  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IPP2 - Color shift problem for some time - help would be appreciated.

Michael,

Which IPP2 Output Transform Luts are you using? The ones from 09/08/2017 or the ones you will have to make on your own with new "Color Spaces", "Gamma Curves" and "Cube Sizes" which became available from Version 50.1 to Version 50.2 of Redcine-X Pro?

Also, make sure you have " Tetrahedral" selected instead of "Trilinear" for "3D Lookup Table Interpolation".It gives much better image quality.

I'd be more concerned about the monitor setup. How are they calibrated? If they're not calibrated and you're just using them out of the box as-is, they're not going to tell you the truth (and they very likely won't agree with each other, on top of that). Calman and Light Illusion are both highly-recommended tools for monitor calibration.

My joke about even high-end computer displays is, I can walk into an Apple store, see 5 iMac Pros on display (at $5000-$8000+), and even though every one of them is running the exact same demo, the color, brightness, contrast, and black levels are different on all of them.

I would compare the files using an operating system-independent program like VLC or Resolve or Premiere, and only use a color-managed output (like a Blackmagic or Aja adapter), feeding a calibrated display. Compare them on that and see how the files look.

You can also check them out on scopes and see how the waveforms or vectorscopes compare. Sometimes, there are very tiny issues that only show up in the waveform and are extremely subtle in the image itself.

Marc -

For my grading monitor - I use a Flanders Scientific that is calibrated every year (they do it free for life) - and is pretty close.

My actual gamma shift issue - I have no idea what is going on - but bringing home that Mac Pro - it isn't happening here. I seriously believe it has something to do with the Sonnet Echo breakbout Thunderbolt box I have to use - to install a blackmagic card - to use the SDI monitor on this Trash Can mac. Because - away from that - it is suddenly displaying no symptoms at all.

These shifts weren't about my color being different than what I thought by a small margin - but my screengrabs even in Red Cine were WAAAY off. Like insane.

Suddenly - normal. Same drive. Same clip. Normal. Just disconneted from that box.

In regards to the LUTS I am using for conversion - I have been using these in Resolve: https://www.red.com/downloads/58de98eff77f300ebe00053f

Looks like I should export one from Red CineX now - and then use that?

I had no idea. Ha. Maybe that will be the ticket!

I hope I can figure out what is causing this gamma shift - without being able to go to my SDI display - I will have to rely on my computer monitor.

Michael,

I had noticed that every Redcine-X Pro IPP2 beta version's output transform luts had given me a slightly different look. So just as a practice, I make new IPP2 Output transform Luts with every Significant Redcine-X Pro IPP2 update now that it is out of beta.

And Here's my Resolve / IPP2 workflow. It's not the "be all end all" workflow, but it's just the way "I" understand how the IPP2 workflow should work. There are most likely alternative workflows that you might like better.

Reading now. Thanks a bunch!

I've been in the field shooting so much - I haven't been able to keep up with all this.

Now post is upon me!

No Problem Michael. Here's two IPP2 refresher videos.

Guys - I found my problem - and need to know if anyone has ever dealt with this.

At my studio - when I brought the computer back - I had the SAME shift happen again.

Unplugging My blackmagic desktop video didn't do it - but - unplugging my BenQ HDMI 4K monitor did!!!! (which is my primary screen).

Using another monitor - via HDMI - it does NOT happen. And the R3ds export correct.

This has been effecting my exports from Resolve; Premiere Pro; and Red CineX - as the clips appear CORRECT in playback via SDI - and in the program's monitor window - but exports wrong!!!!!

How can a monitor do this????

Screengrabs below of the exported still VS the playback window in Red CineX (yes - it happens to all my quicktimes as well - window is correct - exports are NOT - ONLY when using this monitor) -

Using old Apple Monitor out the HDMI (converting DVI to HDMI) - https://lensdump.com/i/8R1h0Z
Using the new BenQ 4K (in which I installed NO software) - https://lensdump.com/i/8R1GfK

Okay - so - my co worker "fixed it".

Sort of.

While all our settings are correct here... both are SRGB - etc - the shift happens.

Simply swapping the displays in the System Preferences - before exporting - and BOOM. Everything suddenly matches.

For some reason - Mac is compensating for this monitor's gamma space - in a setting that is hidden - somewhere -- in the background - and we can NOT figure it out.

Now everything matches - and that is what I will do - until replacing this Trash Can Mac.

Thanks everyone. So so weird.

Best.
