It is surprising many people are offering their executed RED and wants to keep the EPIC with them. If somebody looking for only RED why should they buy a used one? They rather buy the new one. Ok, the LCD and EVF are not there for new one. Surprisingly "obsolescence" the REDs policy doesn't apply here for RED Company. Lot of my friends who bought RED without EVF are cursing themselves. In the last minute I stopped buying it because there is no EVF, 7" LCD, Storage HDD and some other attachments with new camera. RED is not interested to look at this problems because they are too busy in EPIC.

Look at the sales of RED. It was selling in Hundreds in the last few years, now? I am sure the numbers must be very very low. The upgrade to MX is also very slow moving, not many are opting for it. You can see some very low serial number cameras are available for sale saying "Ready for MX upgrade". People have paid advance for EPIC upgrade and trying to sell RED and wants to buy EPIC with that money. Look at RED company position now, I hope it is not on cross road.

1. No big sales of new RED1s
2. No real rush for MX upgrade
3. SWAT team is working on bugs.
New the question is, Is EPIC an asset or liability to RED?

Everyone I know with a Red One here in Los Angeles has either upgraded to MX or is in line to get it done. Just got mine done, and it an amazing improvement in DR and blue channel noise. Each to his own opinion. Also, the Red One has been selling in the thousands per year, not hundreds. Probably 4000-5000 total by now. I wonder where you are getting your information, as I question it's accuracy.

Any camera is an asset, if it provides the user with the futures needed to shoot their progects!!

Red One cameras have been selling as many have taken the decision to opt for the stage 2 Epic-X upgrade path, and many more will read of their Red ONe cameras during the Trade in for the stage 3 Epic-X.

MX upgrades are actually moving lighting fast, we had our cameras done in 3 days! You would be really surpised to actually now what Number Red is working on now.

Back stock on items is really the week link here, agree, but there is plenty of used, like new for sale here on the forum, so IMO, there is no excuse not to buy a Red One if you need one, the EVF and or anything else can be found here form tursted members of this community, which is not like buying form Red but similar, if purchased from active and trusted members.

Difference is that if you need an MX Red ONe then you have no choice as to buy used since there is still a wait in order to be able to buy a new Red ONe form the Red store with MX sensor, as this will not be offered in the new cameras till all current sold Red ONes have had a chance on upgrading theirs.

As far as the reason why some have not upgraded their Red Ones, is because many are not in the Movie business, and they are very happy with the M sensor, so they wait, and or prefer place their money towards the Epic-X.

But there is many other cameras out there to choose form depending on needs and budget, but Red remains a choice of high value offering the highest IQ.

Obsolence, if in fact why Red has offered the Trade in program and facilitaded discounts to thoise wanting to upgrade to the Epic which will offer what Jim envisioned and promised when said Obsolence absololete!

Also don't forget that the MX upgrade on the Red One, is a huge thing.

It is sort of like asking why someone would buy a used car. It seems obvious to me that buying a RED One used can save the buyer money. It is still an astounding camera. Some sellers are selling complete packages, which makes it very easy to be up and running immediately.

The availability of certain accessories has been a problem at times, although I disagree completely with your opinion that RED is not interested.

It is clear that RED is transitioning to EPIC series cameras. It is unrealistic to expect the same sales figures over time. And from everything I have read it appears MX upgrades are going quickly and are popular, especially for those RED One owners upgrading to EPIC-X Stage 2.

1. I don't see this as unexpected.
2. I question this assertion.
3. Again, to sort out issues was part of the stated plan with EPIC-Tattoo.

I respect that you raise this question in a constructive way.

IMO, EPIC is an asset. There is now a pent-up demand for this to ship. Once it does ship, it will be the talk of the industry with:

debates:violent5:

comparisons to iPhone 4 :emote_whack:

pixel peepers obsessing over every pixel :undecided:

celebrity EPIC sightings :coolgleamA:

rumors :001_unsure::emote_popcorn::frown2:

and most importantly..

projects being planned, new ways to shoot being discussed, fantastic quality footage to view...

EPIC is an asset in every sense of the word.

My explanation to the second point is many cameras available for sale as "already paid for upgrade to epic" but not for MX. Thanks for noting my intention, this is absolute constructive thread and discussion I have started. I do not own a RED, but still I am a big fan of RED, because what it did to digital content acquisition is nothing but a miracle.

keep in mind that the new reds do not come with the upgraded sensor... that is an additional cost either way.

Do you actually believe that you have a better handle on RED's roadmap than RED does?

It's not RED's responsibility to decide how it's products are used or which ones are adopted by their users.

You may feel you have some insight but basically your argument is predicated upon believing every thing RED says. This is marketing. You need to discern what is marketing and what is actually happening.

In a capitalist model a company continues to make products to offer it's customers, sometimes the newer products are better and the customers opt to use the new products.

Eventually the older products do become obsolete, that generally never changes.

FACT - EPIC will be better. people will use EPIC instead of RED or MX RED. There is no way that will not happen.

PLUS- RED is a privately held company and is accountable to no shareholders. They do not publish their sales data because they do not have to. So your assumptions about sales are pure guesses.

Hi Ketch,

I believe the first statement to be true, it therefore follows that RED will catch up very quickly, probably in a few weeks, at that point RED will probably start shipping MX sensors in R1's @ $17,500 with a full years guarantee.

Well, the good news is, pretty much everything you said in your little rant there is completely wrong :)

Actually Red has stated it will not be charging 17,500 for MX red 1's. That is still an upgrade cost even when they catch up with the new ones.

I always beleived things were subject to change, I doubt they will be able to sell the 'old model' for full price for much longer. Remember Scarlet S35 MX for $7,000.

I would imagine they will discontinue R1 after the new Epics and Scarlets are established in the market. May not be economically feasible to sell them for less.
