  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the Panasonic TH-42PF11UK still the plasma monitor of choice?

cool...

how's that work?

I mean it send patches that it;s own system read and you calibrate the plasma using the plasma control color setting (according to the reading that your are getting?)

or creating a lut?

thanks!

K10 can measure without contacting the display and it comes with the software.
You would have to adjust the RGB gain and bias while K10 can show the result in real time.

And how would you send the patches?
By computer right?
Would work through the nvidia quadro SDI?

Thanks

I would use dual link HDSDI to connect from RR or Bluefish 444 Epoch then use the software to adjust the parameters of PF12 manually.

thanks kaku,
i got the fact that you adjust manually on monitor,
but how can you send the patches through RR?

I mean ,the package comes with a software that is a patch generator/reader right?so i guess will need the pana connected to the computer trough the video card...

am i wrong?

Gabriele,

Do you mean patch as profile?

RR HDSDI is probably set with the gamma and color balance of whatever you choose in the gamma space and color space (like 709) and probably from level ranging from 0 to 1023 (need to get confirm from RED), so if you calibrate PF12 according to say 709 standard, it should match the standard rather than changing the output via profile.

Gabriele,

You can read about the calibrating software that is compatible with K10 about here.

No i meant color patches...but because you said that you would use the RR sdi,
I thought you meant for the calibration process(send patches to the monitor and read the value with the probe and change RGB gain Nd bias on the monitor...)

so my question was :how you connect the monitor to send the patches for the calibration procedure?...The pana does not even come with the DVI...

Gabriele,

Ah, patching, sorry. I actually bought the test pattern generator with HDSDI and HDMI from Spectracal to do the calibration, so I can do both HDSDI and HDMI calibration.

So the source material is from the test patter generator to PF12 via HDSDI or HDMI. Then K10 connected to laptop PC via USB running the software.

Ok now it's clear !

And looks a great solution ...a bit expensive maybe..but top of the line ...

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks

you can also use dvd with remote to playback the test patterns.

So are you seeing any difference between the HDSDI and the HDMI inputs ?

Hello Dave,

I haven't received none of what I mentioned yet, the PF12 65" is going to be delivered to our show booth at IntereBEE and the K10 with Calman will be delivered in about a week. I can let you know by next week or so.

Great. We have HDSDI (single link) here and HDMI. As yet I dont see a difference but thats not to say there isnt one.

The only issue that I don't have an answer for is the low FC on peak whites on monitor mode but it seems fine in Normal mode. But I would like to know if there is any adverse automatic processing in normal mode that could affect the display.

Dave,

What Panasonic claims is that the automatic processing is to keep the same brightness to simulate CRT characteristics but people seem to be afraid that it is auto gain control. What is your opinion on that?

Id like to know this my self, as It seems unclear. I have asked Panasonic (no response yet) what the function actually is and how it intereacts with other functions. From what I understand when the display is in 'Monitor' mode the automatic functions are disabled. However the peak white (100% patch) measued about 24FL and a higher output is needed ideally and it would be good if contrast were ajustable, Other than that 'monitor' mode seems fine.

In 'Normal' mode contrast ajustment is available and about 32 FL is possible, but the auto functions may still operate. What is unclear is that the other two functions 'Studio Gain' mode (under the hidden menu/surround) and 'studio white ballance', if when enabled affect 'Monitor and 'Normal' functions. Studio white ballance seem not to do anything except offer a W/B of 3200k which is no good for our use. No information is given to it disabling
auto functions. Studio gain says it increased contrast to avoid white out. If, when its enabled it seems to have no effect on displayed picture, thats not to say its not doing anything but I don't see it affecting the image in an obvious way. What I had hoped is that Studio W/B disabled the auto functions in 'Normal' mode which would then offer whats needed.

I have two presets one in 'Monitor' and the other in 'Normal' mode. essentialy they are the same, but normal is set to maximum white, about 24 FL, and in normal its about 32 FL. We are endevouring to visualy see any obvious auto gain at work in Normal mode, so far we don't see anything.

Im sorry thats not a very good answer but Ill let you know when I hear back from Panasonic. If you find out any more please let us know.

I'm also looking at getting a TH-42PF11EK (UK version) to use with a Red Rocket for on set review (not critical coloring).

I will be running it via SDI out through a Blackmagic HDLink box so
my question is will just going into the monitor via the DVI-D input suffice (mapped via the HDLink box just as I use a current 24" Dell widescreen) or do I definitely need to buy the HDMI and or SDI module?

I couldn't work out if the HDMI module comes as standard or whether its just Component....

Thanks in advance.

What we have found so far.....

HDMI is a dual input board, about £145 it does come with single DVI-D though and can accept HDMI via a convertor cable.

Im still not certain if there is any quality issue in using an external convertor as we Havant tried it yet as we don't have one available right now. The internal SDI/HDSDI one is fine but does cost more. By the time your purchased an HDMI card and external convertor the internal option still is about £150 more in cost.

If you have the Black magic box already, and connect via DVI-D then Id give it a go first and see how you get on. You can fit the SDI card later if you need to. I don't know if this solution is 8 or 10 bit capable though.

And don't forget to order the base or stand for it, it doesnt come with one...........

Hope this helps, if you find out more on this please let us know.

I am going to do the same:
SDI--->hdlink-->DVI.

Does anyone can confirm that the panasonic will accept 1080/23.98PsF over the DVI?(or 1080/23.98P?)

Thanks
