I dont own a RED so I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but I'm wondering if there is a way to record simultaneously to an external recorder like a HyperDeck. Is it possible to hook it up in a way to allow for the record button on the camera to activate the record on the HyperDeck so that they files sync up later?

YES its very simple via the HDSDI port and you can activate your RED camera to trigger record the deck.

It also sends TC and reel name and number for easy of editing match back to the RAW its Awesome.

I use and love the Atomos Samurai Blade which is not only a Recorder its a nice monitor too.

Is there a way to do it in 4k? I know with the new broadcast module, you can get 4K out but I'm not sure about the record slave mode. Note that I'm aware of all the various outputs and ways to get picture out of the camera, which can be hooked up to any number of recording devices. My main curiosity stems from the slave mode recording that creates what would be frame accurate clips to be conformed to the R3D later.

No. And honestly I would use the REDMAGs for most workflows.

However, part of the Dragon upgrade and new Dragon bodies is the installation of new hardware that allows for use of the new 4K Broadcast Module which will stream out 4K up to 60 FPS. This likely will not be available to Mysterium-X bodies as a bit of hardware needs to be installed.

I can imagine potentially down the line for 4K out via HDMI 2.0 through a potential board upgrade to Dragon bodies as well, though I have no clue if it's possible or a relative time frame that would make that ideal. We are a ways away from that happening though. The 4K Broadcast Module will be purpose designed for exactly this and provide a bit more flexibility with current and future hardware. HDMI 2.0 tech will come done the line from 3rd party vendors and Red will likely implement/offer something.

Hello all, so there is an alternative for Red one Mx? Can we really record to an external device instead of Cf cards or Red drive? It would be a big news..

Your answer from long ago:

RED ONE is and always will be limited to 720p monitor output during record.

We did add a 1080p capability on playback though.

for 4k live-out as you say i'm pretty sure the broadcast module is what you would want. if you're doing it for proxy's you want hd anyways, and i'm really not sure why anyone would want 4k+ files that aren't r3d's - waste of space if you ask me - but whatever...

not sure i understand the question, but r1 puts out 720p via hd-sdi/hdmi and can be recorded externally. also, you can record to ssd's with the r1 if you switch out your cf for the ssd module...

FYI SoundDevices PIX240i will do HD PRes4444 (and other) with matched TC/file name sync'd to a RED. Built like a swiss watch, nice 5" monitor too.
