  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is EPIC an asset or a liability?

Feels like the thread is just a general echo of frustration. Frustration that can only be dialed down with real and concrete shipping of Epic and Scarlet. I agree that the cheap jabs are persistent and annoying.

I could see the frustration as well as anger in some comments.
Somebody said 3 days to upgrade a camera. 8000 will take 24,000 days. That is 65 years. Even one camera per day will take 22 years. :confused5:
Obviously one thing is sure not all cameras are going the MX upgrade path RAPIDLY they way somebody expressing.

I hope EPIC will be launched soon and RED will discontinue the MX upgrade and give EPIC to everybody including the new buyers that includes me as well

Hi Ketch,

I believe the first statement to be true, it therefore follows that RED will catch up very quickly, probably in a few weeks, at that point RED will probably start shipping MX sensors in R1's @ $17,500 with a full years guarantee.

Best Stephen

In the mean time - those of us who did upgrade to the new sensor are reaping the benefits. In a few weeks - if what you say does occur - I'll have already paid for my sensor upgrade - and then some.

All good and happy here.

MX Upgrade

MX Upgrade

Maybe divide 22 years by (20-30) that is the No. of cams/day??? (Weird math man)... I am over 2.500 and got my e-mail a few weeks ago. Everyone else here in Indonesia has upgraded or will upgrade as soon as they get the e-mail. So it is going with normal speed now...

figures used just for fun. I have come across many low serial number cameras for sale saying ready for MX upgrade. So RED is giving unlimited time for MX upgrade?

With all due respect to original poster, this thread is a little misguided. Here's the easy way top break it down, at least to me.

R1 Mysterium - Incredible camera that has evolved via firmware and some hardware upgrades. Should still prove to be an asset for many years to come in the right hands.

R1 Mysterium-X - Having shot a lot with this camera, I can say it is a huge improvement over Mysterium, combined with new color science and OLPF this camera will be a force for quite a while. Once Epic is out, the rental market will have to adjust, but for DPs, owner/ops, production companies, anyone who has full control over which camera gets used, this one could be used for many years with incredible results.

Epic - This is the evolution. Everything RED learned with R1 will be incorporated into this camera. True 4K recording, smaller form factor, less power consumption, the list goes on and on. Yes, this will be the one everyone is craving after and will be very popular, especially in rental market.

Now, the thing to know is that any of these cameras just mentioned can shoot incredible footage. Anyone looking to buy one, or compare which one is right for them must ask themselves what do they want to do with it, how much can they afford to spend, and what will generate ROI. For example. If you shoot mostly low light and handheld then Epic is probably the way to go.

Ha ha, dude, every one I know in Los Angeles has an MX'd Red camera. Believe me thats a lot of cameras. The Red Camera is the Cheapest all purpose Digital film camera you can buy today, even if it was $50k.
Whether the Epic is here or not, the Red One MX on its own is a super powerful blockbuster image quality camera Period. You can either go out and make movies or you can make excuses, but you can't do both.
Who cares what Red does with their time, they make wonderful tools. Personally I don't care whether the Epic is ready or not. The regular non MX'ed Red one at build 30 makes some incredibly beautiful images and at 4.5k it will still be an excellent cam for another 5 yrs.
Why are you worried about who is selling used cams to whom. If you are a gadget freak that has to own a brand new camera then wait.
Don't worry about Red's market position, worry about your film.

How does it matter to me or to anybody either EPIC is a liability or an asset to RED?. But one thing is sure. I have never seen any company in the world declaring 2 kinds of upgrades at the same time. RED has done it. RED has done so many things in a different way, may be this also a novel marketing strategy.

Oh my god. You really think that a company like RED takes in one RED ONE at a time and then spends 3 days upgrading it? As I understood the original poster of that number meant that they sent in their cameras, and got them back in 3 days. This means that the cameras spent at least 1 day in transit. Also, I'm pretty damn sure that at any given time there are at least 15-30 cameras being "MX"ed at an increasing rate meaning that by the time EPICS and SCARLETS are out the door almost all R1's will be mx'ed.

Funny how people forget that JJ made his billions in manufacturing. I think he knows a thing or two about business, even though he often claims to be a naive first time product manufacturer. He does have a pretty large manufacturing base stateside.

Indeed. Some comments are like certain pictures, just funny :-)

Strategic Offensive Asset: RedCode - Allows for high quality imaging and image management from acquisition through post and soon to exhibition.

Force Disposition: Ubiquitous. Freely distributed to both hardened and non-hardened sites, portable enough to facilitate guerilla operations and small scale projects.

Tactical Offensive Asset: Epic, Red One, et. al.

Force Disposition: Low-Cost autonomous units pre-deployed to trained operators throughout the AO (Area of Operations).

Epic is a RedCode delivery vehicle. The best one yet. Think of RedCode as a nano-thermite high-explosive such as C4, Semtex or Composition B-- in other words: The Warhead. The camera is the missile or delivery mechanism. The Red One is similar to a JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) where guidance fins have been retrofitted to the bomb-casing and guidance is achieved using GPS data. Epic is more like a Tomahawk Land Attack Missile or T-LAM. T-LAM uses both GPS and Terrain Recognition Navigation (Comprised of both Synthetic Aperture Radar and Image Recognition) in order to hit its target.

So, while the Red One gets to the target fairly reliably in any weather, it has to be carried to within launch distance. Epic is more like a fire-and-forget system. Epic is launched from a stand-off position and finds its way to the target autonomously in any weather. In both cases however, they can pile lethal amounts of RedCode onto a subject for sustained periods of time and at increasingly greater frame rates and dynamic range. In any event, the enemy will inevitably wilt under a sustained, directed RedCode attack and can be reliably swept aside to allow for ground incursion and occupation in advance of nation-building efforts.
