  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it me, or does audio SUCK on Scarlet?

While some people have had success with the Hosa cable mentioned earlier, I could NOT get it to work reliably. It is not worth it in my opinion. However, this Mogami cable works perfectly (as does the A-box from Wooden Camera).

Premiere doesn't have support for audio playback with R3d files yet.

Wow, that's good to know... I'd tested audio on my SCARLET but hadn't transferred into Premiere.

I can confirm 100% now that it was the cable that was the problem. Cheap Radio Shack components that I used to make the cables.
I can also confirm that the HOSA XVS-102F cables work. Not the best cables in the world, but better than the ones I made!
Problem solved.

Don't you wish the thread title was a bit different now? :)

I'm having huge issues trying to get the audio figured out. I'm running an modded Oktava into a Sound Devices Mix-pre with phantom power on and out into those Hosa 102f cables. I've tried so many combos and I'm just getting a hugely distorted and hot signal. I have the input all the way down to 8db and when I do the slate, it clips the meters. Now I know the cabling works, because I have done the same exact setup with a portable Zoom recorder and I get proper levels and everything sounds great. There isn't even any handling noise on the cables. Does anyone have any clues to what I am doing wrong? The meters are a bit confusing to me as well, does anyone know where proper levels should be hitting? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like you have a line level signal out of your mixer. Could it be you have the Scarlet input set to mic level?

Do you know where that option to switch it is? I thought I exhausted all of the menu options...man I feel stupid.

See page 14 of the Operation Guide, "Line Level Analog Inputs."

Translation: There is no menu setting for line level input. Stuart has made it clear that leaving out a direct line level capabiliity on the Brain was a conscious decision by RED. The instructions above basically tell you to lower the mixer output to a mic level. You can do this by turning down mixer output volume or using pads. The input level is correct when the Scarlet/Epic audio meter says it's correct. You can send a test signal out from your MixPre to set it. Pad:

Thanks Steve. I just ordered two of those.

Is it confirmed that the the phantom is not enabeld yet. If its not enabeld, is it any words when its going to be?
I want to use phantompowered mic but maby I have to use my rode ntg2 until this works.

Yes, it is confirmed. If you read the Operational Notes for the latest Scarlet beta firmware it states that Plantom power is disabled. This is the same for the build which is shipping. I would also love to know when it's going to be available. I understand that it worked on EPIC in a couple of builds but they disabled it because people were frying mics, see this post:

Look, RED has disabled phantom power in Epic because people are plugging all kinds of ---- into those miniplugs without regard to whether it will work or even cause damage (more likely damage to the mic rather than the camera). Audio is more than half of what you use to communicate with your audience. If you're a small operator, please learn some basics before plugging anything into that jack. Or at least use a properly wired, proven adapter like the Wooden, And learn where to go in the RED menu to set up the jacks for bal/unbal, phantom on/off. And please don't use a cheap consumer (unbalanced, stereo, or bias-powered) mic with your $10,000 kit - at least not to record primary sound. Thanks, from someone who wants phantom power enabled.

Wow, kind of shocking to see myself quoted on a bad hair day. I like to think I'm nicer and more patient than that. But these recurring audio questions really do bother me - for a lot of reasons.

As for when phantom power will be enabled - remember RED is a professional CINEMA camera company, and Cinema pros always record double-system. So probably not at the top of their list.

I cant figure out how to export the audio on this thing. When I export BWF I get this error "Failed to add samples for Frame 288 to bwf file"

on a side note will a wave form appear if there is audio when I click on the bottom "Audio" tab. All i see is flat red lines.

Haha, I didn't realise you were already posting in this thread! Did you shoot an EPIC with phantom power enabled? Was it a setting in the Audio Input menu?
I think that RED should automatically disable Phantom whenever the camera detects that a mic is disconnected and have a popup which allows you to re enable it when a new mic is plugged in which explains the risks so that people are less likely to fry equipment.

Phantom power was apparently enabled in one of the beta builds, 2.0.2, I think. But as soon as some excited folks started posting about it, Stuart said don't use it. I don't recall anyone reporting that they actually tried it, but it was in the Audio Input menu. Personally, I've never touched an Epic, other than other people's R3D's and am waiting for Scarlet. I'm one of the people that was hoping for the Fixed, so I'm adapting to the change. But as someone on the lower end of Scarlet's user base, I know I will use the audio inputs regularly, so I have a special interest having all functions enabled.

I really like the disable and warning idea.
