Seems like every Red camera is Netflix approved. Any news if the Komodo will be joining the other Red cameras in the list of approved cameras.

It was very literally designed to service a need in this space initially. Now that the production models are shipping it's likely just a matter of time before you see it on their site.

It makes sense that the Komodo wouldn't be on the approved list this soon, since Netflix tests cameras pretty extensively before putting them on the list.

If the origin of Komodo really is the Netflix need (according to Jarred?), one would assume they could've had this chance by now, probably even before the STs appeared.

The real interesting story here is why this gets asked so often by so many different people.

It's been mentioned in one of the livestream interviews during the first lockdown portion of the pandemic. It's actually been a topic for some time because certain smaller cameras have been used to small camera applications that both don't cut wonderfully with the primary cameras used on the films or series, but also generally produce some unwanted things on the post side.

The 2nd part of that question. Netflix and virtually every other streaming entity and even studios as a whole have either official approved camera lists for original productions or somewhat loose recommendations. Mainly this is to avoid using once again things that create costly headaches on the post side. Often codec related in terms of blocky artifacts or general artifacts due to the camera system. Sometimes it's reliability related. Most often there's a minimum bar for codec, color bit-depth, and often resolution. Sometimes some other workflow related stuff. i.e. Netflix for instance wants you to use 4K and higher resolution cameras generally. Less of an issue now that everybody makes 4K or 4K+ solutions.

The additional consideration is marketing your project if you are ever selling it to an entity in modern times. You want to make that enticing for companies if you are looking to sell a project.

Phil already answered the second part nicely, so I won't worry about that. :)

The impression I got from Jarred's posts regarding the Komodo was that the requests came from people making movies for Netflix, not from Netflix. The only thing that implies is that Netflix probably has had the same involvement in Komodo's development that we have, which is mostly being either spectators or beta testers.

Testing a beta camera for Netflix approval wouldn't be wise; it could have gotten rejected because of bugs causing post problems -- i.e. what Phil is referring to. Since the purpose of a beta is to help the developers FIND those bugs so that they can fix them, Netflix is probably either awaiting a Komodo for testing or getting the tests underway now that the production models are shipping.

I know by now it's old news and everyone knows the answer, but just to do a TL;DR of sort for someone new here who may not already know : YES, it is Netflix Approved.

Welcome to REDuser. You seem different than usual. Tough to tell if it's a USA sort of day, Canada, UK, or Vietnam this week, looks like Australia would be next week if I'm not mistaken. Also, hard to tell if it was you or a coworker two posts above, but more likely a machine during a specific shift with an automated login. Seems like automated registration is working fine. Got to work on that name generator though and you should stop using those particular email providers for that matter. Too many traceable signatures to origin even with the VPN dance. The site cycle is also kind of an issue.

Clever to sniff the thread for a valid post this time around, better than a mere Thanks!

There are better forums for link farming on the internet than here. Links rarely stay up for more than a few minutes. These days more often than not we ban before posting even occurs, even on sleeper accounts.

Next time I'm over there we should grab some tea. Would love to see the shop, or at least what's behind it.

See you on the next account.
