  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IPHONE 3g conspiracy

Tom,

Last I heard, tethering hasn't been enabled / allowed by AT&T yet. Seems that Apple and AT&T are in a dispute over the tethering feature. Apple thinks it should be a free ability since the phone has an unlimited data plan anyway. AT&T wants to charge another $5/month or something to enable it. ...At least that's the story I heard from two different sources.

Hmmm. The sales guy I talked to at AT&T a couple days ago claimed that I can buy a cable and spend an extra $30 a month to be able to tether my iPhone to my laptop. Maybe he was talking nonsense?

jeff- I've still got a year on my current contract since I was forced to renew my contract to a 2 year contract after upgrading to the 3g last year.

Mmost - I'm not 16 years old with my first phone/contract. And your MacPro discount doesn't hold water in analogy since they aren't offering discounts to anyone for a MacPro.
Just because they have an inconsistent policy doesn't mean I have to be happy about it or continue to support that kind of crap. If that works for you, great! I'll hold onto my 3g for now and switch when the time comes.

The only cable necessary is the one that comes with the iPhone (the iPhone to USB connector).

There's an article on how to enable tethering here.

I don't think you need any special cables

I think tethering will be enabled officially sometime in September when they enable MMS.

I personally don't have any need for tethering, but checked out how to do it. Yep, pretty easy. Or so it seems. Doesn't work with my old model iPhone so I can't test. Only 3G and later.

I'm guessing that tethering will be an official feature soon.

Well I could not find ANY retailers near me that had 3Gs phones, so I ended up ordering one over the phone from AT&T. They say it will take "7 to 14 days" to arrive. :(

i teather right now.. easy stuff

what carrier? at WWDC they said it was carrier dependent and that AT&T didn't support it until late summer

I've also heard that teathering has been available since gen1 via jailbraking, but I like to keep my phone legit

ive got ATT.. it works no problem.. have been doing it for over a year.

for a year? on what? original gen? 3g? jailbroken I would assume. please explain fully your steps :-)

I know they are still shipping them in from China, but damn that is a long wait. Mine only took 3 days to get here from China....
