  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it possible to build your own Mac Pro?

Here we go again; my usual disclaimer, I use all three but.... you make osx sound like a barely working frankenstein. Whatever !

When the Finder stops crashing and hanging when you try to copy 1000-frame image sequences, I will pronounce it working.

By the way, the best way to work around this that I've found is to turn all icons off and use columns mode.

That is one I haven't encountered, in fact , I can't remember the last time osx crashed on me, maybe six months ago.

Bruce, there may be something going on with your system. Your post made me curious... so I moved and copied a 6,553 frame 2K DPX sequence a few times. No crash, no hanging, no pinwheel... it just took a while [as I would expect any 51GB chunk of files to].

I concur with Brook. No such problems here and I move 1000's of images all the time.

OTOH, I just love the memory leaks in Photoshop CS2 (don't know if CS3 is fixed, I haven't updated yet) and I've found it pretty easy to crash Safari... I can stall Finder pretty easily too with other tasks... So yeah, OSX still has its issues. ...Just like any other OS.

I'm not here to start a war. I can do that all over the place. The only reason I even posted was the nature of the thread.

I don't like either OS X or Windows. I find myself tearing my hair out trying to get anything done on those platforms. Win2000+ and OS X both are reasonable OSs and are useful tools. I just don't like em' much.

lets get back on topic...

lets get back on topic...

Wasn't this a 'Can OSX run on my PC?' Post? C'mon guys...

I've been Cutting professionally in FCP 6 for over two months... Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 runs smoother because not all the bugs have been worked out of 10.4.9,

However developers are crunching on 10.4.11 and skipping a few... 10.5 is in development now and running smoothly on X86...

I wouldn't mind paying $200 for a Mac os X operating system for X86... now that all the dev / hackers have done all the hard work to create drivers for almost all hardware... it would only sky-rocket profits for Apple. Wait for another 2 years and It'll drop. dont worry... those die hard Apple fans will still buy Apple Hardware. But me a Pro Digitech... not so fast.

Invest in a X86 server workstation w/ the Southbridge 6321ESB / North Bridge Intel 5000X. All of your hardware is compatible. But Dual Socket Xeon Boards do not feature overclocking abilities like 775 Quad core 2 Duo does.
Kind of why I'm halting my 8 core Xeon ($1500, if you build it yourself) 2.0ghz clovertown's are $300 each... But a core2Quad is $300... and A board is $200-$250... well affordable... even for a low budget... Ive set up some systems for some stooges, and they have not managed to break the install in 8 months...

Development is extraordinary... I dont Edit on a Mac any more...I sold my G5 when I saw how well it ran on my PC... I personally see more crashes on a PPC G5 than my 3.0ghz Core2duo... It's been solid for six months... I trust it!
Black Magic works! Digidesign Pro tools works! HD audio, I Edit in 1080P24 from XDCAM and Varicam / HVX-500... No troubles, everything real-time(as expected).

oh...
Linux can do many things Windows and Mac os x cannot... I give respect!

Just like this camera will break many boundaries so will MacOSX86...
