Is the DSMC2 REVOLT Expander worth the money for sound?

I need to get better sound out of my Red Epic W. Using the mini mic jack I have now, just gives me horrible audio compared to my Canon or even the DSLR Canon cameras. I am not a sound expert but I am a solo shooter at times. I want to be able to plug in my Sennheiser AVX system in the XLR connectors and hope to get better sound. Let me know your thoughts. I have an opportunity to buy one pretty cheap.

Currently running an zoom h6 that I plug my XLRs into and record the different channels. On the H6 I use the line out to plug into the io v-lock expander mic in so that I can get a decent scratch and perfect sync in post.

More flexible set up, but also less compact. Depending on how much you’re dropping on the revolt through...

I am getting it for about $2300. My main concern is I want plug and play and simplicity since I am mostly solo. Tryin not to have to rig things to get better sound if that makes sense and not have things attached allover the place. So I am hoping this device will give me decent sound.

I was wondering does this red volt work as a preamp ?

I've been having the same issue.. Last week my DSMC2 Base Expander headphone jack output made a ton of distortion that was not recorded on the RED Weapon's audio scratch track. It has never done it before, didn't do it during prep- but on set it was a huge pain and wasted a lot of my client's time. The mixer sounded fine, the audio recorder was fine, the Red's playback was fine, but monitoring was terrible.. After that experience I think it is time to get some XLR I/O's on the camera.. In addition to the DSMC Revolt expander, I have also been thinking about instead going with the Tilta B1 rig (I also need an AB gold mount).. What do you all think of that kit, and is there a better option for standard I/O's, XLR and Gold Mount? https://tilta.com/shop/tilta-for-red-weaponscarlet-wraven-rig-esr-t01-b/

I doubt there is any advantage in sound as this also doesn't have it's own preamp. Its the same as adding a Wooden Camera A-Box.

I own a DSMC2 REVOLT Expander and it rarely comes off the camera. I have not done any comparison tests in regards to audio quality but the ergonomics alone make the camera a joy to use. The camera is so much better on the shoulder and the extra room makes adding production gunk no problem. All the connectors are sweet and the extensive audio inputs mean no more grumbling from the sound department. While untested the audio quality has never been an issue with any clients.

Are you talking about the DSMC2 REDVOLT expander? Or is there a product I'm not finding called the REVOLT? Please send a link to the expander we're discussing.
Thanks.

Sorry I meant Red Volt Expander. Typo. I spoke with some people live about it and it sounds like it's a good thing to have. I found out I will need to also buy a V mount plate to add to it. AUURGHH!!! RED!!!!

For audio, the Tilta solution isn't good. It doesn't have preamps or faders, so you have to rely on the virtual sliders, which are clumsy and imprecise, plus you need an external box to provide phantom power if your mic doesn't take batteries... not recommended.

I was having the same headphone distortion issues with my base expander a few weeks ago - made it completely unusable for my shoot so I had to leave the Red at home and take the FS7. That combined with the need to strap on a separate phantom power box to run my Schoeps I pulled the trigger on the OMOD XLR2. It arrived today - first tests here in the office are very promising. It's the cleanest sound I've gotten plugging a mic directly into the RED. I need to run it through some real world situations but at first glance it looks like they righted the wrongs from v01.

Please keep us posted. I am not overly impressed with the Red Volt Expander. Maybe this is the route to go! I like the analog knobs also and mich smaller.
