Hey, everyone.

Question that has been a LONG time coming - because I keep thinking it's something I must be doing wrong.

I have a Macbook Pro that I use for on set DIT -- and a Dual D700 Mac Pro I use at work.

I'm a Red Epic W owner - and lots of times on location - I'll run a shot through resolve or Red Cine X Pro (I'm on IPP2) via the laptop. I get a gorgeous image from both Resolve and Red cine X...

But when I go to bounce the EXACT same settings on my studio's Mac Pro (my laptop just crashes in Red Cine - and Resolve is painfully slow) - I get less Dynamic Range - brighter images - and greener skin.

Monitors Settings are the same through my system preferences -- the only SRGB options I have on each (which is SRGB IEC61966-2.1)

I hate to sound so green - but WHAT have I been doing wrong?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Below are TIFF screen captures run through Red Cine X Pro - at 800 ISO - Medium Contrast and Medium Highlight Rolloff.

On the laptop - it looks so much better to my eyes. Dynamic range is also clearly more evident.

Thanks for your help. Sorry to sound like such a novice - but I've triple checked -- and I can't figure out what has been going on!

R3D Available.

Michael,

1) Could you check to see if you have the same "Color Space" and "Gamma" settings on both Redcine-X Pro and Davinci Resolve on both computers? Also , could you check to see if you are using the same "Output Tone Map" and "Highlight Roll-Off" Transform Lut on both programs and on both computers.

BTW,

"BT1886" equates to "Gamma 2.4"

2) Could you check to see if there may be a program on one or both of you computers that may override your systems "Color Space" and "Gamma Settings" (Usually a program that was installed your computer that allows you to change the settings of your Graphics card). It could also be a difference in the rendering of the two different graphic card of the two computers.

Thanks for everything --

But - ALL match between home and here - and already matched your settings.

Both computers have the same settings.

What's worse is - I notice in Resolve and Red Cine -- when I take a Tiff screenshot here - it is well brighter than the grade in the monitor when I open them side by side --

So something is Def wrong with my studio computer.

We just checked both applications against each other from your notes - and no differences.

The macbook - must be correct - as the graded images always match the display screen.

But I would love to verify. If you could - is there anyway in Red Cine 50 - you could open this R3d - and take a screenshot Tiff - and show me what it looks like in 800 ISO - Medium Contrast - Medium Highlight rolloff?

All default settings.

There must be some crazy gamma override somewhere?

I can't even trust my SDI monitor as it's on the computer that bounces bright. AHHH.

Thanks. That looks right - and matches pretty much my laptop.

That R3D I grabbed remotely - and he probably just wasn't in the sweet spot of the light waiting for action.

UGGGH. That is super bright here - at those same exact settings - and green.

And my SDI monitor is off as well - because the image in the project is much darker in the preview window(!) - so I am being also being fooled on my video out from Resolve.

I am getting this -- https://lensdump.com/i/81PHtT
And my Red CineX project matches yours - https://lensdump.com/i/81Pejr

UGGGH.

Understood Michael. Have you tried your SDI monitor's program settings for any irregularities?

I am reinstalling that now - with the latest verison.

I use a blackmagic breakout box.

Hopefully that helps. Missed that.

Thanks!

Installed - updated all my Blackmagic Drivers - then tried Red CineX.

Same washed out still export. UGGGH.

Running out of ideas...

I wonder if I should just back up this entire machine - reinstall OSX - and start again?

I've heard of issues though with the Dual D700 graphics cards. Hope this isn't one of them. Mine is within 2 years old though.

Michael,

How are you exporting stills and in what format?

Are you doing it with the "Snapshot" tool under the image viewer? And what Format?

Or

using the "Export" menu.

Also, if by the "Export" menu, is it "Full Graded IPP2 Mode' or "Primary Raw Development" and make sure the "Color Space" and "Gamma Curve" are the same as in "Preferences" under the "Image Pipeline".

Yep - Tiff on both.

Something is off with my entire system - what I see is not what exports.

UGGGH. TIFF; JPEG or Pro Res 4444.

Michael,

The only way I solve a Problem I had with a previous version of Redcine-X Pro was a complete re-install of a backed up copy of Windows. Hopefully it won't come to that for your system.

Michael,

Here is the last thing I could think of. Have you tried maybe switching between "Open CL" and "Cuda" in the "GPU Mode Selection" Pulldown menu to see if that may do something.

Guys - OK. Strangest thing.

I disconnected the Mac Pro - and brought it home - to reinstall mac osx tonight. In one last attempt; I imported the same shot again - and at home - boom. Tiff matches.

My resolve color exports aren't shifting when I just checked as well - and Premiere is working fabulously.

Perfect.

Screencap here of side by side: https://lensdump.com/i/81ciYe

So - if anyone has any expertise in what's going on - I'd love to know. LOL.

Must be something to do with the Blackmagic Card - that's in the sonnet echo external PCI slot? I need this to monitor out SDI in Resolve - etc - but Desktop video must be doing something I am totally unaware of.

Because - again - connected to my home dual monitors (one is HDMI and the other is DVI - just like at the office where I took it from) - no shift at all.

What is going on here??? AHHHH.

Thanks for everyone's input so far - looks like Blackmagic must be the culprit?

Anyone have any knowledge of a color shift on Trash Can macs - when running external pci video cards???

- Mike

Michael,

Great to see you got everything to work the way you wanted it to!

Question --

Using the same LUT in resolve - IPP2 - medium contrast/medium highlight rolloff --

Same white balance - and tint - and exposure...

Why do my images appear so much "thinner" and desaturated? VS Red Cine X? Is anyone else running into this (now that I can see what is going on)?

In order to match the same settings in Red CineX - on export - I had to swing the Kelvin about 100 less in temp - and then boost the saturation about 4%. Then it is DARN close to matching - as long as I export to quicktime using the "Full" option VS auto.

I have the 3d lut set to output monitor - which I was told was correct?

Just weird Red Cine X sees it differently?
