabilities to where 120mp aps-c sensor is now a reality, does that mean that other sensors that have been manufactured by any company are somewhat inefficient? Does that mean that the 617, not as it is now but a revised version, could possibly have the potential of being a single shot 5 gigapixel camera, along with video capability as a standard?
