Hey guys so to keep a long story short i saved every penny and nickel i had, and took on some good ol American debt to get me a dragon and a red mag. I got my self the 240gb Red Mag. It worked fine for about 4 or 5 shoots until yesterday. I went out to film came back home even played the shots back on the LCD. I properly shut down.

Heres where i think i ruined my life. I left a AB battery on the cam and the red mag in. Today when i pulled the red mag out of the camera ( the AB still attatched - camera off of course) and inserted it into my red mag reader and that was it. My file manager froze. The files are in the mag but theres no chance of transferring them. So i put it back in the camera to format it - FAIL. I try to secure format the card - FAIL i try to record one clip - FAIL.

Now i have seen many forums but 0 answers i hope some one can please give us an answer. Yes i have created a ticket.

ps. of course this happens right after my 90 day warranty -_- i fell like such a bozo.
RED Epic wit Dragon sensor.

If this has happened to any one can i please get some info on what the problem was, is it the Camera? Is it the Mag? How much was it to fix it? should i start learning how to make coffee?:emote_22_yikes:

First, contact your Bomb Squad Rep, they might be able to help. I thought I've heard of everything, but this one is new to me.

If the battery just drained out and the camera was off I can't see why it would damage anything. Heck, even if it was on and died it should really do anything.

I'd look for other possibilities, like static charge or "other". Most REDMAG issues I've seen usually come down to people getting the contacts dirty either in camera or on the mag.

Hey Phil well the AB didn't completely die so it still had 30 percent left so thats not it. Dirty? I do not think so the mag is pretty new and the Camera was sent to Red for Inspection before transfer of ownership but it is a possibility. I Will be contacting my Bomb Squad Rep as soon as they open tomorrow. Will post results.

Uh-oh.. Subscribed to this thread! Makes me a little bit worried as for now I only have one card (30 days old), and I'll have a major shoot next week...

One card is never a good idea but, obviously, REDmags are expensive.

I'd be curious to know how full the card was. In over 6 years of shooting RED (3 different cameras), I have never lost even one frame of footage. And my current 64G REDmags are more than 4 years old now. Of course, it does happen occasionally. The only caution I have regularly heard about shooting is to change mags when the card gets to about 90% or so - best not to go right up to the point at which it shuts off; although I have even done that.

Hope you get this solved and folks should know that this is not a usual occurrence.

Hey guys thanks for replying the card had 4 shots in it. those shots are still in there now. The card is 87% free. This does worry me because this could of happen on a professional shoot thank the lord i was only doing some test shots for my self. As of now i contacted red, they did ask for a log file but the thing is the card will save the log but no chance of transferring the log or even opening it. I have heard great things about the mags so this is why i am so surprised this is happening. For the record I have personally only put 27 hours on the camera since transfer of ownership.

What worries me the most is that this happens again with out knowing what the problem is.

Have you tried a different mag reader? A different computer? If you can see the files, and the camera is writing log files to the card, it might not be the card.

And it might not be the camera, either. Have you tried another card in the camera? Maybe you can borrow one and see if that one works.

If you check the other forum, you'll see that this is both a very rare (but well discussed) issue - and almost always has something to do with the battery. I also had an issue (Format error after a day of filming in a prison), and it seems the general consensus is that it mostly happens when the battery is pulled moments after shut down. (Possibly if the body is closing the card, even though the camera system looks like it is off.)

Either way, call your rep and tech support. Send a ticket, and they may even want to see your Mag. Seems like no one has gotten to the bottom of this one yet.

Send a log file to Red and you will probably need to send your mag to Red to see if they can recover the footage.

I have had the same two 512 GB (black version) since they came out a few years ago. I have accidentally pulled them out without ejecting, etc... and they are solid.

Only time I enounctered an issue turned out to be a camera FW bug earlier this year. This bug popped up a dialog saying media is not formatted for camera. We did not format as it had media on it and I wanted to send a log file to Red to investigate, which turned out to be a bug and was fixed.

Twice this year I ran into an issue (Only one was mag related) and sent log files to Red to investigate and both were bugs that were fixed. Morale of the story, ALWAYS send a log file to Red to investigate. Take screen shots if you encounter an error message and send repro steps if you can.

Have you tried running the RedUndead recovery app via Terminal (utility app on Mac)?

I took my camera in and we tried to do a factory reset. We found out that the RedMag was gone dead. We tried a new mag that worked and allowed us to pull a log file off it. There were some errors in the log file im waiting on RED to contact me now. I will post the update when i get it.

Hey guys, Just a update. RED did pull the LOG file and has begun to inspect the errors they found but as of now two weeks have passed and my RED Dragon is still being inspected. Apparently they have not been able to pinpoint what is wrong with the camera but this is what i received in an email "it looks like the camera did not cause the issue to the mag but we are not able to pinpoint the exact cause as we were not there when it began".

After receiving an email that stated my camera was good to go, "Our repair team has confirmed your EPIC DRAGON is working to specifications" i assumed i could pick it up. To my surprise when i called the pick up location in LA i was told that my camera was actually still being inspected by a RED Tech and that he has not been able to find the problem.

I have to admit. I am confused. Im waiting on a call from RED today i will update after i speak to some one.

I do have to say though, They have had the log file for two weeks and still no exact reason why this happen? Hoping to get an actual answer from RED, especially when i dropped the camera off in person and a RED rep told me to "Don't worry, we will give you a detail breakdown of why and how it happen". - this is all i want.

I just miss my camera, to me it was brand new.
And Red insured me when i bought it that it was 100% up to RED standards.

Anthony thank you for your post, i too have read the post you speak about but even in those 17 pages there still wasnt an answer. I would love to be able to agree with you on this one. Only problem is the battery never died or was pulled of the camera during this event. i had a Anton Bauer on it and it never died. I did have a red volt in the side handle but i dont belive the Red volt even had a chance to die.

Hey Guys! just got word from RED that my camera is fine ! I'm very excited to hear this and to be honest just over the situation and just want my baby back :D. What it came down to was simply the red mag had a manufacture error. RED gave me another mag due to the 1 year manufacture warranty (yay me). Over all red took great care of me i'm very happy to hear it wasn't the camera. I am closing this thread !

If this happens to anyone else my best advice would be get the log file if possible and send that in.
)

PS. was running latest firmware.
